MURRIETA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The contractor involved in Monday’s deadly gas explosion in Murrieta did not call 811 as required by law, according to officials. One SoCalGas worker was killed in the explosion and more than a dozen people were injured. If a homeowner or contractor plans to do any digging into the ground, there must be a call placed to 811 two working days in advance, according to state law. Investigators say a solar company was working on the Murrieta home when the explosion occurred. That company, Horizon Solar Power, would not specifically address the incident. A spokesperson told Team 10: “Yesterday, four members of our team were at the site of a residential explosion in Murrieta. We are working with authorities and collecting facts to better understand what happened. Our primary thoughts are with the people who were injured and their families, including with the family of the person who lost his life.”An SDG&E spokesperson said 811 must be called for projects including landscaping, fence, and patio projects. In San Diego County when you place that call, SDG&E will mark the location of buried utility owned pipelines and other lines. Most new moms can relate; after being stuck inside with a newborn for several weeks, getting outside for fresh air and a different view is important.Mei Xiang at the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington, D.C. took her newborn panda cub outside the den recently and into the main enclosure.It was a short field trip for the pandas, with Mei Xiang gently nudging her cub along the floor and keeping them out of the smaller den space.These field trips will get longer and more frequent as the cub gains more strength.At eight-weeks-old, the cub is practicing crawling and is not expected to take steps until closer to three-months-old.Zookeepers say the cub is packing on the pounds and has grown a coat of thick, wooly fur, able to help it regulate its body temperature. (KGTV) - Some unexpected joy is arriving in the mail for residents of local senior care facilities, amid the ongoing restrictions on visitors.When the coronavirus pandemic forced visitor restrictions on nursing homes, Terri Martinson was conflicted. Her father is a resident at Parkview at Paradise Village in National City. She was happy the health of her father - Clyde Hasemeyer - was being protected, but she knows her dad."My dad is very social. He loves getting visitors, and telling jokes, playing games, singing and laughing. I was really concerned he wouldn't have any visitors," said Martinson.She and her family call often and write letters, but a few days ago, Clyde got a letter from someone he doesn't know. Clyde, a Koren War Marine Veteran, received a letter from 14-year-old Christian Hughes.10news caught up with Christian and his mother Mariana a few days ago as they began a letter-writing campaign for local senior care facilities. Their idea caught fire on social media. Hundreds of letters and cards have started to arrive at nursing homes, ending up in the hands and hearts of people like Clyde."My dad was so happy. He laughed and enjoyed it so much. He asked the caregiver to tape them up on his wall, so he could look at them all the time. Just makes him feel so nice not to be so isolated away from everyone," said Martinson.It's a feeling of not being alone during a time of staying apart.
