SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It's been more than a month since the big ship fire in San Diego Bay.The flames are out but the boat is still there.It's become a sort of "morbid tourist attraction." Contractors were disposing of chemicals on board.The Coast Guard cautioned there was no immediate leak or threat to the environment.Where did the ship come from?...10News learned the Norton Sound - which now has gaping holes in it - was originally owned by an American company in Seattle. It sailed into our bay in March.A San Diego shipping agent found it a place to dock. And then it was sold to a company in Mexico.Since the fire, a company employee has met with the Port and the Coast Guard at least once."I never did hear what was exactly in there," Moore said.No cargo was listed on the paperwork. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Jury duty service in San Diego County resumed Friday after a lengthy stoppage caused by the coronavirus pandemic.Courtrooms across San Diego County shut down about seven months ago amid state-mandated restrictions. Now, jurors are able to report once again, with a slew of health and safety precautions in place.Because of the virus, courts have had to change the way they operate, and some lawyers believe this will also affect the process of picking a fair jury.Many aspects of the courts have changed, from added safety precautions to transitioning to virtual court.Prior to the pandemic, there were usually 350-400 people that are summoned to serve as jurors at the Central Courthouse in downtown San Diego. Now, that number has been reduced to 18%-20% of the usual capacity to allow for proper social distancing.Just as before, jurors do have the option to delay their service based on a number of factors including financial reasons, being a caretaker, or having a physical or mental condition.Defense attorney Jan Ronis told ABC 10News, “The kinds of options that were previously available now have new options, in respect to vulnerable conditions and age groups, things of that nature … it’s a whole new world.”Ronis said he believes COVID-19 concerns could impact the jury pool that’s available, with more people opting to postpone their service.“A jury of your peers, which represents a cross-section of society, racially, ethnic, gender-wise, diversify, as far as age and demographic, these are hugely important,” said Ronis.It’s just one of the main challenges the courts will have to deal with as they’re already facing a backlog of cases.Ronis added, “Everyone’s been in limbo; people need to get things resolved, criminal and civil litigants and family courts, things of that nature. It’s really created a horrific situation for so many people.”Jurors that have been called in to report will do so next Tuesday, which is when jury trials are scheduled to begin.Court officials say of the jurors that were summoned this week, nearly 40% have either postponed their service or have been excused from jury duty. 2151

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In a graphic display, a former charter boat captain demonstrated Wednesday how to make the knots found on Rebecca Zahau’s body, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.Zahau was discovered bound and hanging from a balcony of the Spreckels Mansion in Coronado in 2011.While the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s office determined the death was a suicide, Zahau’s family believes she was murdered.The Zahau family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Adam Shacknai, the brother of Rebecca’s boyfriend and the only other person in the home at the time of her death.Lindsey Philpott used a lifelike mannequin covered with a white sheet to show the overhand and clove hitch knots, which, according to the U-T report, Philpott said were common for nautical uses.Shacknai works as a tugboat captain.Philpott said under cross-examination that both knots are simple and widely used, the Union-Tribune reported.The Zahau wrongful death trial, which was in its fifth day Wednesday, is expected to last four weeks. 1034

Now, a growing number of residents are saying goodbye to cable and satellite, and subscribing to more affordable streaming services. "Really for us, I just felt guilty flipping through those channels all the time because I knew we're paying for them, but at the same time if it's not Game of Thrones we're not really watching anyway," said Jason Stump, who got rid of cable about four weeks ago. Stump, who lives in La Mesa, kept his cable for years because he feared not being able to watch live sports. But everything changed when he discovered that YouTube TV offered Fox Sports San Diego, which carries the Padres, four versions of ESPN, and the local channels. The price tag? a month, down from the 0 he was paying monthly for cable.
