BEIJING, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- A total of 53.36 million Mu (about 3.56 million hectares) of crops in China had been affected by severe drought by Saturday, said the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters. The drought, mostly in China's southwestern provinces including Yunnan and Guizhou, had damaged crops and caused water shortage to both people and livestock.In Yunnan, the worst drought-stricken province, up to 31.48 million Mu of crops had been affected, with 11.53 million Mu seriously damaged and 6.16 million Mu destroyed. TAIYUAN, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- Tens of thousands of people in north China's Shanxi Province flooded onto the streets Saturday afternoon and stayed until Sunday morning after earthquake rumors spread in the coal-rich region recently hit by a 4.8-magnitude quake.Major streets, parks and squares in cities like Jinzhong, Luliang, Changzhi, Yangquan and Taiyuan filled with anxious people and private cars. In rural areas, many villagers went out in the open air with their personal property, such as TVs.The Shanxi Provincial Seismological Bureau issued an urgent statement Sunday morning, asking residents to keep calm and not to believe in the quake rumor."According to the quake forecast regulation, only the provincial government can release quake forecast information. Other organizations and individuals are not authorized to do so," the statement said.The bureau is using TV, radio, Internet and text messages to clarify the situation and calm the residents.Meanwhile, local police are investigating the incident and trying to find out the source of the rumor.On Jan. 24, a 4.8-magnitude quake struck Yuncheng City in Shanxi.

NICOSIA, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi expressed his solemn position on the U.S. arms sales to Taiwan here Saturday, urging the U.S. to stop selling weapons to the Chinese province.Yang, who is paying an official visit to Cyprus, said in disregard of strong opposition and repeated protest from China, the U.S. administration flagrantly announced its plan to sell the weapons to Taiwan worth about 6.4 billion dollars.Such a move is gravely against the three joint communiques between China and the United States, especially the "Aug. 17" communique, Yang said, adding that it constitutes crude interference in China's internal affairs, and harms China's national security and peaceful reunification efforts.China firmly opposes such a move which runs counter to the U.S. commitment to support the peaceful growth of the cross-Strait relations, he said.The Chinese foreign minister urged the U.S. side to adopt a serious attitude towards the Chinese position, earnestly respect China's core interests and major concerns, revoke immediately the erroneous decision on the arms sales to Taiwan and stop selling weapons so as not to undermine the China-U.S. relations.Yang Jiechi said China has repeatedly stated its position on the U.S. arms sales to Taiwan. BEIJING, March 1 (Xinhua) -- China's central government has allocated 28.6 billion yuan (4.2 billion U.S. dollars) to support farmers, the Ministry of Finance said in a statement Monday.The bulk of the funding -- 18.6 billion yuan -- would be used to subsidize farmers in growing improved varieties of crops such as rice, corn, and cotton.The other 10 billion yuan would subsidize purchases of farm machinery such as sowers and reapers, said the statement issued to Xinhua.The funding aimed to improve motivation in agricultural production, and stabilize the country's grain production, according to the statement.Farmers across the country would be eligible for the subsidies.The funding was on top of 86.7 billion yuan of subsidy funding to grain-growing farmers nationwide in February.The financial support for agriculture came as severe drought continued in the nation's west and south.The National Meteorological Center (NMC) issued a drought alert on Sunday warning the severe drought would continue over the next three days.The State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters said Saturday the drought, which started at the beginning of February, had affected 69.6 million mu (4.64 million hectares) of arable land and left 12.7 million people and 8.4 million heads of livestock short of drinking water.
