Deterring kids from the streets is a challenge many communities around the country are dealing with, but Howard Cato has a very specific plan to do just that. Cato started a summer camp, where he takes kids to a BMX bike track, teaching them the basics of the sport.“BMX, bicycle motocross,” he explains. “What I do is, we race bikes.”For Cato, BMX was all about the thrill.“Oh man, it’s the adrenaline,” he says, grinning.But looking back on the hobby he picked up in his childhood, he realizes now that it was more than that; BMX gave him a hobby that kept him off the streets—that is until his father died.“I stopped racing BMX. I found the streets, going out there on the streets, man, and leaving my bikes,” he says. “And I ended up getting shot several times and paralyzed.”Eventually he found his way back. These days, he’s making sure kids in his hometown of Oakland have a chance to learn the skill that set him on the right track.Cato started the program Flood the Streets with Bikes, which aims to provide bikes to kids who don’t have them. DENVER – No, that's not snow in the image you see above.As much as four inches of hail was reported along Interstate 70 in the Floyd Hill area west of Denver on Friday afternoon, according to the Colorado State Patrol. The storms were moving into the metro area and were expected to bring rain, more hail, lightning and strong winds through the rest of the afternoon and into the evening.The strongest portion of the storm appeared to be heading east through the southern side of the metro, toward Ken Caryl, Littleton and Centennial. A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for that area, including Greenwood Village, Highlands Ranch and Lone Tree until 4 p.m. The hail had stopped falling in the Floyd Hill area by 3 p.m., according to CSP, and Colorado Department of Transportation crews were clearing the area with plows. Days before a gun rights protest that is set to take place this weekend at the Virginia Capitol, Gov. Ralph Northam declared an emergency, which will ban protesters from entering the grounds around the Capitol with firearms. The emergency, which was declared by executive order, will span Friday, January 17 at 5:00 p.m. until Tuesday, January 21 at 5:00 p.m.“Law enforcement intelligence analysts have identified credible threats of violence surrounding the event, along with white nationalist rhetoric and plans by out-of-state militia groups to attend,” said a statement from Northam’s office. Northam tweeted that the order was to protect citizens and lawmakers. “We support citizens’ rights to peacefully protest and express their views to their elected officials. But we must also keep the public, as well as those who work around Capitol Square, safe,” the governor tweeted.Northam, a Democrat elected in 2018, now enjoys partisan support from the Virginia House and Senate. Following the 2019 election, Democrats have the majority in the Virginia House of Delegates for the first time in more than two decades. With Democrats holding the bicameral legislature, there has been a push to enact gun control.
