INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana — A new tool is emerging to battle the scour of overdose deaths that lead directly to the powerful synthetic drug, fentanyl.Drug users can now test to see whether the drug they are about to inject is in fact fentanyl.Lena Severance, 35, was battling a heroin addiction. She told her mother she could tell, if the illicit drugs she was taking, was fentanyl — by it's color. She was wrong.Dead wrong. That was April 28, 2018. Her death certificate provided the evidence that five different types of fentanyl was laced into the heroin she used.Lena's mother, Sherry McKay welcomes the availability of fentanyl test strips for users."If they can test it and see if that is in there or not, yeah, its gonna help. It's gonna give them the choice," McKay said. "Do I want to do this, and take the chance of dying? Or do I want to live and not do it?""It could save a lot of lives," she said. You can obtain Fentanyl strips through the Overdose Lifeline.A program that Justin Phillips founded in 2014, after her 20-year-old son Aaron, died from an opioid overdose."Individuals who do test their drugs are less likely to use the drugs. Or at the minimum, use less at that time would be considered harm reduction, at the least," said Phillips. "And don't use the same amount if you are gonna go ahead and use."A report from the Journal of the American Medical Association found that fentanyl was involved in nearly half of the opioid related deaths. The enormity of the problem drew this reaction from IUPUI professor Dr. Brad Ray who does research on substance abuse."The number one thing we need to focus on is medication assisted treatment" said Dr. Ray. "The number two thing is the distribution of nalaxone, and the number three thing is these drug testing devices."If you are interested in obtaining fentanyl testing strips, you can call Overdose Lifeline: 844-554-3354.The strips are free of charge. 1928
Josh Snider hoped the government shutdown would mean fewer crowds at Big Bend National Park during his Christmas Eve hike, even if it meant no visitor services or staff patrolling the Texas countryside. Then, he fell and broke his leg about 1.5 miles into the trek. Suddenly, he needed help -- and people.Fortunately, although rescue services were limited due to the shutdown, other people were close by, he said. A family of four, another hiker and a park ranger carried Snider out of Santa Elena Canyon to safety."It turned out to be one of the most beautiful moments ever," Snider said. "It was great to see everyone come together to help get me out of the canyon."Unlike some previous government shutdowns, in which national parks closed entirely, gates have remained opened under the Trump administration, though parks are severely understaffed. CNN has reached out to Big Bend for comment on this incident.Big Bend, which covers 1,252 square miles in southwest Texas, including the Chisos Mountains and a large swath of the Chihuahuan Desert, is 1063

INDIANAPOLIS — If you receive an email offering to help check your gift card balances, do not click on it, the Better Business Bureau says. Scammers are using websites to get your card number, pin number and drain your account. The BBB says you may also stumble upon one of the websites by searching online. They've offered the following tips to avoid gift card balance scams:Go to the retailer's website: If you need to check a gift card balance, go to the site listed on the back of the card itself. If there is none, go to the website of the company and look for a link to the gift card page.Use gift cards right away: A good way to avoid scams and other issues is to simply use gift cards soon after you receive them.Examine the gift card before buying: Before purchasing a gift card, be sure to give it a thorough look to make sure the PIN isn't exposed or the packaging hasn't been tampered with.Register your gift card with the retailer: If the retailer allows the option to register your gift card, take full advantage. Registering your gift card makes it easier to keep track of any misuse occurring, that way you can report it sooner and potentially end up saving the money that is stored. 1213
