KANSAS CITY, Mo. - When you think of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, a polling place probably doesn't come to mind.However, maintaining the security of our elections is a major function of the agency."One of the most important things we do is to protect citizens' constitutional right to vote," C.J. Sanders, an FBI Supervisory Special Agent, said.The FBI accomplishes this by working with the Department of Homeland Security, the United States Postal Inspection Service, secretaries of state and local election officials.According to Sanders, the FBI will set up command posts in Kansas City, Jefferson City, and Topeka to respond to any allegations of voter fraud.It's the same set up the agency has utilized in previous elections, and Sanders emphasized voters should have confidence in the system, even if more people are voting by mail this time around."There's not much different this year than we've had in years past," he said, "We've always had mail-in ballots and voting in person with the machines."According to experts at the Brennan Center for Justice, a nonpartisan policy group at New York University, 25 percent of all votes were cast by mail in the last two federal elections."Mail ballots are paper ballots. That means we do have an opportunity to audit all of those ballots," Lawrence Norden, Director of the Brennan Center's Election Reform Program, said.As always, the FBI will investigate reports of voter fraud, like multiple voting, false registration and stolen mail-in ballots.Sanders said there were some fraud reports in 2016 and 2018, but none were prosecuted federally.One of the biggest election concerns for the FBI actually originates outside our country."In years past obviously we've seen other countries try to influence voters through misinformation, trying to sow discord and undermine confidence in government," Sanders said.About a year ago the agency created an internal task force comprised of counter-terrorism, counter-intelligence, criminal and cyber experts who routinely meet to share information about foreign influence.The agency notifies Twitter and Facebook when threats, like bots spreading misinformation, are identified.Examples of the misinformation include telling voters they can vote online or by text, which are not options for casting a ballot.It's important to note that the following are not instances that should be reported to the FBI:Candidates campaigning too close to the polls. (AP) — Mississippi's largest religious group says state lawmakers have a moral obligation to remove the Confederate battle emblem from the state flag because many people are "hurt and shamed" by the symbol. The Mississippi Baptist Convention has more than 500,000 members in a state of 3 million people. The convention said Tuesday that many see the flag as "a relic of racism and a symbol of hatred."It joins the other influential groups, including the governing body for college athletics, that are calling for Mississippi to change its flag. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Missouri Gov. Mike Parson announced changes Thursday in guidance for how teachers, staff and students will be classified in possible exposures to a COVID-19 case.During his weekly remarks, Parson acknowledged the recent spike in cases in the state has placed strain on schools, and after working with officials at the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and the Missouri Department of Health and Services, released guidance that clears the way for those in close contact to a COVID-19 case can continue to report to school.The new guidance for schools states that, in schools with mask mandates, appropriately wearing a mask can now prevent individuals from being identified as a close contact and those individuals can continue going to school if they do not show symptoms of COVID-19.The governor cited low transmission seen in schools across the state when proper COVID-19 protocols are in place and advice from a leading pediatric infectious disease researcher at Washington University and St. Louis Children's Hospital, Dr. Rachel Orscheln.Orscheln said that social distancing, cohorting, hand sanitation practices and mask-wearing are helping prevent transmission of COVID-19 in schools and that the experts will continue to monitor and adapt advice.Dr. Margie Vandeven, the state education commissioner, said that the amount of students and staff having to quarantine because of being considered in close contact with COVID-19 is causing staffing issues in schools. JAMUL, Calif. (KGTV) -- A man was arrested Tuesday morning after reportedly stabbing a San Diego County Sheriff’s Department K-9 and spraying deputies with bear spray. Deputies were called to the 15000 block of Skyline Truck Trail in Jamul around 10 a.m. Tuesday after receiving reports of a man walking around a vehicle talking to himself. When deputies arrived, they made contact with the man, identified as Richard Lechuga, 29, of San Diego, sitting in a vehicle. When deputies approached Lechuga, he reportedly sprayed three of them with bear spray through an open window. Deputies say Lechuga then brandished what appeared to be a knife and a handgun and stabbed a K-9 in the head and face. Deputies were able to take Lechuga into custody after using less-lethal shotgun rounds, pepper balls and a Taser. The K-9 was taken to a local veterinarian for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. The deputies were also treated on scene and Lechuga was taken to the hospital for treatment. Lechuga was arrested for felony assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, assaulting a police animal and resisting arrest.
