SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Health experts are weighing in after a local nurse tested positive for COVID-19 more than a week after receiving the Pfizer vaccine.In a Facebook message posted on December 18, Matthew W., an ER nurse at at two different local hospitals, talked about receiving the Pfizer vaccine that day. He told ABC 10News his arm was sore for a day but he suffered no other side effects.Six days later on Christmas Eve -- after working a shift in the COVID-19 unit -- he became sick. He got the chills and later came down with muscle aches and fatigue.The day after Christmas, he went to a drive-up hospital testing site and tested positive for COVID-19."It's not unexpected at all. If you work through the numbers, this is exactly what we’d expect to happen if someone was exposed," said Dr. Christian Ramers, an infectious disease specialist with Family Health Centers of San Diego. He serves on the clinical advisory panel for the county’s vaccine rollout.He points out, it is possible Matthew was infected before receiving the vaccine, as the incubation period may be as much as two weeks. Dr. Ramers says if Matthew did contract it after the vaccine, it’s still in line with what we know."We know from the vaccine clinical trials that it’s going to take about 10 to 14 days for you to start to develop protection from the vaccine," said Dr. Ramers.Dr. Ramers says he knows of several other local cases where health care workers became infected around the time they received the vaccine. He says all the cases illustrate the fact that results aren’t immediate. Even after you start receiving some protection, it won't be full protection."That first dose we think gives you somewhere around 50%, and you need that second dose to get up to 95%," said Dr. Ramers.Dr. Ramers says Matthew’s story also shows that even with vaccines, the pandemic isn’t going to turn around instantly."You hear heath practitioners being very optimistic about it being the beginning of the end, but it’s going to be a slow roll, weeks to months as we roll out the vaccine," said Dr. Ramers.He adds this case is a good reminder of why masks, handwashing, and other COVID protocols are important, even after receiving the vaccine.Matthew says he’s feeling better since his symptoms peaked on Christmas Day but still feels fatigued. 2323

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Driving under the influence arrests have dropped noticeably in cities where ride sharing programs have expanded, a new study says.An analysis performed by Moll Law Group and the University of California says DUI arrests in San Diego dropped 32% from 2015 to 2016.The study also looked at four other major cities with declines in California: 28% in San Jose, 26% in Sacramento, 14% for Los Angeles and the San Francisco-Oakland area.“We still seeing quite a few impaired people, they’re just not sitting in the front seat,” said Mark McCullough with San Diego Police Department’s traffic division.McCullough says the declining trend began a few a years ago when more new forms of transportation became available.“Five years ago we’d run a DUI checkpoint on a Friday night and we’d arrest 20 people and up,” said McCullough, “now on any given Friday if we arrest 10-15 people that’s a busy night for us.”Experts believe there may be other reasons behind the figures declining, but it’s still a number they don’t mind going down.“You’re not using your brain to your full potential if you get arrested for a DUI,” said McCullough, “there are just so many forms of alternative transportation.” 1225

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Following a four-month-long sting known as "Operation Red Beard," dozens of people have been arrested for selling drugs in East Village.Thirty-two arrests have been made so far. The District Attorney’s office announced the arrests were made in multiple locations within a one-mile radius. The largest bust locations were on K Street and 17th Street, each with at least nine arrests. The D.A.’s office and the San Diego Police Department joined forces in April to launch Operation Red Beard after residents complained of the among of drugs being sold in the area. Those drugs included methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine, oxycodone, and Xanax. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Employees at a Little Caesars franchise location in Logan Heights say their paychecks are bouncing and management is not responding to their concerns. The workers say the problems started in March, and they told 10News they've received paychecks, only to have them bounce a few days later and racking up banking fees every time. The employees 10News spoke to, from the National Avenue location, did not want to be identified. When they spoke out to supervisors, the employees claimed they were told to not to bother upper management. Other times, they said, they were left in the dark with no response. Employees identified the owner as Tony Bith, saying he owns at least a dozen Little Caesars locations throughout San Diego County. The one in Barrio Logan on Main Street is also closed; the National City Location on Plaza Boulevard is still open. 10News tried to reach Bith by phone but did not hear back as of the publication of this story. 10News also attempted to make contact with him at his home address, but could not access him because he lives in a gated community. 10News reached out to Little Caesars corporate to find out if they were aware of what was going on and they sent the following statement: 1243
