Pennsylvania GOP Rep. Charlie Dent announced Tuesday he is resigning in the "coming weeks," a decision that came after he first said he'd be retiring at the end of his term in Congress.The moderate Republican tweeted the decision came after discussions with his family and "careful reflection.""I am especially proud of the work I have done to give voice to the sensible center in our country that is often overlooked or ignored," he said in the statement. "It is my intention to aggressively advocate for responsible governance and pragmatic solutions in the coming years."In a statement Tuesday, Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf, a Democrat, thanked Dent for his service."Charlie Dent is a voice of reason and civility that breaks through the chaos and partisanship of Washington and he will be missed," he said.The governor's office also announced that there will be a special election to fill Dent's seat, but no set date yet.The Pennsylvania Supreme Court's February order creating new congressional districts in the commonwealth beginning next term included language that, if there were to be a special congressional election before the new term next January, it would be held under the 2011 congressional district map.Already, 43 House Republicans have announced this cycle they are retiring, running for another office or resigning outright, including Dent and House Speaker Paul Ryan. Democrats, who need to pick up about two dozen seats to reclaim control of the House, are hoping that President Donald Trump's unpopularity helps lead to a blue wave in this fall's midterm elections.At the time of his announcement last year that he would retire, National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Steve Stivers said that the lawmaker's "leadership in Congress will be sorely missed," and added that he expects the seat to remain in Republican hands.Dent's office has not yet responded to CNN's request for when exactly he would leave office.Dent, who has served in Congress since 2005, previously told CNN Trump wasn't the determining factor in his decision to retire at the end of his term.  2112

PARMA, Ohio — It's a story 30 years in the making.Shortly before graduating from Parma Senior High School in Parma, Ohio, Jim Biehl customized, purchased and started wearing his class ring.It was your typical class ring with a green emerald gem, a cross etched below the stone and Biehl's signature on the inside.But Biehl would only spend about one year with that ring.When he was 17 years old he went on a church trip to Michigan. During the journey, the group stopped in Parma, Michigan. Ironically, that's when he would lose that brand new class ring."I woke up one morning to move on to the next destination of our trip, the next leg, and couldn't find it," Biehl said. "Haden't seen hide nor hair of it since then."The then-teenager spent a couple of years searching for the lost piece of jewelry only to come up short each and every time.Biehl thought the ring was gone forever — until recently.Biehl said he was alerted to a Facebook post inside the Parma Senior High School Alumni Association. PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — A handful of parents are fuming over a sex ed course being taught in their children’s school and the religious group that's teaching it.Mona Mangat, the mom of an 8th-grader at Thurgood Marshall Middle School in Pinellas County, Florida, said she and other parents are “angry about this, upset about this and trying to figure out how this is possible.”Mangat knew one thing for sure: Her daughter would opt out of a sex ed course being taught Thursday by the Christian faith-based group More2Life.“It’s shocking when you find out that faith-based groups are providing this information in schools. I had no idea. I thought that was not allowed in the United States, but I guess I was wrong," she explained.Mangat said she worries the curriculum is biased especially since the group is linked to a pro-life crisis pregnancy center in Largo called New Life Solutions. The More2Life group focuses on abstinence in their presentation to schools.In one presentation they told students, “Sex is like fire. It's safe in its proper context like a committed marriage, just like it's safe in a fireplace.”In another, while speaking about the high rate of STDs, a leader told students, "Have you ever played duck, duck, goose? Now it's like duck, duck, chlamydia." Scripps station WFTS in Tampa took parents' concerns straight to Jason Dorr, the director of More2Life, who said their program does not discuss religion."Our message is completely a health message,” Dorr explained.Dorr added, in line with Florida rules, they encourage abstaining from sex before marriage. The organization has spent 19 years talking to students about the consequences of STDs and teen pregnancy. “We always make this clear: We are not here to tell you what to do. This is an option for your life and we want to present that to you so you can make your own choices," Dorr added. “We are teaching them to have a healthy life and reach their goals without the consequences that can affect their future, so it's adding to what they're already learning at home.”Dorr also said 95 percent of teachers give them high ratings and highly recommend their program to other classrooms.Mangat is fighting to get the program out of schools and swapped out for one that focuses purely on facts.“The choice to have sex is intensely personal. You have to have complete information to make that decision," Mangat added.The Pinellas County School district said students are able to opt out of the presentations. Police in Troy, Michigan said a man armed with knives was shot and killed after charging at officers on Monday morning.According to police, they were called to the home on Saddle Brook for a domestic situation just after 7 a.m. on Monday.Officers followed the suspect, a 23-year-old man, and when he noticed officers, he started charging at them. Another officer in an unmarked car got out to distract the suspect, and then the suspect tried getting in an unmarked car.Police say he then turned toward the marked vehicle and started charging at the officer. The officer pulled out his taser and fired, but the taser was not effective and he kept charging toward officers.That's when the officer shot at the suspect several times, killing him.Police said it's been over 20 years since there was an officer-involved shooting in Troy. 849

Biden's transition team announced Monday that McCain will be the second Republican on the 16-member advisory board. McCain, a Republican, endorsed Biden last week. "Joe and I don't always agree on the issues, and I know he and John certainly had some passionate arguments, but he is a good and honest man," McCain tweeted. "He will lead us with dignity."McCain is the widow of former Republican senator and 2008 presidential nominee John McCain.
