CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A 16-year-old who reportedly made a social media threat against Bonita Vista High School was arrested Tuesday, police say. According to police, officials discovered that the juvenile was responsible for the second of two threats against the school. "The juvenile told police that he had seen the first threat online and decided to 'join-in' to further scare people. He said he thought it would be funny," police said. The teenager was arrested for making criminal threats and is expected to be released to his parents. I like some of you. Chopped romaine lettuce grown in the Yuma, Arizona, area is to blame for a multistate E. coli outbreak, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday."At this time, no common grower, supplier, distributor, or brand has been identified," the CDC said.So far 35 cases of E. coli illness in 11 states have been reported and linked to the outbreak. The earliest symptoms began on March 22. Twenty-two of the ill individuals have been hospitalized. Three of those patients developed a type of kidney failure associated with an E. coli illness called hemolytic uremic syndrome, which can be life-threatening.Symptoms of E. coli typically begin two to eight days after consuming the bacteria, although most patients become ill three or four days after consumption. Symptoms include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting. Most people recover in five to seven days. Those most at risk for E. coli illness include the very young, the very old and individuals with compromised immune systems.Health officials warned the public to stay away from chopped romaine lettuce. "Consumers anywhere in the United States who have store-bought chopped romaine lettuce at home, including salads and salad mixes containing chopped romaine lettuce, should not eat it and should throw it away, even if some of it was eaten and no one has gotten sick. If you do not know if the lettuce is romaine, do not eat it and throw it away," the CDC said.Restaurants and stores are advised not to serve or sell chopped romaine lettuce.In addition, the agency recommends asking grocery stores and restaurants to confirm their chopped romaine is not from Yuma.The advice is based on interviews with 28 of the ill individuals in which 93% of them reported consuming romaine lettuce within the week they began feeling sick."Most people reported eating a salad at a restaurant, and romaine lettuce was the only common ingredient identified among the salads eaten. (KGTV) — Chula Vista's sprawling University and Innovation District site was presented to California State University consultants this week as a possible location for a future campus.Eric Crockett, Chula Vista's economic development director, says consultants provided city, business, and education leaders with "a lot of feedback" during discussions about the region's possibilities."Everybody was very supportive, everyone knows there’s a need for higher education," Crockett said. "South Bay has a need for higher education."Chula Vista Mayor Mary Casillas Salas added that the meeting showed "pretty significant movement" for the city's planned University and Innovation District, which includes more than 500 acres of availability for a campus."I think is the best argument in our favor is that we're in a bi-national region and that this is a huge economic driver in the State of California," Salas said. "It’s almost the same for-profit model."City officials have already envisioned the district would include a commercial and residential component. Chula Vista laid all of those qualities on the table."We’re trying not to create a drain on the state or take money from other universities," Crockett said. "When we did our planning document, it also contains for-profit uses."In addition to Chula Vista's land availability, the area is home to Southwestern College and situated near several other community colleges, including San Diego City College, San Diego Mesa College, Cuyamaca College, and Grossmont College.Salas added that the city has continued talks with San Marcos-based Saint Katherine College for 10-acres of the site. Salas said that university could potentially start off the site's development and work alongside the CSU development, adding more appeal for CSU.Consultants will continue to meet with leaders from each community to learn how a potential campus could best serve the state's higher education needs. Those meetings will consider the area's relationship with community colleges, benefit to the region, land availability, and potential enrollment.Consultants developing the feasibility study are working on behalf of CSU to keep the process objective, Uhlenkamp says. CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A man was arrested today on suspicion of trying to open a bank vault where some employees had locked themselves in to hide from the suspect, police said.Police received two calls from an employee of Wells Fargo Bank in the 1200 block of Broadway at 9:36 a.m. Saturday, according to Lt. Scott Adkins of the Chula Vista Police Department. The first call was about a man causing a disturbance outside the bank, and the second call was to report an attempted robbery by the same man inside the bank.Police arrived at the bank and arrested Elieser Hurta, 27, who was trying to open the bank's vault with a set of keys stolen from an employee, Adkins said.Hurta was unarmed and no employees were injured in the attempted robbery, the lieutenant said. One bank employee fainted during the incident, and some employees were found hiding inside the vault, he said.Hurta was arrested on suspicion of two counts of robbery in the theft of personal items from two bank employees, and one count of attempted robbery for trying to open the bank's vault, Adkins said. 1080
