LINDA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Police arrested a man after an hours-long standoff in Linda Vista Wednesday night. It happened in an apartment at the end of Via Las Cumbres, near Kelly Street. Police say they were there to serve an arrest warrant on a man suspected of illegally possessing a loaded firearm. Officers on scene repeatedly asked the man to exit the apartment over a megaphone, but he remained inside. Around 9 p.m., officers used a battering ram to break down the front door. They brought out the man in handcuffs and placed him in a patrol vehicle. Lt. Danny Grubbs said they had tried to arrest the man several times before but he was able to get away. In one of those attempts, Grubbs said the man led CHP on a chase through Mission Valley but ended up crashing his van into the San Diego River. He escaped through a drainage ditch, evading capture. The man’s identity was not released. 908

LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) - A new study says selling your home and renting a smaller place is becoming more appealing for retirees hoping to make it in San Diego. After working for nearly three decades at a phone company, Lydia Tillinghast retired."I was excited, excited for the new adventure," said Tillinghast, 69.Years into her retirement, her husband passed. Her stress level climbed, along with the expenses of her three-bedroom home in Ocean Beach."Overwhelmed. I was overwhelmed," said Tillinghast.RELATED: Making It in San Diego: Cost of housing driving up retirement spending in CaliforniaShe wanted to stay in the area, but like many, her retirement accounts aren't vast. So last year, she and her Corgi, Luke, embarked on their retirement dreams by selling her dream home of 42 years, moving into the Waterford Terrace retirement community in La Mesa and paying rent for a one-bedroom apartment home."The numbers made sense ... was emotionally attached to the house, but ready for a change," said Tillinghast. She's not alone in her thinking. According to a new study from Moneyrates.com, the San Diego area ranks 20th best in the country when it comes to seniors 'downsizing,' defined as selling their home to rent in a smaller place. According to the study, selling a median priced home will net you 32.67 years of rent in a two-bedroom apartment. That's despite sky-high rents. "That's because as much as rents have gone up, housing values have gone up even more," said Richard Barrington, senior financial analyst at Moneyrates.com.RELATED: Here's where you can get a senior discount around San DiegoToss in the expenses a homeowner won't be paying - like property taxes, home insurance and upkeep - and the numbers add up for retirees like Tillinghast. Her all-inclusive rent at Waterford Terrace includes meals, am on-site beauty salon, a movie theater and a full slate of activities. Her finances should allow her to stay here as long as she wants."As long as I don't go crazy and go around the world, it'll be quite a while. Until I die, I suppose ... I am living my retirement dream."Juan Sotelo, Executive Director of Waterford Terrace Retirement Community, says most of the some 100 residents sold homes before coming to live there. 2258

LINDA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Survivors of violent sexual predators gathered today to protest the release of convicted sex offender Alan Earl James. They put up posters in the restaurant where they held the rally which said, “We don’t want a rape whistle, we want change” and “You care more about the rapist than you do the victim.”James was convicted of felony sex crimes on minors in 1981 and 1986 and sentenced to 28 years in state prison. A judge has recommended his release, but his survivor Robert Nabors says he should stay behind bars. Nabors said, “He will re-offend if he gets out. He did it once before. They gave him a slap on the wrist for raping me, and when he got out, he raped two other girls.”His placement hearing is tomorrow. If he’s released, he’ll be placed in Jacumba Hot Springs community. The people there protest his arrival. 858

LAS VEGAS — Four contestants of the Mrs. America Pageant 2018 have accused the pageant's executive director of racial bias during conversations he had with them at the event in August. The contestants made the claims while speaking to media with their attorney, Gloria Alred, in New York today. The pageant took place in August 2018 in Las Vegas.Alred said some black participants allege that they were subjected to racially insensitive comments. They were made by the executive director and co-founder of the pageant, David Marmel. He "subjected them to listening to racial stereotypes about African-American Women and African-American men," Alred said.A white participant overheard the conversation, she said. The people who heard the comments shared that information with their families after it occurred. The contestants have come out with the information now to ensure pageant participants in the future will not endure the alleged racial bias. The women do not plan to file a claim or lawsuit, they simply want the pageant to be a place where everyone is respected and feels safe, Alred said.Marmel, who is white, has been accused of using the "n" word when referencing blacks, and telling the contestants that black women should stop having babies with multiple men, and called them "baby daddies."He also told the contestants they should be thankful for what he has done for the black community and saying the most racist people he's ever known are the leaders of "Ebony" and "Jet" magazines, according to the women who spoke at today's news conference. The contestants said they stayed quiet at the time for fear of being removed from the pageant. They said Marmel accused them of lying and denied making the comments.Marmel has not issued a statement regarding today's allegations. 1810

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The owner of a pharmacy that provided drugs to Nebraska for use in a 2018 execution is expressing remorse for making the sale, but acknowledging that he knew that prison officials wanted them for a lethal injection.Public records released late Thursday show that Community Pharmacy Services, a pharmacy in Gretna, Nebraska, agreed to sell the drugs to the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services for two payments totaling ,500.State officials had refused to identify their supplier until the Nebraska Supreme Court ruled in May that they cannot withhold that information.Pharmacy owner Kyle Janssen says the drugs supplied to the Nebraska Department of Corrections were used in the August 2018 execution of Carey Dean Moore, the first death by lethal injection in the state. Moore was convicted of murdering two cab drivers in Omaha. In a statement obtained by The Associated Press, Janssen said his pharmacy has not supplied drugs to any department of corrections since the sale and will never again.“I regretted the decision as it does not align with our company’s values to provide the best patient care and customer service to the long-term care industry,” said Janssen. 1210
