He also commuted the sentences of 21 current inmates on Friday, including several who killed their victims and had been serving life-without-parole sentences. (AP) — A Southern California man has been arrested on suspicion of making more than 10,000 harassing phone calls to government offices, including some that included death threats against those answering the phone, federal prosecutors said.Robert Stahlnecker, 48, was arrested at his home in the Mojave Desert town of Twentynine Palms on Friday and held in federal custody after making an initial court appearance, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.He was charged with threatening federal officers and employees, making interstate communications with the threat to injure a person and anonymous telecommunications harassment.There his no listing for his home phone number and it couldn’t immediately be determined if he has an attorney. His arraignment was scheduled for Dec. 26.According to a 20-page complaint filed in federal court, the calls included three he made within five minutes on Aug. 28 to a congresswoman’s office in San Mateo. Prosecutors said he threatened to come to the office and kill the staffer who answered the phone.On Sept. 28, he allegedly made eight calls in seven minutes to the Washington office of a U.S. senator from Ohio. During the calls prosecutors said he used vulgar language in berating and threatening to kill an intern who answered the phone.Neither member of Congress was identified.In all, prosecutors said, Stahlnecker has made more than 10,000 calls to government agencies and elected officials since January.Prosecutors say U.S. Capitol Police have been investigating harassing and threatening calls allegedly made by Stahlnecker for at least 10 years. He repeated it in what one friend described as "nervous energy" calls to friends and associates in recent days.Stone believes the special counsel's office will seek an indictment. CNN reporting details emails and other evidence that question whether Stone coordinated with WikiLeaks -- and perhaps the Trump campaign -- about Democratic emails hacked and released late in the 2016 campaign.The new reporting on Stone raises a bigger issue that has some of the President's friends and allies worried.Mueller has been quiet for weeks. Justice Department guidelines urge prosecutors to be cautious in the 60 days or so before an election, so not to be seen as trying to influence voters. (AP) — Democrats have won two Republican-held California state Senate seats in the Central Valley, giving the party veto-proof supermajorities in both chambers of the Legislature.Vote totals updated since Election Day made winners Monday of Melissa Hurtado and Assemblywoman Anna Caballero.Hurtado won the open 12th District seat while Caballero defeated Republican Sen. Andy Vidak in the neighboring 14th District. Both are in the Fresno area.The victories give Democrats a two-thirds advantage in the Senate. SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom says the state must do more to protect essential workers, many of whom are Latino, from the economic and health harms of the coronavirus. Newsom on Friday said he'll work with the Legislature to expand protections against evictions and expand workers compensation and paid sick leave. He enacted similar policies through executive order earlier this year but many expired or will soon. Latinos make up 39% of California’s population but 55% of confirmed positive coronavirus cases, according to state data.
