SORRENTO VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) - Another San Diego-based company is moving forward on developing a vaccine for the coronavirus. Sorrento Therapeutics is working on several projects that they believe could lead to viable vaccines or treatments. One of them was announced on Monday. Sorrento Therapeutics said it was partnering with Boston-based Smartpharm to create a gene-encoded antibody vaccine. “In the effort to more quickly resolve the global COVID-19 crisis, our company has initiated a rapidly accelerated program for the identification of potent neutralizing antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus antigens that may be used for either treatment or prophylaxis,” said Henry Ji, CEO of Sorrento Therapeutics. Sorrento Therapeutics is also working on another vaccine called the I-Cell project. That vaccine uses a decoy virus to activate a person’s immune system to train it to attack the real virus. It’s also developing a protein called COVIDTRAP that can bind to the receptors on the coronavirus, thus blocking it from being able to bind to the receptors on healthy human cells. If proven succesful, it could be used as a treatment or preventative measure. How long will it take for them to be ready?“That all depends on what leeway the FDA gives us,” said Mark Brunswick, Senior Vice President of Regulatory Affairs at Sorrento Therapeutics. If they can get fast tracked, he estimates they can start clinical trials in 2 months, as opposed to 9-12 months normally. 1483

Seniors are among the fastest-growing population of new cannabis users. However, the stigma behind cannabis could be keeping some seniors from getting much-needed relief from chronic pain, as well as sleepless nights.Greg Saweikis is one senior finding relief through cannabis. Since he was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer in 2017, he’s undergone rounds of chemotherapy and radiation. But after a suggestion from a friend, Saweikis started taking cannabis, too.He takes CBD and THC pills by Stratos. He even uses a cannabis cream for his hands.  “It seems like it really has been helping,” Saweikis says. “I sleep a little bit better.”  But Saweikis knows not all people his age and older are open to using cannabis.  “I think there is a large stigma, still,” he says. “And it's just a holdover from the 60s and the whole, you know, from demonstrations and all of that kind of thing.”  Since the 1930s you've been told there's something really bad about cannabis that's always going to be there in the back of your head.  Leland Rucker is editor of Sensi, a magazine for adults with a cannabis emphasis. He says the stigma is still attached.  “And I talked to one woman who it really helped her start to sleep. She's all of a sudden sleeping much better, but she was embarrassed about,” Rucker recalls. “She was embarrassed to talk to people about it, because she had been so cannabis negative all of her life.”But Rucker says more older Americans are exploring, encouraged in part by their children and grandchildren.  “And so, you have to find out what the reality is,” Rucker says. “And I think that now that it's legal, we've given people that opportunity.”   1725

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — South Dakota, which has seen an uptick in coronavirus infections in recent weeks, is bracing to host hundreds of thousands of bikers for the 80th edition of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.More than 250,000 people are expected to attend the Aug. 7 to Aug. 16 rally in western South Dakota, which could make it the biggest event anywhere since the coronavirus pandemic started. The event will offer businesses that depend on the rally a chance to make up losses after the downturn in tourism spending.City Manager Daniel Ainslie told ABC News that sales tax revenue from the rally brought the community million last year and the event generated about 5 million across South Dakota. But many of Sturgis' roughly 7,000 residents are leery about the brimming bars and bacchanalia coming their way and say it shouldn't go on during a pandemic. The age of the average rally participant is also concerning to some, with most motorcyclists part of an older demographic and more at risk of severe illness from the coronavirus.ABC obtained a statement from the Centers from Disease Control and Prevention that said large gatherings make it difficult to maintain social distancing guidelines, which may put attendees at risk of exposure to the virus.“Any identification of cases following a large gathering would not likely be confirmed until 2-3 weeks after the event," the statement says. 1413

So you think ice cream is child's play? The state of New York just gave the OK for companies to produce frozen treats that are strictly for the 21 and over crowd.Monday, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a bill allowing the manufacture and sale of ice cream and other frozen desserts made with liquor in the state. The new legislation is designed to give dairy farmers, liquor and craft beverage producers cross the state a new market to explore."It might be nice for the adults, if they want to have a little bit of alcohol and kind of indulge while the kids are getting ice cream or candy or playing around in the fun atmosphere," said Adriana King, Assistant Manager of King Condrell's Candy and Ice Cream in Kenmore. 723

Something you may not think about discussing over your Thanksgiving meal on Thursday are the health conditions in your family.“I think it's particularly important this year in the COVID landscape ,because the last thing we want are additional conditions for a person to face if they're already at exposure for COVID,” said John Schall, CEO of the Caregiver Action Network.Thanksgiving is also National Family Health History Day.Schall says it's extremely common that people don't know the details of their family history when it comes to certain conditions. That could be everything from high blood pressure to heart issues. It's not an easy conversation to have, but the holiday, especially if it's happening over Zoom this year, can make the topic easier to bring up.“When you make it clear that it's really in everybody's best interest that we know what diseases that the aunts and uncles and grandparents and everybody faced is really to everybody's benefit, then maybe it's a little easier to have the conversation,” said Schall.Typically, Thanksgiving is also a time you can check in on family members you haven't see in person for several months. If those in-person visits aren't happening because of COVID-19, the Caregiver Action Network says you want to make sure you're asking questions over a video chat that you'd normally be able to observe in person. That includes things like making sure your family member doesn't have bills pilling up, or there aren't rugs or other hazards in their home that could cause them to fall. 1541
