SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A state review board will decide Tuesday whether to grant parole to a former skateboarding star from Carlsbad who has spent nearly three decades behind bars for a brutal rape and murder.Mark “Gator” Rogowski was a world champion skateboarder in the 1980’s who drew comparisons to Tony Hawk. He parlayed his fame into endorsements and promotional videos until he entered a guilty plea to the 1991 rape and murder of Jessica Bergsten, whose body was found buried in the desert.“This was a horrific, heinous, monstrous crime by an individual who really doesn’t want to admit that he took out transferred rage on another innocent individual,” said Deputy District Attorney Richard Sachs, who will represent the state at Tuesday’s hearing.Rogowski was denied parole in 2011 and 2016, but his case was granted another review ahead of schedule, Sachs said. The parole board will determine if Rogowski remains a threat to the community based on a psychological assessment and other factors.In a promotional video by the prison rehabilitation non-profit Getting Out by Going In (GOGI), Rogowski said he’s taken accountability for the crime and found a higher power.“My identity as a man was skewed. I thought what it meant to be a man was to be a womanizer, to have a lot of relationships,” he said.In 1991, the former skateboarding celebrity invited Bergsten to his Carlsbad apartment. Bergsten was a friend of the girl who had just dumped Rogowski.In a fit of what he called “misplaced revenge,” Rogowski clubbed the young woman over the head, cut her clothes off with scissors and sexually assaulted her for hours. When she screamed for help, Rogowski covered her with a surfboard bag and strangled her through it. He then drove two hours into the desert and buried her naked body in a shallow grave.“Certain crimes are so horrible they shock the conscience and this is one of them,” Sachs said.Sachs said prosecutors will strongly oppose parole on public safety grounds, although he acknowledged he could not predict the board's decision. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Southern California athlete said his life was changed forever from a stem cell product he said came from a San Diego company. “It’s been tough. And it’s still tough,” said Alex Reyes. Team 10 interviewed Reyes at a San Bernardino park, where he took a few moments to play with his young children. Those are the moments he treasures because last year, even holding his kids was something he could not do. “I couldn’t walk for about three and a half to four weeks. I was on a bedpan. It was one of the hardest things I had to go through in my life,” Reyes said.This is coming from a man used to taking punches. He has several accomplishments in mixed martial arts, including King of the Cage Junior Welterweight and Lightweight Champion, as well as the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation Absolute Purple Belt Champion. Reyes was signed to the UFC back in September of 2017 to compete in the Lightweight Division. In the UFC, he was known as the Executioner. “It was just the beginning for me,” Reyes said.He started doing stem cell injections last year to help with an old back injury. “It was kind of nagging,” he told Team 10.The first one he tried went well. “It helps regenerate the tissue… there was improvement, and I felt better,” he said. The second time, Reyes said he went to a different clinic in Las Vegas in June 2018. According to his lawsuit, the product used was from the ReGen Series?, developed and manufactured by Genetech. Genetech is not related to the biotechnology company Genentech.“After I got the injection a few days later, I couldn’t walk anymore, I couldn’t stand I couldn’t sit, I couldn’t move. It was really bad,” Reyes said. The lawsuit states patients from all over the country used the Genetech stem cell products from the ReGen Series?, but there were problems. The court documents show Health Departments in Texas and Florida received notification of bacteria in patients who received those injections. Genetech, which used to operate at a building on Bunker Hill Street on the edge of Pacific Beach, is now closed. However, federal regulators are currently looking into the company’s operations. A letter issued late last year by the Federal Drug Administration warned Genetech about several violations with “potential serious risks to patients.” The FDA and Centers for Disease Control are aware of at least 12 patients who received Genetech products. Is he dying? SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Airbnb is warning would-be party-goers this Halloween that weekend parties at San Diego listings are banned and guests could face legal action if they violate the policy.The rental booking platform banned parties at all of its listings in August and capped occupancy at 16 people as a precaution due to the pandemic. Airbnb has also banned one-night reservations over the Halloween weekend across the country."The great majority of guests are respectful of our hosts’ homes and neighbors, and we understand that this initiative will disrupt many one-night reservations that might not have led to parties. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An Oceanside woman says she was left feeling violated after her car was stolen from the Porto Vista Hotel's valet in Little Italy. "I had to leave some of my things in my car, like my work computer, some of my personal items that were expensive and personal, but I trusted they would be ok because it was a valet service at the hotel," said Ashley Holthaus, whose car was stolen. Her friend had a room at the hotel, and their group of friends went to a concert at San Diego State that evening. "The next morning, around 6:30 a.m. I got up and walked over to the valet and gave him my ticket and at that point, he looked for my keys and couldn't find my keys or record of my car being at the hotel."Holthaus says the next few hours were extremely stressful as staff tried to figure out what happened. She says she was asked to wait to call police until they had a better idea of what happened.Holthaus was eventually shown surveillance footage. She describes seeing a tall man in a hoodie walk up to the unattended valet kiosk, take her keys, walk straight to her car, and drive out of the parking garage. "Why am I paying for a service and then have something like this happen and then there's no accountability from the hotel?" said Holthaus.Her company's IT department was able to track the computer which was in the car; she says it was located out of the country.Holthaus says to make matters worse, the hotel charged her for the valet and did not offer to compensate her friend for the room.An attorney for the hotel tells 10News there hasn't been an incident like this in Porto Vista's 30 years of operation. The attorney says they've turned over surveillance to police and are cooperating with the investigation. He added that management is taking measure to ensure this doesn't happen again. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An 87-year-old man was beaten during a home invasion in Clairemont Wednesday afternoon. According to San Diego Police, the incident happened on the 4600 block of Firestone Street at 3:02 p.m. Police say three men forced their way into the 87-year-old man’s home before beating and robbing him. "All of a sudden three guys come plowing through my front door, said 'this is a robbery.' I said, 'Come on ... I got nothing here for you.' Which didn’t dissuade them," said Paul Schmidt. Schmidt told 10News he was working on a ceiling fan with the door open when the men broke in. “I had scissors laying there, he grabbed the scissors and he threatened me with it. He said, 'There’s three of us and one of you, and we’re robbing you.' And what could I do, maybe one or two guys I can handle, but three ..." Schmidt added. Schmidt says he fought back, grabbing one of the robber's beards before one of the men held scissors to his throat. "The guy with the beard, he was the meanest, he seemed to be the lead, but he was higher than a kite," Schmidt said. The robbers were able to get away with Schmidt's wallet as well as his red pickup truck and some smaller items. Police arrested two suspects in the attack on July 25. Both suspects have, as of Monday, been charged with robbery, elder abuse and auto theft.The suspects were identified as John Slobig, 59 and Terry Jones, 53. Police say a third suspect is still outstanding and the victim’s vehicle was returned. 1489
