NEW YORK — The Uncle Ben’s rice brand is changing its name to Ben's Original. Parent company Mars Inc. is the latest company to drop a logo criticized as a racial stereotype. Mars said the Ben's Original packaging will hit stores in 2021. Since the 1940s, the rice boxes have featured a white-haired Black man, sometimes with a bowtie. According to Uncle Ben's website, the name "Uncle Ben" refers to a "legendary Texan farmer, Uncle Ben who was known for his exceptionally high-quality rice." Frank Brown, a maitre d' at a Chicago restaurant, posed for "Uncle Ben's" portrait, which has since served as the brand's logo.Critics have said the image evoke servitude. NEW YORK -- A Bronx man is facing murder charges after his mother was found dead in their apartment early Wednesday, according to the NYPD.Police say Carmen Aponte, 66, was discovered by her adult daughter around 1:30 a.m. when she came home to the family's apartment on Seneca Avenue, near Faile Street in the Hunts Point section.Responding officers say they found the woman unconscious in her bed with injuries to her head. NEW YORK (AP) — The operator of Ann Taylor and Lane Bryant filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Thursday, the latest retailer to do so during the pandemic. Ascena Retail Group, which operates nearly 3,000 stores mostly at malls, has been dragged down by debt and weak sales for years. In a press release, the company said they were closing all of their plus-size stores Catherines.The company also said in the release that they plan to "strategically reduce its footprint with the closing of a significant number of Justice stores and a select number of Ann Taylor, LOFT, Lane Bryant, and Lou & Grey stores."It joins other retailers that have filed for bankruptcy in recent weeks, including Brooks Brothers, Neiman Marcus, J.C. Nintendo has filed a lawsuit against an Arizona man after the video game giant claims he operated two websites "built almost entirely on the brazen and mass-scale infringement of Nintendo's intellectual property rights," according to court documents.The lawsuit, filed July 19 in Arizona U.S. District Court, claims Jacob Mathias and his company, Mathias Designs, L.L.C, operated 'LoveROMs.com' and 'LoveRetro.co' — websites lawyers for Nintendo say "are among the most open and notorious online hubs for pirated video games."The company claims Mathias posted thousands of Nintendo games on the sites that were downloadable as files — known as "ROMs" — and playable on phones or computers through software referred to as emulators.
