ROME (AP) — After months in a Rome jail, a trial has begun for a pair of schoolmates from California who are accused of murdering an Italian policeman during vacation in Italy. The first hearing, held Wednesday, is expected to deal with procedural manners. Carabinieri paramilitary officer Mario Cerciello Rega was unarmed and on plainclothes assignment when he was stabbed 11 times near the Americans’ hotel in the early hours of July 26, 2019. Prosecutors have alleged that Finnegan Lee Elder, now 20, thrust a 7-inch attack-style knife repeatedly into the 35-year-old officer, while Gabriel Natale-Hjorth, now 19, scuffled nearby with the officer's partner.Prosecutors believe the suspects attacked the officers to avoid arrest after attempting to buy drugs in Rome’s trendy Trastevere area. The defendants have said they're innocent. They say they acted in self-defense, believing the officers were ill-intentioned. The circumstances that led to the officer’s death remain unclear, but there’s overwhelming evidence against the suspects, including the murder weapon that was found in their possession, 1121

A group of scientists have discovered 280-million-year-old fossil tracks in a remote area of the Grand Canyon that predate the the appearance of the earliest dinosaurs, according to a press release from the Grand Canyon National Park. According to the press release, an international team of paleontologists discovered "extremely well-preserved trackways of primitive tetrapods (four-footed animals) which inhabited an ancient desert environment."Paleontologists recognized the fossil tracks and say they were produced by a "long-extinct relative of very early reptiles... of extinct tetrapods known as diadectomorphs, a primitive group that possessed characteristics of both amphibians and reptiles."The characteristics of the newly discovered tracks suggest the creature that made the prints walked on all four legs, with each foot containing five "clawless digits.""Although the actual track maker for the Grand Canyon footprints may never be known, the Grand Canyon trackways preserve the travel of a very early terrestrial vertebrate," the press release stated. 1079

A 1,000-bed U.S. Navy hospital ship was rushed back into service to provide medical help to New York City, now the epicenter of the nation’s outbreak. The ship, USNS Comfort, is scheduled to arrive Monday at a Manhattan pier a week after its sister ship, the USNS Mercy arrived in Los Angeles to preform similar duty on the West Coast. President Donald Trump traveled to Norfolk Naval Station to see the ship off on Saturday as he aims to highlight the federal response to the pandemic. The ship has 12 operating rooms as well as radiology suites and a CT scanner. It also has ICU beds, a lab and a pharmacy. The president said 1,200 Navy medical personnel will be aboard the1,000-bed hospital ship to provide medical care. However, Trump stated the ship will not be used to house COVID-19 positive patients. Instead, it will serve to treat other life-threatening emergencies. Patients with the new coronavirus will continue to be treated at hospitals on land. Before departing the White House Saturday, Trump told reporters he has spoken with some governors and is considering some type of an enforceable quarantine to prevent people in New York and parts of New Jersey and Connecticut from traveling. He told reporters at the White House that it would be for a “short period of time, if we do it at all.” The president says he's spoken with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and New York's Andrew Cuomo. However, Cuomo said at a briefing in New York that he didn't talk about any quarantine during a conversation Saturday with Trump. San Francisco is expected to set a groundbreaking precedent on Tuesday by voting to become the first city in the country to ban police from using facial recognition. Part of the reason: concerns about accuracy. “With Caucasian faces, facial recognition is pretty good. It has a 90 to 95 percent accuracy rate,” explains Darrell West, director of the Center for Technology Innovation with the Brookings Institution. “But with minorities, sometimes the accuracy rate drops to 70 percent.”West also says that once a person’s image is in the database, there’s uncertainty surrounding what it could be used for. A Georgetown law study found 1 in 2 American adults is in a law enforcement face recognition network. Law enforcement has argued the technology helps solve crimes or improve investigations. Agencies across the country can use driver’s license photos or mug shots to match someone's identity. “All it's doing is using something that's readily available,” says Sheriff Bob Gualtieri with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Department in Florida. But it's not just law enforcement using the technology. Stores, airports and some concert venues are all starting to work it into their operations. It's become so mainstream, Congress is now considering a bill to stop businesses from collecting facial recognition data on customers without their permission. “I think people find it very intrusive that you're just walking down the street or going into the store and somebody's recording your face and then attaching your identity to that image,” West says.If the bill in Congress passes, it would be the first federal law on facial recognition. 1656
