NEW YORK (AP) — Macy’s said Thursday that it’s laying off 3,900 corporate staffers, roughly 3% of its overall workforce, as the pandemic takes a financial toll on the retailer's sales and profits.The headcount reduction will save the department store chain 0 million per year.Like many of its non-essential peers, Macy’s was forced to close its physical stores to curb the spread of the coronavirus, evaporating sales.Since early May, Macy’s has been gradually reopening its stores, which had been closed since March 18.The New York-based company furloughed a majority of its workers as the pandemic took hold in the U.S. However, it was announced Thursday that most remaining furloughed employees would be returning to work starting July 5.Macy’s CEO Jeff Gennette has said that customers are coming back, but it needs to cut costs to readjust its business to a new climate.“COVID-19 has significantly impacted our business. While the re-opening of our stores is going well, we do anticipate a gradual recovery of business, and we are taking action to align our cost base with our anticipated lower sales,” said Gennette. “These were hard decisions as they impact many of our colleagues. NEW YORK CITY — A shark washed up on Rockaway Beach in Queens on Monday afternoon, just days before the scheduled reopening of New York City beaches for swimming.The shark appears to have been injured after being caught up on a jetty, a Parks Department spokesperson said. The shark has since died.Parks staff removed the shark's body from the beach."We kindly ask New Yorkers to respect the space of any wild animal and appreciate them from a distance," the spokesperson said. "If you see a wild animal, report the sighting to the WildlifeNYC website."There are about 25 species of sharks in the waters off of New York, according to New York Aquarium Director Jon Dohlin. NEW YORK — Shake Shack employees have been cleared of any criminality after three police officers were sickened by drinks from a Lower Manhattan location Monday night, according to the NYPD."After a thorough investigation by the NYPD's Manhattan South investigators, it has been determined that there was no criminality by Shake Shack's employees," NYPD Chief of Detectives Rodney Harrison tweeted just after 4 a.m. Tuesday.According to police sources, it appeared a machine at the chain's Fulton Center location was improperly cleaned, resulting in the residue of a cleaning agent or bleach remaining inside when it was used to make beverages for the police officers.The investigation came after three Bronx officers, assigned to a protest detail in Lower Manhattan, became ill after drinking beverages from the restaurant.PBA President Pat Lynch said the police officers were hospitalized but were expected to be okay.The Detectives' Endowment Association initially claimed on Twitter Monday night that officers were "intentionally poisoned" by workers at the Shake Shack location, a claim the NYPD did not corroborate early Tuesday. 1143

NEW YORK (AP) — A federal judge in New York has ruled that Acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf assumed his position unlawfully. U.S. District Judge Nicholas Garaufis's ruling invalidates Wolf’s suspension of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which shields young people from deportation. Wolf effectively suspended the program in July, a month after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against President Donald Trump's efforts to end it. Garaufis wrote Saturday that DHS failed to follow an order of succession established when then-Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen resigned in April 2019.
