The Boston area is home to some of the most elite schools in America. People from around the world dream of enrolling at schools like Harvard, MIT, Tufts and others. But for many of those living just about a half hour from Harvard's campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the idea of going to any college can be hard to imagine. "I never really even thought about college or even finishing high school," Paul Burns says.Burns grew up in a tough part of Boston's Dorchester neighborhood. "It's an everyday struggle to even survive," he says. "Everyone doesn't go to school. Everyone doesn't go to college. Everyone doesn't have job. Everyone doesn't have the benefits that most kids have."Burns wasn't going to college at 17; he was going to prison. He spent five years behind bars. When he got out, he walked into the non-profit, College Bound Dorchester. "The first Friday I got out, I was in there the next Monday," Burns recalls.College Bound Dorchester helps people who others might think would never have a chance at college."They're not different from you or me; they have dreams,” College Bound Dorchester's senior vice president Michelle Caldeira says. “They just need the opportunity." College Bound Dorchester tutors, guides and helps students, many of whom are former gang members."The rate of people who were formally incarcerated going back to jail is 40 percent in Massachusetts," Caldeira says. "For us, it's lower. It's about 19 percent, so we know immediately when students are engaged with us the recidivism is immediately lowered."According to the 1576

The growing popularity of online ordering is giving rise to virtual restaurants, conceived only for delivery or take out. Many restaurant owners are whipping up dishes in their own kitchens that can only be accessed through third-party delivery apps like Grubhub and UberEats. Other restaurants are expanding their footprint with "ghost kitchens," where food is prepared for online orders only. The trend seeks to capitalize on the .8 billion online ordering market, the fastest-growing source of restaurant sales in the U.S., according to the NDP group. It also speaks to the power of third-party delivery apps, which have transformed expectations for speed and convenience. In many cases, those same platforms are extending their influence from how people get their food to what should go on the menu. 816

The man behind the American pastime of paint-by-numbers pictures died on April 1 at the age of 93, according to his son. Dan Robbins created the first pictures and helped popularize paint-by-numbers kits in the 1950s.Robbins' son, Larry, said his dad was working as a package designer for the Palmer Paint Company in Detroit when he came up with the idea for paint-by-numbers in the late 1940s. He worked there as a graphic artist and sold children's paint that was washable. The idea for paint-by-numbers started when Robbins' boss asked him to come up with an item that could be geared towards adults. Robbins got inspiration for the product from Leonardo da Vinci. The famous artist would hand out numbered designs to apprentices. Robbins took that concept and evolved it into paint-by-numbers.Robbins' work had a significant impact on the pop culture of the 1950s and '60s, since post-World War II Americans found themselves with leisure time to pursue hobbies and activities such as painting."Dad was a very, very modest person. He would never bring up his career. If someone asked him, he'd explain," Larry Robbins said. "Dad was into the accomplishment of providing ... for people like me who can't draw a stick man, to be able to paint and the experiencing of creating a nice piece of art work."Before computers were involved, the artists creating the pictures had to paint the image and then use a piece of acetate or clear plastic over the original to create the areas for each number. Beginner kits started with 20 colors and the number of colors increased with the level of difficulty.Robbins' son said that his father didn't get rich from his invention. Dan Robbins didn't own the company, and eventually his product's parent company, Craft Master, was bought by General Mills.Robbins ended up in the Chicago area and did his own consulting work. He did art work, packaging, and new product development until he retired in the 1980s, according to his son.His work is still on display in the Detroit Historical Museum, along with works from the likes of Henry Ford.Dan Robbins died in Toledo, Ohio, after contracting pneumonia following a series of falls, according to his son. He is survived by his wife, two sons, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. 2289

The Erie County Sheriff's Office in Ohio have arrested a man accused of escaping a police cruiser after allegedly having sex in a hot tub. According to a police report, deputies responded to Kalahari Resorts around 8:15 p.m. Tuesday after a lifeguard reportedly caught a man and woman allegedly having intercourse in a hot tub.Security told deputies Kamden Mack, 25, became "irate" after being confronted by the lifeguard. Mack told deputies he did not know why security was evicting him, then swore at security officers, according to a report. Mack and the woman, Taylor Coats, 22, denied the accusations. Mack and Coats were told by deputies to gather their belongings and leave the property, according to the report. Sheriff's deputies left the pair with security and were getting to ready leave when they were informed that Mack and Coats tried running from security officers. Security officers captured Mack and held him on the ground when deputies arrived, according to the report. Deputies had to pull Mack into the back of a cruiser after he allegedly refused to go inside. After Mack was in the cruiser, one deputy attempted to locate Coats, while the other stayed with Mack. At this time, Mack was able to open the passenger door and started running toward the convention center, according to the report. Deputies eventually caught up to Mack and tackled him to the ground. He was then placed inside of a patrol vehicle with a working safety lock. Deputies arrested Coats after security found her in her hotel room. Mack was charged with felony escape, misdemeanor persistent disorderly conduct and criminal trespassing. Coats was charged with misdemeanor persistent disorderly conduct and criminal trespassing. 1734
