SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Businesses in the Gaslamp District were evacuated Saturday due to a natural gas leak. San Diego Fire crews evacuated several business in the area of Fifth Avenue and E Street in the heart of the Gaslamp District. All streets within a one block radius, from F St. to Broadway and Fourth Ave. to Sixth Ave., have been blocked off. Police are asking pedestrians and drivers to avoid the area.No injuries were reported. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - California gubernatorial candidate Gavin Newsom hosted a roundtable discussion at Grossmont College in El Cajon Wednesday, discussing the state’s ongoing housing crisis and other affordability issues Californians continue to face.On housing, Newsom said California's housing crisis revolves around affordability. He said the state is averaging 100,000 units statewide per year, but to reach an affordability equilibrium 400,000 a year is needed."We're 49th out of 50 in per capita housing units. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Caltrans is warning drivers about a series of SR-163 closures throughout the week. According to the agency, all lanes of north and southbound SR-163 between I-8 and Genesee Avenue for three to six nights. The highway will be closed so crews can remove falsework from the bridge on the SR-163 Friars Road overcrossing. The southbound closures will begin at 11 p.m. with the northbound closures starting at 11:30 p.m. All lanes will reopen at 5 a.m. The list below shows which lanes will be closed on certain nights: Sunday: All southbound lanes, the northbound far right collector lane and the right main lane (slow lane).Monday: No full freeway closure. Only the northbound and southbound right main lanes.Tuesday: All southbound lanes, and the northbound left lane (fast lane).Wednesday: All northbound lanes, and the southbound left lane.Thursday: No full freeway closures. Only the northbound right lane.Friday/Saturday: No freeway work scheduledSunday, March 10: All northbound lanes. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Caltrans is starting a yearlong pilot program in San Diego to reduce wrong-way driving.The agency has installed markings at 30 locations that include red arrows and "DO NOT ENTER" written across the pavement that are only legible when driving in the wrong direction onto freeway ramps.The markings will stay up until the end of the year, according to Caltrans.The agency says that a previous three-year pilot program helped reduce wrong-way driving by 44% in San Diego. The program utilized special reflectors, sensors, and illuminated signs in early 2018.Now, those specialized reflectors have been installed on hundreds of miles of highways, according to Caltrans."The number of wrong-way drivers decreased significantly during the initial pilot program," said Caltrans Director Toks Omishakin. "The addition of these markings, along with what we have learned thus far, will go a long way as we continue to study ways to deter wrong-way drivers."While wrong-way crashes only account for less than 1% of all crashes on California's highways, they are often among the deadliest, Caltrans said."We are constantly looking for ways to improve safety on the transportation system," said Caltrans (San Diego area) District 11 Director Gustavo Dallarda. "If the testing of this new product is successful, it could provide a new tool to reduce wrong-way driving." 1383

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- As rain continues to soak California, the state is almost entirely out of a drought. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor's most recent report out Thursday, the only part of the state still experiencing any form of drought is a portion of extreme Northern California. As seen in the image below, those counties are only in a "moderate drought," the lowest level in the rating system.
