The FBI says a British socialite who was accused by many women of helping procure underage sex partners for Jeffrey Epstein has been arrested in Bradford, New Hampshire.The FBI said Thursday that Ghislaine Maxwell was taken into custody at around 8:30 a.m. on charges related to the Epstein scandal.Epstein killed himself in a federal detention center in New York last summer while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.Maxwell was accused by many women of recruiting them to give Epstein massages, during which they were pressured into sex. She's been charged with four counts relating to sex trafficking and two counts of perjury.During a press conference Thursday, Acting Attorney for the Southern District of New York Audrey Strauss thanked the victims who came forward to authorities. She said that without their help, they would not be able to charge Maxwell.Strauss also urged Prince Andrew to speak with investigators and cooperate with the ongoing investigations into Epstein and Maxwell. The British royal was known to be friendly with Epstein during the time abuse occurred and has described their relationship as a friendship. The Department of Education on Friday proposed new rules for dealing with sexual harassment and assault on college campuses that would bolster the rights of those accused of wrongdoing.The proposed rules, which now face a public comment period of 60 days before they are enshrined, seek to narrow the definition of sexual misconduct on campuses at a time of national reckoning about sexual abuse."Every survivor of sexual violence must be taken seriously, and every student accused of sexual misconduct must know that guilt is not predetermined," Education Secretary Betsy DeVos said in a statement. "We can, and must, condemn sexual violence and punish those who perpetrate it, while ensuring a fair grievance process. Those are not mutually exclusive ideas. They are the very essence of how Americans understand justice to function."The new rules would "adopt a clear definition of sexual harassment actionable under Title IX," which prohibits discrimination based on sex for schools and programs that receive federal funding, including protection from sexual harassment.One stipulation would narrow the definition of sexual harassment to mean "unwelcome conduct on the basis of sex that is so severe, pervasive and objectively offensive that it denies a person access to the school's education program or activity." The new policy would be a departure from the Obama administration's broader definition of sexual harassment as "unwelcome conduct of a sexual nature."The new rules also place an emphasis on "presumption of innocence" and would allow those accused the option of cross-examining their accusers.The department's announcement on Friday was certain to be met with outrage from victim advocacy groups. The Dallas Police Department said on Tuesday evening that two of its officers and a civilian loss prevention officer were shot at a Dallas Home Depot. The Dallas Police confirmed earlier in the evening that the two officer were in critical condition. Dallas Police Chief Renee Hall said late Tuesday evening that all three victims are out of surgery in a Dallas hospital. "We're asking for your continued prayers for them and their families," Hall said. The shooting reportedly took place around 4:11 p.m. local time.  In a press conference, police identified Armando Juarez, 29, as a person of interest. He is believed to have left the incident driving a white pickup truck. Around 9 p.m. local time, Juarez was arrested after a car pursuit involving Dallas Police and a white pickup truck.Hall said that Juarez will be charged with multiple counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, and also had an outstanding warrant for his arrest. The CDC could take over handling COVID-19 data coming in from states and medical facilities again, according to media reports.This week, during a briefing on a visit to Arkansas, Dr. Deborah Birx said the CDC is working "to build a revolutionary new data system so it can be moved back to the CDC" for tracking COVID-19 treatment, patients and PPE needs, according to the Wall Street Journal.The CDC’s National Healthcare Safety Network site had been tracking COVID-19 cases and data since the pandemic started.Then, abruptly in mid-July, hospitals and states were asked to stop using it and send their information directly to Health and Human Services, and a new database created by private contractor TeleTracking.The request was initially made in an effort to cut down on duplicate requests and minimize the reporting burden on hospitals and facilities.However, many hospitals, state officials and journalists noted the numbers in the new system seemed incomplete and the database was slow to update.The CDC is reportedly working with the U.S. Digital Service, according to the WSJ, an agency set up during the Obama administration to help improve HealthCare.gov, the marketplace for insurance plans that are part of the Affordable Care Act.There was no timeline mentioned as part of Dr. Birx’s comments, according to NPR. 1333
