Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez just went from bartender to Congress woman. But the youngest member of the House of Representatives says she's having a hard time finding affordable housing on a working-class salary. Members of Congress have to live in their home state and Washington, D.C., where homes are small and expensive. Rent ranges from ,500 to ,800 a month. For New York's Ocasio-Cortez, that means paying rent in two of the most expensive cities in the country.“To live in two major cities at 29 years old, it's not easy for anybody to do until she gets that income that she's waiting for once her job starts,” Steve Gaich, a relator in D.C., says. After winning her election, Ocasio-Cortez told the New York Times, "I have three months without a salary before I’m a member of Congress. So, how do I get an apartment? Those little things are very real."Other members of Congress have admitted to sleeping on cots and couches in their congressional offices, while some share apartments and homes.“I think the sticker shock does take people back sometimes, and they don't realize I’m paying 0 a month for a full house in Kansas or in Iowa, and 0 might get you a shared room in a house in D.C.,” Gaich says.Members of the House make 4,000, and Ocasio-Cortez admits she'll be fine once she starts receiving a paycheck. But is it enough for the average American to afford to serve in Congress?  “I don't think you have to be rich to run for Congress. I think she has shown that's an example of someone that's not that wealthy and doesn't have a lot of support coming financially, so I think she's definitely paved the way for a lot of other normal average working, modest income people to be able to run for Congress,” Gaich says. 1757

About 700 women die each year from pregnancy-related complications, according to the CDC. Monday they launched “Hear Her”, a campaign to raise awareness and provide educational material to empower pregnant and postpartum women. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data shows there are considerable racial disparities; women who are Black, American Indian, or Alaska Native are two to three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women. There is a website with more information on the CDC’s site, that includes personal stories from women who had serious complications, and a list of signs to watch out for to discuss with your doctor. Some of these symptoms include headaches that won’t go away, fever, extreme swelling, severe belly pain, and overwhelming tiredness.“Pregnancy and childbirth should not place a mother’s life in jeopardy, yet in far too many instances, women are dying from complications,” said CDC Director Robert R. Redfield, MD, in a statement. “This seminal campaign is intended to disrupt the too-familiar pattern of preventable maternal mortality and encourage everyone in a woman’s life to be attentive and supportive of her health during this important time.”The campaign is focused on women who are pregnant, new mothers, and their friends and family engaging in conversations and talking about health concerns.“A woman knows her body. Listening and acting upon her concerns during or after pregnancy could save her life,” said Wanda Barfield, M.D., M.P.H., director of CDC’s Division of Reproductive Health at the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion.According to CDC data, about one third of maternal deaths happen during pregnancy, about a third happen during delivery or within a week of having a baby, and the remaining third happen between one week and one year postpartum. 1880

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is opening a tuition-free preschool in Washington state.According to Bezos' philanthropic organization Day One Fund's website, the Bezos Academy will open on Oct. 19 in Des Moines, Washington. The Montessori-inspired preschool will serve children between the ages of three and five and will prioritize low-income families."In selecting communities for our preschools, we consider a wide range of data, including income levels, participation in free and reduced-cost meal programs, and gaps in access to licensed childcare providers," the organization stated. "We also look for local organizations and businesses that understand the needs of their community members and are excited about the prospect of hosting a tuition-free, high-quality preschool in their neighborhood."The Bezos Academy will be five days a week and run year-round. 868

ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- Within a quiet lab, are scattered fragments of America’s storied past.“I never thought I'd be doing anything like this,” said Kenneth McNeill, an eight-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He also spent three years in the reserves and now is a part of the “Veterans Curation Program,” which provides training in archiving and archaeology.“I think one thing that happens a lot is that we just exist, and we don't think about things that happened in the past,” McNeill said.In the lab, though, the past is never out of reach. The artifacts come from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, who discovered the items at sites across the country during the excavation and construction of major projects, like dams and canals.“The Army Corps of Engineers had a need for people to do this curation work and the veterans have a need to find work and gain new skills and feel comfortable getting back into the workforce,” said Sarah Janesko, administrator of the Veterans Curation Program. The lab spaces are provided around the country by New South Associates, a company which specializes in archaeology and partnered with the Army Corps to train the veterans.“They feel like they're part of this larger mission to preserve our history and the cultural materials that come with it,” Janesko said.In just over 10 years, the Army Corps said the program has trained nearly 700 veterans, with 72% of them landing permanent jobs, some with the Smithsonian and National Park Service, while another 19% have gone on to further their studies in college.“It also gives us a sense of purpose, which is something I think veterans sometimes need when they separate from the military,” McNeill said. “We live in an area that has a lot of history to it. So, it's good that we are helping restore some of these things.”All of this happening, while they gain new skills, along with a deeper appreciation of the past. 1909

Activated charcoal is the craze in the beauty industry to help get those pearly whites, but at what cost is it taking on oral health? What is activated charcoal? It's not the charcoal used in your backyard barbeque. According to Dr. Todd Shatkin of Aesthetic Associates Centre in Amherst, New York, it's a slightly abrasive powder usually formed by coconut and is used in many different aspects of the health industry. Activated charcoal is an absorptive property, and it's designed to absorb and lift blemishes from teeth. It's used for cleansing, weight loss treatments, and skin care products. Now it's being used for teeth whitening to remove stains. How does it work?A toothbrush is dipped into the powder and is brushed directly onto teeth. The activated charcoal powder removes the extrinsic stains; stains that are caused by wine, coffee and other foods and drink. "Charcoal-based products would be good to remove the surface stain, but it won't internally bleach or whiten the teeth from within," Shatkin said. Is activated charcoal safe to use?Shatkin says yes.He says, to first make sure the product is FDA approved, and check the abrasiveness level. "The enamel is really pretty strong," he said. "If you're in the enamel your probably not going to do any harm to your teeth. But if the patient has worn through the enamel into the dentin, it causes sensitivity and causes discomfort. If you use abrasive materials on the dentin, it will just make things worse."He says, in the end, it all comes down to good oral hygiene and visiting your dentist every three to six months. 1716
