Millennials often get a bad reputation. A few people characterize them as being lazy, not loyal, and addicted to technology. But a recent study shows those same employees are actually changing the workforce for the better.It boils down to millennials' desire for more flexibility and a better work-life balance. And they are willing to change jobs to find it. That makes employers take a closer look at what they are doing to keep and attract employees.29-year-old Christina Pinto finds herself fitting that mold. "Growing up you see your parents working 9 to 5 and being in the same job," she says.So when her first job in the travel industry wasn't exactly the right fit, she says, "it was hard quitting because I'm not a quitter but I knew if I wanted to be happy in the long run it was the right move."Given her generation, it's not uncommon.A new study shows millennials are more likely than Gen Xers and baby boomers to change jobs for a particular benefit or perk. Things like paid maternity leave and vacation, and flexible working times and locations are more likely to drive millennials to change jobs. But once they find what they are looking for, this poll shows they want the stability to stay there.In Pinto's case, it was flexibility and feeling like she was making an impact.As president of Keiser University's West Palm Beach Campus, Kimberly Lea works with millennials every day. She sees a shift in their mindset, forcing a shift in the workforce as a whole."When they talk about the millennial it's 'ugh they are not loyal,' but I don't think that's a bad thing. I think they are discerning and they want a quality relationship and quality experience. And if the experience is not a good one, they are not going to stay just because they are supposed to be loyal. That doesn't work for them," she says. The Gallup Poll conducted recently also showed millennials want benefits and perks that directly impact their lives and the lives of their family members.Lea says seeing those desires even led her to reexamine her own. "Because of the information available to millennials, they are not afraid to ask for what they want. I think it took me into maybe the last 5-10 years to say, 'Oh, I could ask for something different, I'm not going to just take what's offered to me,' " she says"It makes me reflect a little bit on my own philosophy, you don't have to stay someplace just because you've been there before or you've agreed to do that. You need to be discerning and you need to make decisions whether it is the right thing for you, whether it matches your values and I think that's very good. It makes us more reflective and makes it a better experience than going in and not being engaged," she added.Now working for Expedia Cruiseship Centers in Boca Raton, Pinto says she is happier than ever. She says, "it's really what I want. There's days when I'm busy at home, I have appointments at home so I can work from home and there are days I have clients that might be coming in so I come into work." They will be able to sell drinks to-go and deliver them until the end of 2025.“The MLBA, its members, and all 8,500 licensees throughout the state have something to be excited about today,” said Michigan Licensed Beverage Association Executive Director Scott Ellis. “We would like to thank Governor Whitmer, Senator Nesbitt, Representative Webber, and Representative Anthony for their focus and hard work for bringing these ideas to fruition in a timely manner.”The billsRaises the current 17 percent discount on spirits purchased from the state by an on-premises account to 23 percent for a 12-month period.Allows for drinks to go and the delivery of drinks by on-premises licensees until Dec. 31, 2025.Allows two-for-one pricing on drinks sold in a licensed establishment.Increases the number of spirits an on-premises account can purchase from an off-premises account from nine liters per month (108 liters per year) to 120 liters per year with no monthly cap.Creates an exception to the aid and assistance rule to allow a manufacturer to refund a wholesaler for expired products.Allows small distilleries to sell drinks to go and samples in the licensed establishments.Allows local governmental units to establish social districts with a commons area that multiple on-premises licensees can use to increase sales via permit until Dec. 31, 2024.“These bills are critical to the survival of the hospitality industry because we don’t know how long we will be operating at this reduced capacity while many bars are continuing to accrue debt and face financial hardship,” Ellis added. “Everything in this package will help businesses with their long-term recovery as we continue to transition back to normal.”Last month, the State Senate passed the package of bills 37-1 just two weeks after it was introduced.You can read the summaries below. Mental health has become a priority for many people across the country during the pandemic. For college students, it's no different, and many are hoping employers put mental health as a priority when they graduate."As they stress about whether or not they’re going to find internships, whether or not they're going to find employment after they graduate, as they think about their own families, as they think about their health or the health of their loved ones. Everything is just compounding and we wanted to get a better sense of whether students were actively thinking about mental health," said Christine Cruzvergara, the VP of Higher Education and Student Success at Handshake, which connects college students with employers.Cruzvergara says realizing these struggles, Handshake surveyed more than 1,000 college students about their mental health."Over 62% of our students want employers to think about mental health benefits as actually part of the compensation plan and I think that’s a huge shift. We didn’t see students talking about mental health as a benefit previous to COVID," said Cruzvergara.Roughly half of students surveyed said they were concerned about their own mental health with so many people working remotely, adding they were concerned about feeling isolated and about their work-life balance."We've shared this with our employers as we continue conversations with them about how they're going to adapt their training, their onboarding, their compensation," said Cruzvergara.More businesses are also thinking about mental health services for their employees, according to Gympass, a service used by employers to offer benefits like fitness and nutrition programs. Gympass surveyed its own members and found 69% have experienced burnout during the pandemic."We know 95% of people are just aware that wellness in general is more important to their productivity and as employers have become more aware of that we’re seeing the shift to mental wellness awareness, in particular, and we’ve been able to embrace this from a live classes perspective moving into digitals where yoga, people can take their meditation classes online," said Gympass CEO Marshall Porter. Porter says while most employees and employers realize mental wellness is important when it comes to productivity at work, just 34% of employers are actually offering those types of benefits."And so how do we think about and talk about meeting the customer, the employee, where they are. Everybody’s aware, everybody wants that benefit. Too few employers are still thinking about that and so opening that conversation of how are you really doing, what can we do to provide that. Maybe it isn’t that traditional 401k or new stipend to work from home and make your home office more comfortable," said Porter.Realizing the major impact companies can have on their own employees' mental health. 2884
