CHICAGO, Ill. – The shopping frenzy at the outset of the pandemic gave many Americans their first taste of what it’s like to not have access to basic necessities. But it’s a reality that communities of color have faced for decades.A chance errand to Chicago’s west side taught entrepreneur Liz Abunaw that access to groceries, fresh fruits and vegetables was a luxury.“I'm on a commercial corridor in a Black neighborhood and none of this stuff is readily available and it didn't sit right with me,” said Abunaw.The New York native and business school graduate decided to do something about it. She started a social enterprise to bring fresh produce to the neighborhood.“When I was thinking of a name for this business, I wanted something that was distinctly rooted in Black culture,” said Abunaw.Forty Acres Fresh Market is a reference to Special Field Orders No. 15. Issued by General William T. Sherman in 1865, it promised 40 acres of land and mules for freed slaves to settle land in South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. It was revoked months later by President Andrew Johnson.“It's a cruel irony that the descendants of this country's first farmers now live in neighborhoods where they can get nothing from the earth,” she said.While more than 23 million Americans live in so-called "food deserts," researchers say food inequity disproportionately affects communities of color.“What I see is this unequal food system in this country,” said Abunaw. “I started calling it by what it is. It's food apartheid.”Originally, Abunaw started with pop-up markets and a plan to go brick and mortar. But the pandemic shifted operations. Home deliveries have more than tripled.“One thing the pandemic did was it made everybody realize what it could be like to live with food insecurity even if you're more affluent,” said Abunaw.Each day, warehouse supervisor Tracy Smith goes through the online orders, selecting and hand packing fruits and vegetables for what they call a "mix-it-up bag."“I just went through the line and picked what I thought went together,” said Smith.A recipe card helps consumers decide how to cook the fresh produce.For now, Abunaw is focused on continuing to scale up as she chips away at food inequity, one neighborhood at a time.“The consumers here deserve goods and services that are of high quality. I think that they deserve to have their dollars respected and that's what we do.” 2415

(KGTV) - As the City of Chula Vista prepares to license legal recreational marijuana sales, law enforcement and a handful of other agencies are cracking down on illegal pot shops.In the last three years, they've shut down 44 of them. The city's cannabis information page on its website also lists a handful of locations that are currently facing lawsuits or other "enforcement actions."City officials say they're trying to make sure that when recreational marijuana sales become legal, only licensed stores are selling."That's our goal," says Deputy City Manager Kelley Bacon. "Our goal is to get 100% of the illegal operations shut down, and that's what we're working towards."The city has used a combination of zoning laws, fire inspections and other unspecified methods to shut down illegal shops. Recently, a SWAT raid at 1274 Third Avenue helped close a store operating on what some people have nicknamed the "green mile" because of a prevalence of marijuana-related businesses.Business owners in the neighborhood say they were glad to see the city take action."It was bad for us," says Paolo Passuello, who works at Ted's Garage on Third. "We'd come in the morning, and our driveway would be flooded with joints and little containers that the pot comes in. We're glad the city stepped in and did what they did."After the passage of Proposition 64 in 2016, which legalized recreational marijuana sales in California, individual cities had the discretion to decide how and when they'd allow it. Chula Vista chose to wait a few years and research what other cities and states did. They talked with people from across California, Colorado and other places to see what worked."We learned that you need to take it slow," says Bacon. "You need to make sure you write good, tight regulations and ordinances."In November of 2018, voters passed a city sales tax that allowed Chula Vista to start the process of licensing shops. The city plans to allow 12 shops total, 3 in each City Council district. Also, they'll only allow 2 of those shops to have store-fronts. They will also allow ten indoor cultivation businesses, which will be limited to 20,000 square feet each.The application process for those licenses will start sometime in January. A specific date will be posted on the city's website (see link above). Applicants will only have five days to submit an online application.Bacon says anyone who has already been known to operate an illegal shop will not be eligible to apply for a legal license.Even after the new, legal stores open, Bacon says the city will still target illegal shops."It's a little bit like whack-a-mole," she says. "You close one down and sometimes by the end of the day they've opened up in a different location."The city also has plans to start a criminal prosecution unit within the City Attorney's office explicitly targeting illegal shops and their owners. 2916

(KGTV) -- A man was arrested early Wednesday morning after police said he broke into a Chula Vista woman's home and took a shower.At around 4:30 a.m., a resident called 911 to report a stranger in her home using her shower, prompting her to flee. She said the man she did not know somehow entered her home as she slept.When officers arrived at the home on Orange Avenue, they called on the man to come out of the house, but he refused to leave and locked himself inside the bathroom.After about an hour, officers entered the house through a window and were able to take the man into custody.The unidentified man was taken to jail, but there is no immediate word on what charges he faces. 715

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Pastor Art Hodges stood on the steps of Chula Vista City Hall Wednesday, surrounded by about 50 people of faith. "Hear our prayer. Forgive our sin," Hodges said during the group prayer.The people were rallying against a program that calls for drag queens to read to children. Drag Queen Story Hour is scheduled to start Tuesday at the Chula Vista Civic Center Library. At the rally, those opposing the program said it would harm a child's growth and development. They also demanded public hearings."If there are parents that want drag queens to come read books to their children, they have that right. They're the parents, we're not protesting their right," said Hodges. "But they should do that privately, on their own time, in their own place, on their own dollar."Supporters say the program promotes tolerance and acceptance. Chula Vista Mayor Mary Salas called it "preposterous" to have a City Council vote for a one-hour reading program, which she said would not be canceled. "The City of Chula Vista is proud to celebrate the diversity of our community in all of our programs," Salas said in a statement. "The purpose of this event is to encourage children to use their imagination and creativity and most importantly to read."The tone of Wednesday's rally was much different than one held last week, in which tempers flared from the start. This time, only a handful of Drag Queen Story Hour supporters watched the rally from the side. Supporter Shelley Rudd, a retired teacher, said the drag queen reading program benefits children. "I think that it really helps those children who may be questioning, an opportunity to see that there are options and that it's okay," Rudd said. Last week, a different rally organized by a group called Mass Resistance got heated, with police stepping between both sides on two separate occasions. CHULA VISTA (KGTV) -- The South Bay community is mourning the sudden loss of a beloved Olympian High School teacher.Vanessa Sholty’s family said she suffered a stroke on Friday and passed away Sunday. She was only 39-years-old.Sholty’s sister, Rebecca Webb, spoke about her love for teaching dance and her love for children. “She’s been dancing for her whole life. She loves to dance and teach the kids to dance,” Webb said.Sholty taught dance and physical education at Olympian High School in Chula Vista. With distance learning and COVID-19 protocols, Sholty — like the other teachers — made adjustments.“She set up her whole living room like a dance studio,” Webb said.Sholty leaves behind her husband and two young children. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the family with costs.“We were not prepared for any of this,” Sholty said. “I walk into her house and I see all her school stuff still there because she had she was working that day… it's just some major shock for us all.”Webb said support from the community, including messages from students and fellow staff members, is helping them keep strong.“Her passing has deeply affected us all,” said a post on the Olympian High School Facebook page. “We have grief counselors available for anyone wishing to talk about this tragic event. These counselors will be available the remainder of the week and as needed in the future."“Hearing their stories of what a great teacher she was, it makes us proud of her to know… she cared so much about everybody around her,” Webb said. 1546
