DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) - Renting or owning a home in Del Mar is way out of reach for most San Diego families. But unlike other coastal cities, Del Mar has zero affordable apartments. Instead, Del Mar subsidizes rent for six low-income families. On Monday, the county's smallest city could get on the way to offering affordable homes. The Del Mar City Council could move to take advantage of a new state law that streamlines permitting for accessory dwelling units, like a granny flat in the backyard or a separate apartment within a house. The city may ask families who build those units to commit to leasing them to low-income families for thirty years. In exchange, the homeowners would get an additional 500 square feet of space above current zoning when they want to add on to their properties. “There is nothing that brings me to life or makes me feel more at home than being near the coast, and I think it's a blessing and wonderful opportunity,” said Kari Arendsen, who was visiting Dog Beach.  The city is hoping to start the program with two homeowners, but ultimately aims to get 22 affordable homes on line. The affordable homes would be for families earning at least 80 percent of the median income, so a family of two earning about ,200 a year would qualify. DENVER -- A Colorado man’s vacation in Hawaii took a terrible turn this week when he was attacked by a shark.Dylan McWilliams, 20, was bitten by a tiger shark while surfing in Hawaii.McWilliams received stitches and will be okay, but he could be named the most unluckiest – or luckiest –guy in Colorado.“Yeah, this isn’t my first time being bitten,” McWilliams told Denver7 over a FaceTime call. “Last summer I was attacked by a bear in Boulder. It dragged me out of my tent by my head.”Scripps Denver affiliate KMGH-TV spoke with McWilliams last summer following the attack. He received several scars on his head but ended up okay.“I fought off the bear as much as I could until it dropped me and let me go,” McWilliams said.Less than a year later, and McWilliams gets bitten by a Tiger Shark in Hawaii.“I felt something hit my leg, and I looked down and there was a lot of blood and I saw the shark underneath me,” McWilliams said. “I started swimming as fast as I could to shore.”McWilliams said the shark looked to be between six and eight feet long.But the bear and shark attacks haven't been the only two times he's had a dangerous encounter with wildlife.“When I was sixteen, I was in Utah and I was walking outside and thought I kicked a cactus and it ended up being a rattlesnake,” McWilliams said. “It bit me too.”Denver7 reporter Tomas Hoppough jokingly told McWilliams through the FaceTime call that he is a Colorado version of Steve Irwin – the Crocodile Hunter.“That’s funny you say that because Steve Irwin has been my hero since I was a kid,” McWilliams said. “I always wanted to be like him.”McWilliams will need to stay out of the water during his vacation as his wound heals, but said he will be okay.“I don’t know if I’m unlucky, or really lucky,” McWilliams said. “But my dad said I need to buy a lottery ticket or something.” 1875

DENVER — Dozens of states filed an anti-trust lawsuit against Google on Thursday, alleging that the search giant has an illegal monopoly over the online search market that hurts consumers and advertisers.This lawsuit was announced just one day after Texas and nine other states filed their lawsuit against Google alleging anticompetitive practices in the advertising technology industry.The Thursday lawsuit was announced by Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser and was filed in federal court in Washington, D.C. by states represented by bipartisan attorneys general.The lawsuit was joined by the attorneys general of 35 states as well as the District of Columbia, Guam and Puerto Rico.The latest suit mirrors an anti-trust case brought by the Justice Department and 11 states earlier this fall that claimed Google uses anticompetitive agreements to get dominant position for Google Search on smartphones, according to CNN.The latest case goes further, also alleging Google moved to block or move down search results from certain other engines.The case is the third antitrust salvo to slam Google during the past two months as the Department of Justice and attorneys general from across the U.S. weigh in with their different variations on how they believe the company is abusing its immense power. 1307

DEL MAR (CNS) - A 4-year-old gelding died today during training at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, the second horse lost during the 81st summer meet.Irreproachable suffered an unspecified injury this morning during a workout, according to Del Mar track spokesman Mac McBride. Irreproachable had raced twice, once at Santa Anita in May and once at Del Mar last month, McBride said.The other fatality involved Lovely Lilia, a 3-year-old filly that suffered a fatal injury during a morning workout on July 11, and was later euthanized.McBride said Del Mar has not lost any horses during racing for the past two summer meets.While there were no racing deaths, four training deaths were recorded last summer, while the subsequent fall meeting saw three racing deaths and two in training.McBride noted that in both 2018 and 2019, the Jockey Club's Equine Injury Database recognized Del Mar as the safest major track in the United States.``We hope to continue in that role this year,'' he said. Democrat Dan McCready is withdrawing his concession in a North Carolina congressional race where investigators are probing allegations of election fraud.McCready got 905 fewer votes than Republican Mark Harris in the 9th District race. But the state elections board has refused to certify the results as it investigates potential misconduct with absentee ballots, making it the last undecided House contest in the country.
