URUMQI, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese leader Zhou Yongkang has called for breakthroughs in the development of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region during his five-day inspection tour there.Breakthroughs should be achieved in efforts to resettle herdsmen, promote bilingual and vocational education, utilize natural resources, and develop industrial parks, said Zhou, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee.Zhou told local officials to thoroughly carry out policies set by the central government to develop Xinjiang and strive for the improvement of well-being for the locals.Zhou traveled across the sprawling Xinjiang, about one sixth of China's territory, from Sept. 19 to 24. He visited rural households, schools, farms, a crude oil pipeline station at China-Kazakstan border, industrial zones, and army camps.

BEIJING, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese top political advisor Jia Qinglin on Monday met with nearly 60 foreign political leaders and scholars on the eve of a forum to discuss global trends and common challenges.The forum will take place in Beijing on Tuesday and Wednesday and is organized by the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC),the country's top advisory body.The forum's theme for its fourth conference is "new era, new challenges, new vision -- building a future for all.""It is significant for the 21st Century Forum to hold a conference on the global situation, challenges and visions," Jia, chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, said.More than 100 officials, scholars and business executives from home and abroad will attend the two-day conference of the 21st Century Forum.As the world has been undergoing deep changes, transformation and adjustment, it is imperative for all countries to be interdependent, reform the international financial system and build a justifiable and reasonable world order, Jia told the foreign attendees to the forum.Among the foreign attendees are some well-known dignitaries, including former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, former European Commission President Romano Prodi, former Australian Prime Minister John Howard, former Russian Prime Minister Evgeni Primakov, former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and former Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda.Jia briefed foreign leaders on China's economic and social development, stressing China remained the world's biggest developing country despite its economic boom."It will take China decades of unremitting efforts to accomplish modernization," Jia said, adding China would adhere to the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics.Jia said China would continue to pursue peaceful development and develop friendly cooperation with all countries in accordance with its independent foreign policy.Jia reaffirmed China's efforts to play its due part in dealing with global challenges and contributing to world peace and development.Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo called for all countries to pursue a path of cooperation and common prosperity.After the meeting, Jia also hosted a welcome banquet for forum attendees.The 21st Century Forum convened its first conference in 1996. ANKARA, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese and Turkish scholars gathered at a political forum in the Turkish capital of Ankara on Monday to discuss their economic ties, cooperation in the Middle East and coordination within the Group of 20 (G20).Wang Zhongwei, deputy director of China's State Council Information Office which sponsors the forum, said China and Turkey, both G20 members and emerging economies, share interests in such major issues as reforming international financial system and tackling climate change."We should further coordinate and cooperate in those issues. That's in the interests of the two countries' people and benefits regional and world peace and stability," Wang said in an opening speech.Fatih Ceylan, deputy undersecretariat of the Turkish Foreign Ministry, said China and Turkey hold similar views on many regional and international issues and have great potential for better cooperation.As a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, Turkey has worked together with China very well in issues related to Afghanistan, the Palestinians and Iran, he said.Zhang Yuyan, a scholar with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, suggested China and Turkey uphold the principle of " common but differentiated responsibility" on climate change and strive to increase the representation and voice of developing countries in international institutions.Kamer Kasim, vice president of Turkey's International Strategic Research Organization, said it's good for both China and Turkey to increase cooperation in security, energy, tourism and other areas.The forum was a part of a large-scale cultural event termed " Experience China in Turkey", which was held in Ankara and the Turkish city of Istanbul.The event, starting on Sunday and to last till the end of the month, covers nine major activities, including Chinese-Turkish political and economic forums, Chinese movie and television weeks, Chinese cuisine festival and exchanges between journalists and writers.

BEIJING, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- The value of yuan, China's currency Renminbi, hit new high against U.S. dollar Wednesday as the central parity rate of the yuan was set at 6.6693 per U.S. dollar, according to the data released by the China Foreign Exchange Trading System.Wednesday's central parity rate beat the previous record of 6.6732 on Oct. 11.The yuan has picked up its strength against the U.S. dollars and seen increased volatility in the trading days since the People's Bank of China (PBOC), the central bank, announced on June 19 this year to increase exchange rate flexibility.Based on Wednesday's central parity, the Chinese currency has strengthened against the U.S. dollar by about 2.32 percent from the rate of 6.8275 per U.S. dollar that was set a day before the PBOC's pledge to increase flexibility.On China's foreign exchange spot market, the yuan can rise or fall 0.5 percent from the central parity rate during trading each day.The PBOC released the yuan's central parity rates against a basket of currencies -- the U.S. dollar, the euro, the Japanese yen, the Hong Kong dollar, the British pound and the Malaysian Ringgit.The yuan's parity rate against the euro was set by the central bank at 9.294 Wednesday, lower from 9.2574 on Oct. 12, the previous trading day.The yuan's rate against 100 yen was 8.1477 Wednesday, compared with 8.124 on Tuesday.
