ISTANBUL, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's four-nation Eurasian tour has scored marked achievements and further deepened China-Europe cooperation, said Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, who described the visit as "a great complete success."Wen paid official visits to Greece, Belgium, Italy and Turkey and attended the 8th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) and the 13th China-EU summit in the eight days from Oct. 2-9.Yang said Premier Wen's visit is aimed at boosting mutual trust through dialogues and promoting common development through cooperation.During his eight-day visit, Wen took part in more than 70 meetings, events and activities and paid a brief visit to Berlin as a guest of German Chancellor Angela Merkel in the midst of his stay in Brussels.In addition to talking with leaders of the four countries and the European Union (EU), Wen also met with people from the local cultural, industrial and business circles and held joint press conferences or issued joint statements together with the leaders of the countries.Premier Wen vividly presented China's policies and positions, trying different angles, Yang said, which had further improved bilateral relations between China and the four countries and deepened China-Europe ties in the new historic period.

BRUSSELS, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao urged Tuesday the European Union (EU) to objectively and fairly treat the RMB exchange rate issue as that would benefit the EU, China, and the world economy.Wen made the remarks while meeting the Euro Group troika, including Euro Group President and Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker, European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet and EU Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn.The meeting took place on the sidelines of the two-day eighth Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Summit in Brussels as China is under external pressure to appreciate its currency.Wen said China would further reform its formation mechanism of the yuan exchange rate to increase the currency's flexibility.China's central bank has announced on June 19 a series of steps of reforms. The Chinese currency has so far strengthened by about 2 percent against the U.S. dollar.China would also continue to expand import from the EU and strive to balance the trade, said Wen, adding that China was committed to transforming its economic development pattern, restructuring the economy and increasing domestic demands.Wen called on both sides to develop healthy ties from a strategic perspective as the EU has become China's largest trading partner while China stands as the EU's important exporting market.As the world economy was gradually recovering with uncertainties still hovering high, China and the EU should work together to combat the international financial crisis, Wen added.The Euro Group leaders appreciated China's support for the euro and the euro zone, saying the EU and China were good partners and enjoy extensive common interests.They also said the EU rejected both trade protectionism and currency war, and agreed differences and problems should be solved by dialogues.In a speech to the Greek parliament on Monday, Premier Wen said China supported a stable euro and would not reduce its euro-bond holdings.The three Euro Group leaders also held talks with China's Finance Minister Xie Xuren and central bank governor Zhou Xiaochuan here on Monday. BEIJING, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- The United States has repeatedly blocked investment from Chinese companies on national security grounds, a protectionist move that will only harm its own interests, analysts say.Eight U.S. congressmen recently asked the Obama administration to scrutinize a deal between Chinese telecom equipment giant Huawei and the American operator Sprint Nextel on national security grounds.It was not the first time Huawei's attempts to break into the U.S. market have been stymied. Earlier its buyout attempt of 3Com was summarily dismissed by the U.S. government.Citing national security concerns again, a bipartisan group of 50 lawmakers in July requested that the government investigate an investment project of China's Anshan Iron and Steel Group (Ansteel), China's fourth largest steelmaker, which plans to establish a joint rebar venture with a U.S. partner in Mississippi."It is inappropriate for some U.S. lawmakers to label regular business behavior as a move that threatens national security," Yao Jian, a spokesman for the Ministry of Commerce, recently said about Ansteel's investment plan."I hope the United States can create a better investment environment for Chinese enterprises," he said.Chinese analysts said the actions were sheer protectionism, adding that national security concerns is only a lame excuse by U.S. authorities, whose true intention is to protect the interests of domestic enterprises and industries.Moreover, standing up to China's allegedly unfair trade practices can easily earn the congressmen much needed political chips in the upcoming mid-term election in November, the analysts said.The setback that Huawei and Ansteel suffered is only the tip of the iceberg. Actually, blocking investment from Chinese companies in the name of national security has morphed into a knee-jerk reaction that could only harm America's own interests.Emcore Corporation, a U.S. fiber optics producer, announced in late June that it has abandoned a joint venture in partnership with China's Tangshan Caofeidian Investment Corporation because the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States "has certain regulatory concerns about the transaction."
