College students rely on internships to give them hands-on experience before graduating and going into the workforce. However, this year, 22% or nearly one in four college students had their summer internships canceled because of the pandemic, according to a survey done by the National Association of Colleges and Employers.“I was supposed to work with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this summer, working full-time for about 10 weeks,” said Purdue University junior Patrick Haimbaugh. “I was really excited about it, but it did get canceled.”Fortunately for Haimbaugh, when his internship fell through, a company called TechPoint was seeing how many students were losing internships and decided it wanted to help.“It felt like I had a second chance, like the summer wasn’t just going to be a blowout,” said Haimbaugh.“We thought you know what based on our organization, position and where we sit in the community, this is an area where we can make a difference,” said Mike Langellier, the CEO of TechPoint.TechPoint normally has a summer internship program that helps about 100 students, but in the wake of the wave of internship cancellations, it decided to create a second summer internship program for five times as many students. The new program was practically created overnight and called the SOS Challenge.“Their task is over the course of five weeks to come up with a product prototype and a go-to market strategy aimed at one of nine different challenge topics, and they are all COVID related,” said Langellier. “So, they include things like tele-health, outbreak detections, restaurants and small businesses.”TechPoint got 56 other companies and more than 250 tech professionals to commit to helping with the SOS Challenge interns. CLEVELAND, Ohio - Like any other case, President Donald Trump’s positive COVID-19 test will set into motion a series of events designed to determine who the president might have been in close contact with. That investigation—called contact tracing—is considered by many experts to be one of the best ways of handling new outbreaks and potential COVID-19 clusters.President Trump announced early Friday morning that he and the first lady had tested positive for the virus. The president had been in Cleveland earlier in the week for the first presidential debate. The incubation period for COVID-19 is anywhere between two to 14 days, although in many cases the period is between three to five days. It remains unclear where and how President Trump was infected with the virus.Members of the small crowd that attended the debate in person were required to be tested for the virus. Anyone with a positive test was not allowed inside.In typical cases, once a person has tested positive for the virus, contact tracers—which act almost like disease detectives—will ask the patient a series of questions about their activities prior to the positive test. Eventually, the contact tracers will work to find out who the patient might have been in close contact with.Generally, close contact is defined as another person who may have been within six feet of the patient for at least 10 minutes. The people identified as close contacts will be alerted by the contact tracers of their possible exposure and risk of infection. All parties are then asked to self-quarantine for at least 14 days.Although the close contacts are not apprised of the identity of the person who tested positive for the virus, sometimes they are not forthcoming with information to contact tracers.“When we call the contacts, you get a variety of responses. Sometimes people hang up, sometimes they cuss us out,” said Romona Brazile of the Cuyahoga County Board of Health.The contact tracers will also ask the close contacts about any possible pre-existing conditions and advise them on how to keep the virus from spreading in their homes. The goal of contact tracing is to determine who might have been exposed in order to keep the virus from spreading uncontrollably.Whether it be SARS, HIV, or Ebola, contact tracing has been used by epidemiologists and virologists for decades. (KGTV)— More than three business owners in Coronado have been hit by criminals using fake 0 bills to make small purchases.Sam Frederick’s shop, Little Sam’s Island and Beach Fun on Coronado Island has all things fun. But last Saturday, fun was not on his mind, after somebody took advantage of his new employee.A man tried to buy three towels with a 0 bill. But at the last minute, he changed his mind to buy just one.“He realized that my guy was going to cash the 0 bill, so he puts two towels back, and he got more money that way,” Frederick said. When Frederick checked the cash register that night, he said something was not right. “I knew right there… The Ben Franklin wasn’t in shape at all,” he said. Coronado police say he is not alone. Investigators are looking into at least three more counterfeit 0 bill incidents in the last week. Joshua Jordan owns Treasures from the Heart, next door. He too was hit. But the incident happened not once, but twice. “He saw that it was an easy mark, went to the next store, came back again, and bought a little more to look better,” Jordan said. He did not use the change he got from the first transaction but paid with another fake 0 bill with the same serial number. The bill was immediately rejected by the bank the next day.“I know maybe to some companies, 0 is not much. But to me it really hurts,” Jordan said. As Coronado Police continues their investigation, they are also encouraging business owners to check each bill with a pen and a black light machine, ask for ID, or call them if they are suspicious. “Right now we are working in cooperation with the secret service to see if this is an isolated incident in Coronado, or part of a larger trend in San Diego as a whole,” Det.
