SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A family escaped from a fire that erupted in the garage of their Bay Ho home late Sunday night, but the family’s pet cat did not survive.At around 11:15 p.m., San Diego Fire-Rescue crews were called to a home in the 4800 block of Hidalgo Avenue in response to a fire at a two-story home.Firefighters knocked down the flames and kept the fire contained to the garage, but there was smoke damage throughout the home, SDFD spokesperson Monica Munoz said. A time of knockdown was not available.The family of five made it out of the home safely, but ABC 10News learned the family’s cat was overcome by smoke and later passed away.The American Red Cross was called to help the displaced residents arrange for temporary lodging. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A first of it's kind scholarship is up for the taking for female high school seniors pursuing a college sports career.Solana Beach athletics wear company, HYLETE, calls it their "GRACEDBYGRIT" scholarship."We all experience these gritty moments in our lives and those gritty moments are what define us, they give us our strength and it's what you do with those gritty moments that gives you your grace," Vice President of HYLETE Kate Nowlan said.Nowlan played Softball and swam in high school. She said sports have a huge impact on young women, "they have a greater chance of success professionally but also their self confidence is higher."A 2014 Ernst & Young and espnW study found 52% of female executives played sports in college. "This is one small way we can contribute to someone's success," Nowlan said, referring to the ,000 scholarship they're awarding for the first time.High school seniors must have a minimum 3.0 GPA, be pursuing college sports and have a story of overcoming adversity. The applicant must write an essay and complete a short video describing that trying moment and how it taught her grace.Nowlan said her grit came when she was 20-years-old and became Maggi's mother, "she was often in my front pack while I finished my degree which was definitely a graceful way of doing it, but a really hard time in my life." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A driver says she lost control of her Honda Civic and slammed into a home in Encanto early Tuesday morning.The incident happened at around 2:45 a.m. on Otay Street, according to San Diego police.Despite the trail of destruction left behind, no one was injured.The homeowner said he heard the crash and had no idea what happened until he saw the destruction to his kitchen, with appliances pushed across the floor.Police are investigating the incident. 478

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As police ramp up their probe, an Otay Mesa dog owner believes his dog may also have been targeted by a pepper spray-wielding mail carrier.The owner of 9-year-old Roscoe didn't want identified, but he tells 10news about two months ago - moments after their mail carrier left - Roscoe started to twitch in pain, which lasted minutes. He say Roscoe was behind a gate and not a threat to the postal carrier. Hours later, the dog's eyes were still red. The dog's owner didn't report it, but says another neighbor complained about a similar occurrence. Both of their homes are just blocks from the Galindo home on Agosto Street."Makes me feel angry and so sad that he's causing so much pain," said Alfonso Galindo.Earlier this week, he spoke to 10news about the strange stains on his patio that prompted him to check his surveillance video. He watched the unbelievable unfold: a postal carrier appearing to hold pepper spray under the mail, as he walked by a metal gate. Behind the gate is his 7-year-old rescue Pupa. At the same time, Pupa begins convulsing for minutes."Sickening. It's scary how nonchalant he is. He's done this before," said Galindo.Galindo says he found nine similar incidents in the recordings on his hard drive, about a month's worth. The Postal Service issued an apology, saying the 'appropriate action' will be taken."That left me with a question. Is this person going to be retrained and put back on my route? That's not going to cut it," said Galindo.There are also more questions about the impact on his two young children, who are constantly touching and hugging Pupa.
