SAN DIEGO COUNTY (CNS) - Seven "cool zones" are scheduled to open at noon Monday in San Diego County to provide relief from high temperatures.The cool zones are air-conditioned locations throughout the hottest areas of the county:-- Borrego Springs Library, 2580 Country Club Road;-- Fallbrook Community Center, 341 Heald Lane;-- Lakeside Community Center, 9841 Vine St.;-- Potrero Branch Library, 24883 Potrero Valley Road;-- Santa Ysabel Nature Center, 22135 CA-79;-- Spring Valley Community Center, 8735 Jamacha Blvd.; and-- Valley Center Branch Library, 29200 Cole Grade Road.All sites will be open from noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.COVID-19 safety measures will be in place. Anyone entering a cool zone will have their temperature taken and all visitors and staff must wear face coverings and practice social distancing.The libraries are cooling sites only; no library services are being offered.Animals, except service animals, are not permitted in cooling zones."Although we need to take steps to keep seniors safe, it still remains important to also keep them cool," said Supervisor Dianne Jacob. "Cool zones provide a refuge during the hot summer months, so it's helpful the county has developed a plan to get them open."The cool zones program is offered in partnership with the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency Aging & Independence Services and San Diego Gas & Electric Co. 1424

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Proposed plans to restore the Mission Bay wetlands have been released by the group ReWild Mission Bay.Organizers say those plans would include moving a popular campsite in the area. The “Campland on the Bay” site would have to be relocated after 50 years.Neighbors who live near the area say the possible move is disappointing. “I was just telling my sister who is out of town this place is legendary. People come here all times of the year.”Managers at the campsite say they’ve extended their lease another five years but it could change depending on the project.Organizers of the expansion say the existing wetlands in Mission Bay may not be here in years to come.“The way it is now wetlands will be overtaken by sea level rise,” says Jim Peugh with the San Diego Audubon Society. “One has to plan ahead to make sure we have wetlands in the future.”Those plans would include giving tourists and locals easier access to the land. It will also give wildlife a larger nesting area.A statement from Campland on the Bay says in part:“We remain hopeful the City will continue to provide this amenity for local residents for another 50 years. The public does not have to choose between waterfront camping and wetlands – both uses can support one another as Campland has proven for the past half-century.”Organizers of the expansion says there is no exact timeline on when restoration will take place. SAN DIEGO, California — One person died and two others were injured, and Coast Guard crews rescued 17 others after a mega yacht collided with a fishing vessel off the coast of Imperial Beach on Friday night. The 332-foot yacht, Attessa IV, crashed into the 65-foot sportfisher vessel, Prowler, just before 8 p.m. about nine miles off the shore of Imperial Beach, according to the Coast Guard.The collision caused extensive damage to the right side of the Prowler.One man was airlifted to UCSD Hillcrest and died at the hospital, the Coast Guard confirmed. Two others were injured in the accident.Coast Guard crews transferred 17 passengers from the damaged fishing boat back to San Diego. The Prowler's 10 remaining passengers were transferred onto the Attessa IV, set to return to San Diego.The Coast Guard is investigating the cause of the accident. 884

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- One month after the deadly bluff collapse in Encinitas, the husband of one of the victims is speaking out for the very first time. Dr. Pat Davis is a well-known dentist in the community. He lost his wife, daughter, and sister-in-law in that tragic collapse. Davis says he’s still in a state of healing. But despite the pain of losing his family members, he is now urging local leaders to come up with a plan, so no family has to go through this again. “It’s a terrible thing to experience,” says Davis. “I can’t think of a worse situation that could of happened to me as a family man.”The Davis family was out for a day at the beach back on August 2nd. Davis’ wife Julie, daughter Annie Clave and Sister-in-law Elizabeth Davis were sitting under the cliff when it gave out, killing all three women. “People in my family have been down to Grandview beach a thousand times, over the last 25 years,” says Davis. “We’ve never looked at it as being a place that was really dangerous.”Annie Clave’s friend, Tiffany Rogers, was also at the beach that day. She held back tears describing her three friends. ““Three extraordinary women who had just everything, just beautiful, so beautiful on the inside,” says Rogers. As part of healing, Dr. Davis says his new purpose in life is to find a solution to stabilize the bluffs. He supports options like cutting off some access to the beach, sand replenishment, or putting a barrier wall along the cliffs. Just this past weekend, there have been two more bluff collapses, in Encinitas and Torrey Pines State Beach. A couple of weeks ago, Davis made a passionate plea before the Encinitas City Council to take action. Thursday afternoon, he shared his concerns with Congressman Mike Levin who is fighting to get federal funding to shore up the bluffs. “It’s not a question of if this is going to happen. It’s when it’s going to happen again,” says Davis. “All you have to do is go walk along our beaches up here; you see cliffs that look like they could fall at any time.” 2034
