CAPE CORAL, Fla. - It all started with a high school assignment.Megan O’Grady says she had to write about a topic that she felt passionate about in her life.As the daughter of a law enforcement officer who had recently learned of the deaths of five officers during a 2016 protest in Dallas, it wasn’t hard for her to share what she was feeling at the time.That paper would soon turn into a passion project and the nonprofit, Blue Line Bears.Four years later, the group has dispersed more than 700 teddy bears - sewn with the uniforms of fallen law enforcement officers and given to loved ones that have been left behind.“Taking that uniform shirt and making it into something that can be held and cuddled...it gives them comfort and a little bit of their loved one back,” the 18-year-old tells FOX 4.She says prior to this year, Blue Line Bears filled five to ten requests per week from agencies across the country.“Now, it can be up to like 20 or 30”.Megan’s father is Master Sergeant Patrick O’Grady with the Cape Coral Police Department.He says agencies from all over reach out to the group for bears.O’Grady says they also use the website Officer Down Memorial Page to keep track of impacted families.According to the site, there was 148 line of duty deaths in 2019.This year and at the time of this story, the website reports that the number is already 247.The site says most of those deaths are related to COVID-19 and gunfire.“At any time, we can have over 100 shirts waiting to be turned into bears,” O’Grady says.With an increase in demand comes the need for an increase in space.That’s why the nonprofit is now expanding to an official location in Cape Coral.Megan says the new space will serve as a place to hold meetings and a go-to location for the community to purchases merchandise.She says she's most excited that it will also provide a bigger workspace to prepare the keepsakes that bring support to many families.Because as Megan, now in her first year of college, says, “There’s always a lot of bears to be made.”The O'Gradys say the new location will be complete by the end of the year.The address for the new storefront is 3032 Santa Barbara Boulevard.Click here for more information about Blue Line Bears.This story was first reported by Shari Armstrong at WFTX in Fort Myers, Florida. 2315

Cameras capture history. That’s what Marc Tasman loves about them. He teaches photojournalism at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.“The history of photography is the history of social change that was brought about through the use of the camera,” said Tasman.In the United States, cameras have captured great historic moments, as well as moments of shame.“Think about the civil rights movement. You think about, you know what we were talking about before: Rodney King, Michael Brown, Eric Garner, most recently Jacob Blake,” said Tasman.Jacob Blake was shot seven times in the back by police in Kenosha, Wisconsin, in August. The shooting sparked protests in Kenosha and added Blake to a list of Black Americans who’ve suffered police violence caught on camera.The most infamous of 2020 was a Minneapolis police officer kneeling on the neck of George Floyd, who later died.“We’re living in a society where everybody has, has that camera and anybody can, not only take a picture, but it’s a device to transmit and share that,” Tasman said.Almost everyone has a cellphone with a high-powered camera that takes photos and videos. That impact has been felt everywhere, particularly on police officers and departments.“Capturing it on video has really brought these events into people’s homes,” said Paul Taylor, a professor at CU Denver.He focuses much of his research on bad outcomes between police and citizens, and solutions. He’s not sure cameras are the solution to police reform.“A lot of the police reform efforts have been focused on transparency, and body cameras have been a part of that, and accountability,”Taylor says while things like body cameras provide transparency and accountability they only show us outcomes.“These are surface level fixes that really don’t get at the systemic issues,” said Taylor.He suggests increasing police training time by a significant amount. In many places it only takes six months of training to become a cop.However while cameras may not stop cops from using deadly force, they allow the public to hold officers accountable. In the case of Floyd and Blake, if someone hadn’t been filming, the world may never have known what happened to them.If you ask Tasman, that shows how powerful cameras really can be.“The camera is a shield, but only if people, only if there’s some consequence.” 2341

California Democrat Gil Cisneros has defeated Republican Young Kim in a closely watched House race, adding yet another blue seat to the party's new House majority.Cisneros, a former Navy officer, will represent California's racially diverse 39th Congressional District, which was previously held by retiring Republican Rep. Canada is the latest country to approve a COVID-19 vaccine candidate made by Pfizer and BioNTech, according to ABC News and the Washington Post.On Monday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that the vaccine would arrive in Canada next week and that doses would be distributed at that time.The FDA is expected to meet tomorrow to discuss granting Emergency Use Authorization to the Pfizer vaccine. Approval is expected, and Americans may begin receiving doses as soon as next week.The drug has already been administered to some patients in the United Kingdom, who approved the vaccine for emergency use last week. On Wednesday, officials announced that two people with extensive histories with allergies had suffered "adverse effects" from the injections, but both patients are expected to be OK. Officials in the U.K. are now advising patients with similar histories of extreme allergic reactions to not get vaccinated for the time being.Initial efficacy studies showed the Pfizer vaccine to be 95% effective in preventing COVID-19, without serious side effects.A vaccine candidate made by Moderna is also on the precipice of receiving widespread approval from several major western countries. 1206
