In just the past two days, two young athletes have been rushed to the hospital during sports practice. Just outside of Dallas, a 13-year-old student collapsed at football practice and later died. In Pennsylvania, a teen remains in coma after suffering a serious head injury.  The NOW’s investigative reporter Jace Larson obtained a new state-by-state ranking, showing how well states do at preventing and reducing the number of children who have a sudden emergency, while playing middle and high school sports.Samantha Scarneo headed up the study, which ranks how well states protect youth athletes. It’s not always what you teach, but rather how you teach.And at the University of California, Irvine, lecturer Thomas Eppel, Ph.D. is helping educate others for the digitally driven world.“I spend more time, or at least as much time, teaching online as I do in a traditional face-to-face format,” he said.Eppel is talking about is UCI’s Digital Learning Lab at the Paul Merage School of Business, a full-on production studio designed for remote learning which was built before COVID-19 forced campuses to close.“I always say the Paul Merage School of Business was maybe the most prepared school, certainly here on campus, when the pandemic hit,” Eppel said.He believes the digital learning lab offers three distinct advantages to traditional learning: convenience, flexibility and mastery.“To be able to watch a video over and over again and until you truly master the material, I think is another huge advantage of online education,” Eppel said.It's an academic advantage students say has helped them prepare for life post pandemic.“In terms of COVID, I think it did mean we were better prepared for what was happening,” said Sarah Kutner, an MBA candidate at UCI.Kutner has taken online classes at other schools before but says the DLL is online learning at a higher level.“I think it definitely has moved our transition because we already did have some focus on how can digital technology augment our learning experience,” she said.With more colleges transitioning to remote learning, a lot of them are reaching out to leaders at UCI, looking at ways they can improve their digital learning experiences.“We’re also able to help our sister schools here at UCI along with the central campus,” said Natalie Blair, UCI’s director of digital learning.She says with more schools investing in this kind of education, her staff is committed to helping others.“We’re definitely leading and if you stop learning you stop leading,” Blair said. “So, we’re always iterating and improving our methods.”Blair added that even though more students are now learning from a distance, this technology means that they’re not learning alone. 2130

I wear a lot of jewelry that I know makes a woman feel really good; it makes her feel a little bit more bouncy," said, Lilly Ogle, who is a jewelry maker.The cash from her creations sold around the world helps pay the bills."I've sold pieces in Denmark, Finland, Germany—just all over," she said. "I use real stones; I use onyx, pearl, Mother of Pearl, jade, all kinds."Last year, she saved 5. That money was meant to buy Christmas gifts for her family."It took me a whole year to save that money," Ogle said. So she bought 5 in Amazon gift cards at her local Kroger store, and then this happened:"I got home 20 minutes later, tried to use those cards, and they said they have already been used—that's impossible. I just got them," Ogle recalled. She says Amazon told her they couldn't help because she did not order the cards directly from them.Though she had her receipts, Kroger said it could not help because gift cards are like cash. The cards "...cannot be replaced, and no refunds can be made."Kroger also said, "Cashiers have no way to know if the gift card belongs to the person presenting it or to someone else ... since the cards have no names on them and no ID is required for their use.""I'm not trying to get more than I paid for the cards. I feel like I deserve 5 back that I put out for the cards," Ogle explained. Blackhawk Network, the company that oversees the Amazon cards, said they could not provide specifics on what happened to Ogle's card. They did review our request and, in the end, refunded the 5. The company said in a statement:"We can share that we are in contact with her to resolve this matter to her satisfaction. Our advice to any cardholder that may have questions, concerns, suspicions about a card is that it's very important to call the customer service number on the back of the card immediately."We have processes to help victims of fraud through restitution when appropriate.
