A second Florida city paid thousands of dollars to ransomware attackers who hacked their computer systems -- the latest in a growing trend that forces local governments offline.Officials from Lake City agreed Tuesday to pay 42 bitcoin, roughly 6,000, to hackers who seized the city's computer systems June 10, ending a 15-day standoff.It's the second city in Florida to fall prey to ransomware attackers this summer: On June 19, Riviera Beach officials voted to pay their requested ransom of 65 bitcoin, close to 0,000, to hackers who disabled the city's online services in late May.Lake City police said the city paid a ,000 deductible to its insurance company, which will cover the rest of the ransom.In a statement, the city called the attack a "triple threat," a ransomware program that attacked the city's network three different ways and took out email systems, landline phones and online credit card payment.Cyber attacks on government are growingRansomware attacks have spiked since 2016, hijacking the computer systems of government entities like cities, police departments and schools. A new Congress is about to be sworn in. Democrats are taking over the House, and Republicans are adding to their majority in the Senate. They've already got a lot on their plate. First, there's a pretty good chance we're going to enter this new session of Congress in the midst of a partial government shutdown. As of Thursday afternoon, President Trump and Democrats were standing their ground. They'll have to come to an agreement about border funding which could spill into another issue: immigration.The president is asking for billion to fund construction of a wall along the southern border. Some Democratic members are hoping likely-Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi will negotiate a deal exchanging border funding for those living in limbo under Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, and those under Temporary Protected Status. Now that Democrats have the House, many won't feel the need to give into the president's demands. House Democrats are also planning to move quickly to take up gun reform. They plan to advance several bills within the first 100 days. Most notably, Democratic Rep. Mike Thompson plans to introduce a bipartisan bill mandating universal background checks on all gun sales. Some GOP House members have already voiced support. Still, the Republican Senate likely won't pass any high-profile gun control bills. But given the shootings in Pittsburgh, Parkland, Santa Fe and Thousand Oaks in 2018, Democrats feel public momentum is on their side. Health care may be a place to find some common ground in 2019. Democrats and Republicans have said they're interested in looking at prescription drug prices. That's probably where the harmony will end. Republicans still want to gut the Affordable Care Act as Democrats look to bolster it. Of course, there will be many investigations. A town in Oklahoma is under a mandatory evacuation order after flooding has sent a series of barges careening towards a local dam.The city of Webbers Falls issued a mandatory evacuation order Wednesday after flooding caused two barges to break loose from the Port of Muskogee on the Arkansas River.The barges are currently headed toward the Webbers Falls Lock and Dam 16. Should the dam fail, it could cause catastrophic flooding in an area already affected by high waters.The barges also caused a partial shutdown of I-40 in Oklahoma.According to Scripps station KJRH in Tulsa, the I-40 bridge in Webbers Falls was hit by a barge in May 2002 and collapsed.
