SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Fire crews responded to a first-alarm brush fire in an east San Diego neighborhood Saturday.The fire ignited near the 5700 block of Bates Street around 1 p.m. in the Redwood Village neighborhood of east San Diego. Within 15 minutes, crews had stamped out the half-acre fire.No evacuations were ordered, according to SDFD.The cause of the fire wasn't immediately known. 405

Many of their top spots offer a view from up high of rolling hillsides in Ramona, wildlife in its natural habitat near Julian, and unique vegetation surrounding Pala.All one needs is their phone and a joy for the outdoors (in addition to hiking essentials).Here's where you can find park rangers' picks and why each trek is a favorite:Wilderness Gardens (14209 Hwy 76, Pala, Calif.): "Take the Upper Meadow Trail 3.2 miles to a large grassy expanse with seasonal wildflowers. Also, look for the foundation of an old grist mill on the County Historic Resource Board’s list of historic places. The foundation is about 0.8 miles into the hike."Agua Caliente (39555 Great Southern Overland Stage Route of 1849, Julian, Calif.): "Keep your eyes open for bighorn sheep as you walk along the Marsh Trail, and snap a selfie about a half a mile in at a palm grove. The trees are sure to please."El Capitan (13775 Blue Sky Ranch Road, Lakeside, Calif.): "You’ll really need to work for this photo. Take the main trail up, up, up. Feel rugged and pose next to an abandoned Jeep located near mile 5."Mt. Gower (17090 Gunn Stage Road, Ramona, Calif.): "Take the challenging Mt. Gower Ridge Trail to the summit, look for a granite boulder outcrop that mimic fangs. They are located around the 3-mile mark. Take a fantastic photo!"Lake Morena (2550 Lake Morena Drive, Campo, Calif.): "Head out on the 3.4-mile out-and-back dam access trail. At the scenic turnaround point, there is a gate to a historic dam that was constructed at the turn of the 19th century."Santa Ysabel East (500 Farmer Road, Julian, Calif.): "From the Farmer Road Staging Area, hike 2.3 miles to the Kanaka Loop junction and turn right. Following the Coast to Crest Trail 1.5 miles to a picnic table shaded by a stately oak. Enjoy the views of Palomar Mountain to the north and Cuyamaca Peak to the south. Then trek 2.5 miles up to a telescope, and continue on for about a quarter of a mile to the historic Lightway Beacon Tower – used in the 1920s by airmail carriers. Take all the pictures."Heritage Park (2454 Heritage Park Row, San Diego, Calif.): "Capture the history of Temple Beth Israel and its well-preserved 1800s-era style architecture."Tijuana River Valley Regional Park (2721 Monument Road, San Diego, Calif.): "Spooner’s Mesa offers panoramic, international views of the coast; look south into Mexico and north across miles of San Diego County coastline. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Residents in Hillcrest are worried homeless encampments will start more fires in the area.Back in March, a canyon underneath the Vermont Street Bridge went up in flames. Fire crews say it was started from an encampment. Marina Macklin knows that problem all too well. "You're very afraid of the fires," said Macklin. "Because they move really quickly out there because it's so dry." MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhoodNearly two months later, debris from the Vermont Street Bridge remains in the canyon. "They cleaned it up? No." said Macklin. "It's all still there, it's all laying down there."According to the University Heights Community Association, the canyon west of the bridge is owned by Caltrans. The east side is city property. Councilman Christopher Ward's office says they've been working to clean it. "If they say they're cleaning it up they're taking their time," said Macklin. "Why?" She says cleaning it won't solve the problem. "They go down there, set up their camps, somebody starts a fire, and they leave for a while," said Macklin."The city might go down there and do a little bit of stuff and then as soon as it's all clear and they feel safe the homeless go back in there again."Councilman Ward's office said they've already added more security guards to the Hillcrest Market area. "Security guards up here don’t do anything for the canyon," said Macklin. "I don’t even think they're supposed to go there. Is the city gonna hire security guards to go down into the canyon? I don’t think so." 1668

Sandbox Pizza in Pacific Beach is an example of a restaurant stuck in limbo while helping prevent the spread of COVID-19. This past weekend, they held an event offering , 14-inch pizzas to all customers. "It's trying times for everyone so we figured it was something fun and the least we could do to try and help everyone out, from families that are out of work, to industry employees, to our first responders," Yankle added. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Police have identified the victim and suspect involved in a deadly downtown stabbing on July 1.According to police, 43-year-old Canthon E. Tripplett was stabbed on the 400 block of Fifth Avenue around 2:30 a.m.When they arrived, officers found a companion of the man providing first aid. The man was taken to the hospital where he later died, police say.RELATED: Man stabbed to death in downtown San DiegoAfter investigating the stabbing, police learned that Tripplett was injured during a fight with two men on the sidewalk. A man matching the description, David Zertuche, 30, was arrested for murder and has been booked into jail for the homicide. 687
