CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- In cities all over the country, drag queens are reading to kids and soon they'll be holding story time at the Otay Ranch library in Chula Vista. "I thought it was like one of the best things ever I wish I had a drag queen story time when I was younger," said "Strawberry Corncakes", a local artist who isn't taking part in the upcoming event, but understands very well why performers like her are striking a chord with families and kids across the country. "We're characters, we're cartoon characters brought to life. Who walks around with green eyes and green lips?" Along with the popularity though has come controversy. Pastor Amado Huizar is a father of four and says he's heard the events aren't just about reading books. "Teaching more about drag queens and what that's about which tends to lead to adult entertainment and that's where I think it's inappropriate as a dad as a husband."But the performers themselves say that's just not true. "There's no hidden agenda, we're not teaching them how to be drag queens we're not teaching them how to do anything except love themselves and read," said Corncakes. Huizar is trying to get the city leaders to talk to him and others and postpone the event in the meantime. And while opponents admit the event is optional, they have an issue with it being held at a public library. "I don't have to go but that doesn't mean I have to keep away from it either," said Huizar. The city of Chula Vista issued a statement that reads in part:"The Chula Vista Public Library welcomes everyone, and our extensive programming includes and reflects the diverse communities we serve. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Some unusual notices are showing up on front doors in the South Bay, sparking confusion and worries.On the first Saturday in May came the first encounter. Off J Street, Tony heard a knock and saw a casually dressed man at his door from a company called Pacific Home Remodeling. "He was looking to inspect homes for estimates of remodeling costs," said Tony, who asked us not to use his real name.Tony is a renter and told the man he wasn't interested. "I had to continually repeat, 'I'm not interested' before he finally left. He came back a second time a few days later - and the same situation," said Tony.Once again, the man was asked to leave. A week later, Tony and his cousin found a flyer stuck on their front door. It read 'NOTICE' in big block letters, and included a name and cell number, along with 'We were here for inspection and we missed you. Please call to arrange a new inspection.' The company at the bottom of the paper: Pacific Home Remodeling. A confused Tony set it aside. "I thought maybe they meant to put this notice on another house," said Tony.Then on Tuesday, the man turned up again. Tony's cousin was the only on home and heard a banging at the door. He was just inside the door, when he saw the man with his hand on the knob outside."He uses me cousin's name and my name saying we authorized him to come inspect home and look around. That wasn't true. My cousin told him to leave, and 10 minutes later, he returns and says he just got approval from me. Problem for him was I was on the phone," said Tony. Despite the notice, neither of them had given approval for an inspection. Tony later posted the incident on Nextdoor. Neighbors reported finding the same notices on their doors. One claimed a salesperson tried to talk his way into home past a confused elderly woman. A spokesperson with the company said they're looking into Tony's claims, but defended the use of the notices as "marketing material." Tony doesn't buy it. "It's deceptive. Very official looking. They put these notices on doors and hope people don't communicate with one another, and gain access to the house. It's very concerning," said Tony.Tony attempted to file a police report with Chula Vista Police, but says he was told there wasn't evidence a crime was committed.According to the Contractors State License Board, the Los-Angeles based Pacific Home Remodeling has had several citations dating back to 2015 and was put on probation. The latest accusations include poor work and failure to obtain permits. Hearing dates set for later this month and June could determine what happens to the company's license. 2764

(KGTV) - A fire in a drainage tunnel had Chula Vista firefighters donning protective masks Thursday.The fire broke out about 4:30 Thursday afternoon at Eastlake Parkway and Otay Lakes Road, near the Vons and Lowe's shopping centers. It was quickly knocked down."Witnesses reported smoke billowing from a storm drain and several people running from the area," Chula Vista Fire IAFF local 2180 officials posted on twitter. "Please give our firefighters room while they work."The Chula Vista Fire Department said juveniles started the fire in the drain and left the area. No one was hurt.Officials are searching for two teens who may be involved in the incident.Firefighters are battling a tunnel fire off of Otay Lakes Road. (KGTV) - A Chula Vista jiu-jitsu instructor pleaded not guilty Wednesday on four counts of lewd acts against a child under the age of 14.Deputy District Attorney Julie Lynn told 10News the alleged incident involving Gabriel Gonzalez happened August 18. It did not take place at the Chula Vista Jiu-Jitsu facility on Third Ave. where Gonzalez worked, Lynn said.The judge issued a protective order for Gonzalez to stay away from two females, whose names 10News is withholding due to the sensitive nature of the charges.Gonzalez’ bail was also increased to 0,000. 606

Part of the lyrics includes, "When you're weak, I'll be strong. And when you let go, I'll hold on." If you're familiar with the song, then you know it's about the battle against breast cancer, and it's the mantra for a small business in Chula Vista. On the surface, it may appear to be an ordinary beauty salon. But there is nothing ordinary about what's happening at Rico's on 3rd. Anna Maria "Snooky" Rico is the owner, stylist, and angelic spirit of Rico's. "Everything that happens in this room is free of charge," says a smiling Rico. Rico is showing off a private room in her Third Avenue salon. It's home to the Loving You Through It Foundation, where over 800 women have transformed from cancer patients to cancer fighters. "Giving and serving others is good medicine," adds Rico. "It's good medicine to help others."Rico's medicine is pure love and compassion. When the women are ready, faced with the loss of their hair because of chemotherapy, she offers to either cut their hair or shave their heads and then helps them pick out head covers, scarves, or custom wigs provided by the American Cancer Society. "We try to meet them at their point of need," says Rico. "What is it that you would like for us to do for you today?"And there are so many grateful clients that Rico has served. "She's uh, she's like a sister to me," says Delia Calara. Calara was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015. She was given a pamphlet about Rico's services at the hospital. It was just what she needed during a desperate, dark time in her life. "You know when people come through here, we're apprehensive, we're fearful," says Calara through tears. "And then, when we leave, we're just overwhelmed, and I tell her I love her, and thank you."Kathleen Kubik, another client, was just diagnosed with breast cancer in April. In an attempt to explain the battle she was about to undergo, Rico reminded Kubik how soldiers shave their heads before entering the military. "They shave their heads, their hair because it's a hindrance for battle. That's what sold me," says Kubik. "We see them at their crisis moment. I know what it's like to be in that type of crisis," adds Rico. Snooky Rico knows the battle well because she too has been in those very same trenches, battling breast cancer. Rico herself is a cancer survivor. "One thing I always encourage the ladies is to never look at yourself through other people's eyes, to remember who you are," adds Rico. "You have to remember that you're a mother, you're a daughter, you're a sister, you're an aunt. All that you are to those people remember who you are." 2752
