“You might have heard about them in the news--murderers, violent, destructive--and I can tell you that a lot of what you heard is true, because I used to be a member of MS-13," Gerardo Lopez shared in a recent TED Talk.Gerardo Lopez's story isn’t fictional. The gang warfare and drive-by shootings are a part of his true-life story."I was 14 years old... and I was going to join MS-13," Lopez said.MS-13 is an international gang rooted in Los Angeles with ties to Central America. It's widely considered one of the most dangerous organized crime organizations on the west coast and Lopez spent years on the inside.He carries pieces of his past wherever he goes; they're forever imprinted on his body. However, that past carried him onto the stage or an unlikely appearance as part of the TED Talk series. Lopez was picked out of thousands of applicants to tell his personal story in a setting usually reserved for influencers, like CEO's, celebrities, and motivational speakers.“Picture this: El Salvador -- the 1980s -- a brutally violent civil war, military soldiers kicking in front doors in the middle of the night," Lopez said. Growing up in a rundown neighborhood, with very few programs at school, Lopez wanted to be part of a community with power, pride and respect. That community was right down the street.“It was hard to find a different outlet... it was always there," Lopez said.By the time he was a teenager, his life was already consumed by drugs, alcohol, and gun violence. Gerardo says some of his closest friends were killed. "It was hurt people... hurting... hurt people," Lopez said.He spent years trapped in that lifestylem until he was approached by a friend who'd found his way out of gang life."He approached me, and he said that he started the group Homies Unidos and I was like, 'whoa what's that, and I don't think I want to go ahead and join that, ya know.' And he was like 'well, you should go ahead and give it a try' and he was a former MS-13 gang member... a person I looked up to," Lopez said.Homies Unidos is a violence prevention and intervention organization."It's a group that opens up the doors for kids that want change in their lives, or they feel lost," he describes. "They feel that nobody listens to them. They feel isolated at times." Lopez says being a part of Homies Unidos, and becoming an activist against gang violence, gave him more power, pride and respect than he had ever experienced with MS-13. So much so, that years later, he felt inspired to become a director of the organization in 2016. “Everybody has a story, right? So, it's about them having the Homies Unidos format as a safe haven for them to go ahead and share their life stories of the stuff they've been through. And not only the stuff they've been through, but now, how is it that they're going to go ahead and help others as well," Lopez said.Homies Unidos prevents kids from entering gangs and helps those already in gangs to get out. The goal is to guide kids so they can relate to each other, teaching them to become a productive member of society. Sergio Gomez started attending the group after having issues in school. He says the group saved him because he's now graduatingAs a leader of the peer-led group, Gomez says he's able to help others who are facing the same challenges.“I’m like, 'bro, why are you leaving? Just stay in school because it's better for you. What are you going to do on the streets, nothing? So keep in class,’” Gomez said.Gomez aspires to be like Lopez, potentially starting his own Homies Unidos chapter and maybe one day delivering his own motivational speech.As for Gerardo's TED Talk, it's been watched more than 3 million times on YouTube, providing a glimpse at why getting out of gangs can be difficult -- even deadly -- for kids without any other options.“A lot of people that didn't know now know the work that we're doing in gang intervention, and how important it is to go ahead and do this kind of work. And humanize those that some people at times demonize. People just want to belong… to be a part of something. A man is accused of setting fire to cardboard that a homeless man was sleeping under in Southern California. The Glendale Police Department says 32-year-old Richard Smallets intentionally set the fire on a sidewalk near a popular shopping center on Sept. 12. Police responded to the scene at about 1:22 a.m. to assist firefighters called to extinguish the fire. An investigation revealed the homeless man was awoken by the odor of smoke, realized the cardboard above him was on fire and unsuccessfully attempted to put out the flames with bottled water. Later that afternoon, police say detectives retrieved video surveillance from a nearby business that captured a man intentionally lighting the cardboard on fire and then taking photos. Officers later came in contact with Smallets at nearby Central Park. After questioning, he was identified as the suspect and subsequently placed under arrest on an arson charge. The next day, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed an attempted murder charge against Smallets. His bail has been set at million. The motive behind the crime is unknown at this time. 1133

A man died when he was crushed by an elevator inside a Manhattan building Thursday morning.The 30-year-old man was on an elevator with two people inside the Manhattan Promenade on Third Avenue in Kips Bay around 8:45 a.m., sources say. When he got off, the man fell through a gap, and became lodged between the elevator door and the elevator shaft. The elevator then crushed him, sources said.The Manhattan Promenade is a mixed-use commercial and residential building.The victim's identity was not immediately released.It was not immediately clear if there were any violations or issues with the elevator. The building had been recently fined for unsafe elevator conditions, the NY Times reported.In a statement, the Department of Buildings said they are investigating the incident.“The Department of Buildings is investigating this incident aggressively and will take all appropriate enforcement actions. Elevators are the safest form of travel in New York, due to the city’s stringent inspection and safety requirements. We’re determined to find out what went wrong at this building and seek ways to prevent incidents like this in the future.”The Medical Examiner is at the scene. 1194

A cadet at the US Military Academy West Point received fatal injuries in a ski accident last month. Days later, a state Supreme Court judge granted his parents' petition to save their son's sperm in order to continue his legacy and their family lineage.Another skier found 21-year-old Peter Zhu unresponsive on a ski slope on the academy grounds in upstate New York on February 23, according to a school news release. He was airlifted to Westchester Medical Center, where doctors determined that Zhu's spinal cord was fractured, and he was declared medically brain-dead three days later, court documents say.Zhu's parents, Yongmin and Monica Zhu of Concord, California, filed a petition Friday morning, pleading with the court to allow the hospital to proceed with a sperm retrieval procedure on their son's body.He always wanted to live on a ranch and raise a family and have horses, his parents say in in their petition.More than his wishes to become a father, Peter is the only male child to continue the Zhu family lineage. His parents attribute this mostly to China's "one-child" policy, which forced his uncles to each have only one daughter, the petition says."This is our one and only chance of fulfilling Peter's wishes and preserving his incredible legacy," the petition says.Westchester Medical Center doctors were hesitant but willing to perform the procedure if the family could get a court to authorize it, according to the petition. The medical workers were "extremely kind and understanding," it says.Court proceedings were under a time constraint because Zhu, who was an organ donor, was being kept on life support for an organ donor removal procedure scheduled for Friday. New York Supreme Court Judge John Colangelo granted the request two hours after it was filed Friday morning.Colangelo's motion said the reproductive material should be stored at a sperm bank or other facility of the family's choosing until the court could conclusively decide on the matter.The family's lawyer declined to confirm whether the procedure went ahead as requested or whether Zhu remains on life support. The Zhus did not respond to a request for comment."Peter was the love of our lives. He has brought us more joy, pride and happiness than words can say," his parents say in the petition.Zhu, who was to graduate this year, was president of the Cadet Medical Society. He was expected to receive a commission as a medical corps officer and to attend medical school at the Uniformed Services University of Health Science in Maryland."Peter was one of the top cadets in the Class of 2019, very well-known and a friend to all. He embodied the ideals of the Corps of Cadets and its motto of Duty, Honor, Country and all who knew Peter will miss him," Brig. Gen.
