(KGTV) — Encinitas leaders will consider developing a parking lot for the homeless next week, but the idea is already receiving pushback.If approved, the parking lot would be the first for homeless use in North County and modeled after other similar lots in San Diego.The location, at the Leichtag Commons agricultural property on Saxony Road, would be operated by Jewish Family Services. Some locals have already submitted letters to Encinitas City Council against the idea: "While a homeless parking lot may sound like a compassionate idea, it will be problematic for the area," wrote one resident."I am not opposed to helping, I am opposed to the location," said another, citing safety concerns."I wonder who is going to pay for the added police patrol/protection when this upscale neighborhood becomes a hep-c ghetto like parts of downtown San Diego," wrote another resident."There's something a bit crazy about allowing homeless people to live in one of the most desirable towns in the world for free, no strings attached," another local wrote.Much of the money to be used for the program comes from a state grant. Hopkins added that the grant includes money for security, but other lots have had minimal problems."We hope when City Council gets together, they'll understand the urgency of families and individuals living in cars," Hopkins said.Encinitas' leaders will hold their first vote on the plan Wednesday. 2130

(KGTV) - An Encinitas man is trying to drum up some comfort amid the coronavirus pandemic by making some noise.Every night at 8 p.m., across the town of Windsor Locks, CT, the sound of bells of all sizes cuts through the quiet isolation. The town is the hometown of Encinitas resident of Rob LaBreche."It shows the neighbors are thinking about each other, and that is a positive thing," said LaBreche.Labreche decided to try to ring in some positivity in his own neighborhood. He posted his plans on the Nextdoor app and early this week, he and his kids got out some pots and pans at 7 p.m. and started making noise.That night, about five other neighbors joined them."To be honest, I kind of felt silly out there banging the pots and pans, but then when you're silent and feel other neighbors doing the same thing ... it makes you feel good and you know we're all in this together," said LaBreche.Since then, the idea has continued to resonate. He sent us video of his son ringing one of the family's newly-bought bells. On Thursday night - based on messages on Nextdoor - LaBreche believes more than 75 others joined in. LaBreche says the appointment noise making now stretches across several neighborhoods in Encinitas, and even into Carlsbad."Just like the coronavirus multiplying in a negative way, I think we can multiply things in a positive way. (CNS) - A 53-year-old Fallbrook man was fatally struck by a car while attempting to cross a street in Fallbrook, authorities reported Monday.A 58-year-old man was driving a Toyota Camry northbound on South Mission Road about 12:15 a.m. Sunday when the victim ran westbound across the northbound lanes near Peppertree Lane and was struck by the sedan, California Highway Patrol Officer Mark Latulippe said.The pedestrian was taken to Temecula Valley Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the officer said. The victim's name was withheld pending family notification.The Toyota driver remained at the scene and intoxication was not a factor in the crash, Latulippe said. 695

ESCONDIDO, Cali. (KGTV) — A recently released video shows two burglars forcing their way into a hospice care nonprofit in Escondido.Jan Jones heads The Elizabeth Hospice. Its corporate offices sit on the third floor of an office building in the 500 block of La Terraza Blvd.  One day in July around 4 a.m., two people were recorded on surveillance video sneaking into the parking garage. Minutes later, they're at the main door of the nonprofit. One of the men tries the handle, but can't get in. Then they move onto another secure door, which requires a badge to open.Moments later, from a camera on the inside of the offices, the door is seen being yanked on over and over, before two men forced their way in.MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhoodOne is wearing a hoodie. The other man is sporting a cap and a large backpack. They are seen going from room to room, raiding desks and shelves, and grabbing electronics. Then they split up and make their way out.  Among the items stolen are three laptops."No patient data, but they are used to provide the services we provide," said Jones.Also gone: A pricey camera used to make videos for critical training sessions."We care for people who are seriously ill, and we care for their families, and so anybody doing that would be heartless and should be brought to task. I think whoever did that has no soul," said Jones.The door the men damaged has been replaced by the landlord. The other damage is harder to undo. ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- A homeless man used what little he has to give a selfless gift during a toy drive at a Colorado Walmart.Glen McCarthy walked to Walmart and got a cup of coffee. He was touched by the toy drive that was going on. He ended up buying a Barbie and a Hot Wheels set, but he couldn't stop thinking about a bike he saw."And I looked at that bike, and the bike was marked , but the tag underneath it said ," said McCarthy.It's not a lot of money for some, but for McCarthy, it was nearly everything. He went back to the hotel where he was staying and paid for another night. Back at the hotel, he still couldn't stop thinking about the bike.He walked back to Walmart and asked about the bike since the tag listed two different prices. Once a clerk realized what he was doing, she told him that he could have the bike for ."Another big reason I got to thinking, this is probably going to be my last Christmas. I'm no one, make some little kid happy," said McCarthy.McCarthy has always loved Christmas, and he realizes his time is running out. Doctors recently told him that his cancer is terminal, he has less than a year to live. "It took my losing everything to realize that I'm happier now struggling for everything in my life than I had when I had big money," said McCarthy.Despite being sick and homeless, he continues to volunteer at Senior Support Services in Denver. Staff at the center weren't surprised to hear what McCarthy did at Walmart."Totally sounded like Glen, yeah totally. So it's just amazing, he just has a real caring heart and willing to help people," said Julie Romero, Day Center Manager at Senior Support Services.In this season of giving, McCarthy knows it's about the joy that comes with making someone's day a little brighter.
