TUCSON, Ariz. — Lute Olson, a legendary University of Arizona basketball coach who led to the Wildcats to the winningest streak in their history, has died at the age of 85, his family says.Lute Olson was the soul of Tucson. Revered by the community, regarded as one of college basketball's greatest coaches of all-time, Olson brought a sense of pride to Arizona’s basketball program, and to southern Arizona.He led the Wildcats to four final four appearances including a national championship, and an amazing 23 consecutive NCAA tournament appearances.Yet the legendary Arizona wildcat basketball coach didn't arrive in Tucson until he was close to fifty years old.Olson was born in North Dakota and began his career coaching high school teams, first in Minnesota, then in California.Olson taught his teams to want more - to reach for a dream - and drive for perfection. He compiled a 24-2 record in his only season at Long Beach State.That was followed by the University of Iowa, where he led the Hawkeyes to the 1980 Final Four.Three years later, Olson surprised the college basketball world, leaving the Big Ten power for an Arizona Wildcat program coming off a 4-24 season.Olson made a bold statement, advising fans in April of 1983 that they should get their tickets now.Just two years later, Arizona was a winner.Olson turned down other college opportunities, saying that Tucson was his home. He would also decline offers from the NBA.“I love coaching college guys because you can just see them grow from kids to young men before they move on,” he said in a 2016 interview.His first Wildcat Final four team came in 1988. It was a beloved group made up of not just basketball stars, but those who would be successful in other walks of life – including record producer Harvey Mason, baseball great Kenny Lofton and of course, Steve Kerr. 1849

Two days after President Donald Trump’s visit to the city, Democratic nominee Joe Biden met with members of Jacob Blake’s family on Thursday before hosting a community discussion on race.Ben Crump, a civil rights attorney who is representing the Blake family, said that the former vice president met with Blake's family for nearly 90 minutes. Blake joined for part of the conversation via telephone from his hospital bed, both Crump and Biden confirmed.“The family was grateful for the meeting and was very impressed that the Bidens were so engaged and willing to really listen,” Crump said. “Jacob's mother led them all in prayer for Jacob's recovery. They talked about changing the disparate treatment of minorities in police interactions, the impact of selecting Kamala Harris as a Black woman as his running mate. and Vice President Biden's plans for change. Mr. Blake Sr. talked about the need for systemic reform because the excessive use of force by police against minorities has been going on for far too long.”Biden said that Jacob Blake told him “nothing is going to defeat” him."I had an opportunity to spend some time with Jacob [Blake] on the phone. He's out of ICU. We spoke for about 15 minutes. His brother and two sisters, his dad and his mom on the telephone," Biden said.Blake was shot seven times in the back by Officer Rusten Sheskey last month. Sheskey has been placed on administrative leave per police policy.While Sheskey has not been charged with a crime, Biden said earlier this week that charges should be filed.“I do think there's a minimum need to be charged,” Biden said, also adding that the Louisville, Kentucky, officers involved in the death of Breonna Taylor should also be criminally charged.Biden told Kenosha community members that fighting for racial equality “is something worth losing over." Tyson Foods may lay off more than 400 workers in the South Bay in an effort to become more efficient and save money.It would be the biggest layoff in San Diego County in more than a year.The company filed a layoff notice with the state this month saying it had to let 401 workers go from its Circle Foods label plant in Otay Mesa. "Tyson Foods, Inc. regrets that its team members at the San Diego, California facility must be permanently displaced yet hopes to accomplish this plant closing with the least possible disruption of lives of the tema members, their families, and the community," the notice says.Many of the workers make Mexican frozen food on the factory's assemblyline.A team from the San Diego Workforce Partnership has already been to the factory twice to help the workers find new opportunities. Also, Windsor Foods is buying Tyson's plant to expand its Mexican frozen food offerings. While it does plan to eliminate three tortilla lines, company VIce President Paul Taylor said the Windsor hopes to keep as many of the workers as possible.Andy Hall, chief operating officer of the San Diego Workforce Partnership, said he doesn't see the layoffs as a larger trend. After all, the unemployment rate is now near a 17-year-low of 3.3 percent. The layoffs are expected to occur by the end of April. Tyson in a statement said it is working on a transition plan with Windsor Foods, but will retain some operations here. Two new fissures opened on Hawaii's Big Island, spewing lava and fueling fears of violent explosions more than a week after the Kilauea volcano erupted.Nearly 2,000 people have been evacuated since the Kilauea volcano erupted May 3, sending lava flowing into communities and threatening a nearby geothermal plant.The 17th fissure, a crack on the ground through which lava pours out, was reported Saturday night, the US Geological Survey's Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said."Lava from this latest outbreak is actively spattering," it said.The volcanic vents, or fissures, have released slow-moving lava and toxic gas into island communities, gobbling up dozens of homes and vehicles.Another fissure, the 16th one, was reported earlier Saturday and "produced a lava flow that traveled about 250 yards before stalling," officials said.That vent was about a mile east of the Puna Geothermal Venture plant, where officials removed 60,000 gallons of flammable liquids due to safety concerns.In addition to the new fissures, USGS officials said an explosive eruption is possible at Halemaumau crater at the top of the Kilauea volcano. Such an eruption could generate ash plumes over an area 12 miles from the summit crater, the HOV said. 1238
