BEIJING, April 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said here on Friday that he hoped China and the European Union (EU) would enhance its dialogue and consultation to ensure the healthy and stable development of the China-EU all-round strategic partnership.     Hu made the remarks in a meeting with EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso.     He said it was not only in line with both sides' fundamental interests, but also conducive to the peace, stability and development of the world to further cement and step up China-EU ties under current circumstances. BEIJING, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and his Australian counterpart Kevin Rudd, in a phone conversation on Monday, exchanged opinions on relations between their two countries as well as the international financial crisis and climate change.     Wen spoke positively of the development of the mutually beneficial cooperation between China and Australia.     He said China is willing to work with Australia to intensify coordination and cooperation, and meet the complicated global challenges in a bid to promote harmonious and sustainable development of the world.     The Australian prime minister lauded China's position and active role in handling the international financial crisis.     Rudd said the international community should strengthen cooperation to establish and improve the mechanism to guarantee the transparency and consistency of the international financial system.     Australia would like to work with China to reinforce exchanges and cooperation in international finance and in multilateral and bilateral fields, he added.

LHASA, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake followed by some 1,000 aftershocks has affected more than 60,000 people in the Tibet Autonomous Region this week, the local government said in a news conference Saturday.     Since Monday's 6.6-magnitude quake struck Damxung County in Lhasa, more than 1,000 aftershocks have been monitored, including one that measured 5.4 on the Richter scale, said Gong Puguang, vice president of the regional government.     61,231 people in the region's capital have been affected and 989 houses collapsed, said Gong.     More than 4,800 people have been relocated out of the quake zone.     The quake-hit areas include Lhasa, Xigaze and Shannan regions, where 28 km of road and 11 bridges were damaged.     So far, ten people have been confirmed dead. 54 others sustained injuries, one third of those injuries are serious.     The central government allocated 10 million yuan (1.46 million U.S. dollars), 11,000 tents, quilts, and other quake relief materials to the affected area.     The items were being distributed as traffic and telecommunication resumed in the area.     The local government is evaluating economic losses from the disaster.     Seismologists predict more aftershocks will hit the county but the force is unlikely to exceed 5.5 on the Richter scale. A doctor from the General Hospital of Tibet's Area Command of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) takes a medical examination for a resident suffered from earthquake in Yangyi Village of Gedar Township in Damxung County, an outer county of Lhasa, southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, Oct. 10, 2008. SINGAPORE, July 23 (Xinhua) -- The first informal meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the Six-Party Talks on the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue concluded here on Wednesday with "very meaningful results", Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said.     In a news briefing after the close-door talks on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Ministerial Meeting, Yang said that the Six-Party Talks have "very meaningful results", adding that they exchanged views and deepened understanding and expressed the will of continued pushing forward the Six-Party Talks further.     Yang said, "with joint efforts, the six parties agreed that the initial success has been achieved" and the informal talks "made useful preparation for the formal Six-Party Ministerial Talks in early day".     The Chinese foreign minister said the six parties reaffirmed they will earnestly fulfill their commitment to the signed joint statements and related documents.     Yang said all agreed the Six-Party Talks are an important platform for exchanging views and enhancing understanding, adding that the six parties should continue to enhance their exchanges so as to "achieve mutual benefit and win-win progress". Chief delegates of the six-party talks on the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue ended talks on July 12, agreeing to establish a verification mechanism for denuclearization.

BEIJING, April 19 (Xinhua) -- The All-China Journalists Association (ACJA) on Saturday asked U.S.-based. news network CNN and its commentator Jack Cafferty to apologize for his remarks regarding China.     In an interview with Chinese media including Xinhua News Agency, a senior official with the ACJA strongly condemned Cafferty for his "insulting" words in a TV show on April 9 and asked him and CNN to make a formal apology to all Chinese as soon as possible.     Cafferty said in the TV show that Chinese products were "junk" and China was "basically the same bunch of goons and thugs they've been for the last 50 years" when the Olympic torch relay was going on in San Francisco.     Since the Lhasa violence on March 14, some foreign media including CNN had made a number of biased reports about the incident, the official said.     CNN had violated the principle of objective reporting, and "this is not what responsible media should do," he said.     "And Cafferty also disregarded a journalist's professional ethics to attack a country with insulting words," the official said.     Despite having an effective mechanism to deal with false reporting, CNN issued a statement on its website six days after Cafferty's remarks, which not only pleaded for him, but also spearheaded its attack on the Chinese government, he said.     CNN issued a statement on Tuesday saying, "It was not Mr. Cafferty's nor CNN's intent to cause offence to the Chinese people, and CNN would apologize to anyone who has interpreted the comments in this way."     But, the statement said that Cafferty was offering his "strongly held" opinion of the Chinese government, not China's people.     "We hope CNN and Cafferty to realize that they have harmed the feelings of Chinese and apologize with a rational and responsible attitude," the official said.     With the Olympic Games drawing near, the ACJA welcomed all foreign media to cover the event in an objective and balanced way, he said.
