CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- One man was arrested following a narcotics bust in the South Bay Wednesday. According to authorities, the incident happened at 28 2nd Avenue in Chula Vista. The DEA says they served a search warrant at the home as part of an ongoing investigation. (KGTV) -- The Sweetwater Union High School District said Tuesday that it decided to end the employment agreement of Dr. Karen Janney, the district’s superintendent.Janney had been under pressure to step down following a multi-million dollar budget shortfall that prompted an investigation into possible misappropriation of funds.In June of 2020, the board voted 4-1 to place Janney on paid administrative leave.Tuesday afternoon, a district spokesperson wrote to ABC10 News that a new vote happened in a board meeting on Monday night. Video posted by the district only refers to the termination of an employee. Tuesday, the district spokesperson sent ABC10 News the following statement: "The Sweetwater Union High School District Board of Trustees provided Dr. Janney a 90-day notice to end her employment agreement, pursuant to Article 17b of that agreement. On behalf of the entire Sweetwater community, we want to thank Dr. Janney for her many years of service and dedication to the district, its board, and our students."Janney took over as superintendent of the district in 2015. Three years later, the district reported a million budget deficit.Also in June, a report from California’s Fiscal Crisis and Management Assistance Team reported that there was enough evidence that fraud or misappropriation of funds may have occurred within the district. CHULA VISTA (KGTV) - Chula Vista police are searching for a possible arsonist after four brush fires were set within minutes of each other Thursday morning.Firefighters responded around 3:30 a.m. to the area south of Lake Crest Drive and east of Wueste Road in Eastlake.While crews were working to put out the fire, they received a second fire call nearly three miles away on Eastlake Parkway.The third brush fire happened a short time after on Telegraph Canyon Road, and then the fourth fire broke out near Vista Oak Place.No one was hurt, and firefighters were able to put out all the fires.Witnesses told fire investigators they saw a silver Lexus leaving the scene of the fourth fire around 4:15 a.m.Anyone with information on the suspected arsonist or the incidents is asked to contact the Metro Arson Strike Team (MAST) at 619-236-6815. 850

(KGTV) – A stretch of Chula Vista’s famed Third Avenue will be closed every Sunday in August to allow for expanded outdoor dining and other activities, all while practicing social distancing.The Third Avenue Village Association announced that Third Avenue will be shut down to traffic from E Street through Center Street starting Sunday, Aug. 2.The cross streets of E Street, Davidson Street, and F Street will be open for vehicle traffic. (KGTV) — A South Bay family is trying to help residents at senior care facilities one letter at a time.When Mariana Hughes learned of the ban on non-essential visitors at local senior care facilities, the Eastlake High English teacher came up with an idea."It just broke my heart. I didn't want them to be forgotten," said Hughes.Hughes contacted four facilities in the South Bay, including several veterans homes. Her 14-year-old son Christian then started writing letters, a bunch of them. The letters are aimed at injecting a little joy."I'm just going to write more letters, whatever I can do to make people happy ... because I know these are hard times for them," he said.Hughes posted her idea on Facebook, which quickly caught fire. Others promised to write their own letters. Some sent 10news photos of children showing their cards, drawings and letters, after another teacher began her own campaign to send letters to nursing homes in the East County."If we get the word out and this catches on, lots more seniors that are lonely, afraid and sad are going to see that their community loves them," said Hughes.It's a love received, word by word."We can't maybe fix the whole world, but each person can do something every single day to lift up other people ... and this is our opportunity," said Hughes.Hughes says she's taking precautions, including washing hands before letter writing, and using stickers instead of stamps.
