Drivers entering the Kent Ranch HOA in Escondido are now greeted by high-tech license plate readers. According to the creators of the tech, the cameras help police solve an average of two to three cases a day nationwide. The cameras don’t have facial recognition, only the ability to identify the car. Critics of the technology worry the data could be abused and is an invasion of privacy. The HOA did hear from some residents about privacy concerns, but believed public safety outweighed the concerns. Residents can request their vehicle not be captured by the cameras. 739

A study looking at air quality during the pandemic finds while the visible smog may have lifted in some areas, the air pollutants never really went away."It has been assumed that fewer cars on the road might have led to a decline in the level of air pollution outdoors and, in turn, reduce the number of cases of ill health linked to this pollution. However, our study -- contrary to research from places such as Wuhan in China, and Milan -- found no evidence of fine particulate air pollution declining in Scotland because of lockdown,” stated Dr. Ruaraidh Dobson, who led the study at the University of Stirling.Dr. Dobson and his group looked at the amount of fine particulate air pollution (referred to as PM2.5) in the first month of lockdown restrictions in Scotland. There was a 65 percent reduction in the number of vehicles on the roads, however there was little change in the levels of particulates.Looking at particles in the air between mid-March and mi-April of this year, then comparing that data to the same time period over the last few years, the researchers found little change in the amount of air pollution. They did notice a drop in nitrogen dioxide in 2020 samples, a compound specifically linked to car emissions.The team suggests traffic is not a key contributor to outdoor air pollution, and people may possibly be at greater risk of air pollution in their own homes from smoking and cooking appliances in small, enclosed, and poorly ventilated homes.“This could increase adverse health effects overall and also health inequalities – lower income people are more likely to smoke and to smoke indoors, and are likely to have smaller homes leading to higher PM2.5 concentrations from individual sources, due to smaller room volumes,” the study notes.The researchers express concern that if the severity of COVID-19 is related to air pollution exposure and respiratory issues, increased exposure to all sources of air pollution could increase the risk of serious complications from the disease. 2175

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- A homeless man used what little he has to give a selfless gift during a toy drive at a Colorado Walmart.Glen McCarthy walked to Walmart and got a cup of coffee. He was touched by the toy drive that was going on. He ended up buying a Barbie and a Hot Wheels set, but he couldn't stop thinking about a bike he saw."And I looked at that bike, and the bike was marked , but the tag underneath it said ," said McCarthy.It's not a lot of money for some, but for McCarthy, it was nearly everything. He went back to the hotel where he was staying and paid for another night. Back at the hotel, he still couldn't stop thinking about the bike.He walked back to Walmart and asked about the bike since the tag listed two different prices. Once a clerk realized what he was doing, she told him that he could have the bike for ."Another big reason I got to thinking, this is probably going to be my last Christmas. I'm no one, make some little kid happy," said McCarthy.McCarthy has always loved Christmas, and he realizes his time is running out. Doctors recently told him that his cancer is terminal, he has less than a year to live. "It took my losing everything to realize that I'm happier now struggling for everything in my life than I had when I had big money," said McCarthy.Despite being sick and homeless, he continues to volunteer at Senior Support Services in Denver. Staff at the center weren't surprised to hear what McCarthy did at Walmart."Totally sounded like Glen, yeah totally. So it's just amazing, he just has a real caring heart and willing to help people," said Julie Romero, Day Center Manager at Senior Support Services.In this season of giving, McCarthy knows it's about the joy that comes with making someone's day a little brighter. Federal judges have ruled that President Trump’s order to exclude people in the country illegally when redrawing congressional districts violates the law. A panel of three federal judges in New York on Thursday granted an injunction stopping the order, saying the harm caused by it would last for a decade. ENCINITAS (KGTV and CNS) - A body was found in a creek bed near Moonlight State Beach Monday. A passer-by spotted the dead person behind the tennis courts at Cotton Wood Creek near the intersection of Second and West B streets in Encinitas about 9:30 a.m., according to sheriff's officials. The deceased was described only as a while male, investigators said.Deputies searched the area and found no initial signs of injury or foul play.The Medical Examiner's Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death, and notify the family. 565
