SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County has seen a nearly 5% increase in its response to the 2020 Census above the 2010 response rate, according to state census data.Data collected through Tuesday indicates 72.9% of county households have responded this year, as opposed to 68% in 2010, mirroring an increased response rate statewide.Census officials say that California's 2020 self-response rates surpassed the 2010 rate on Wednesday, with 68.4% of California households responding either online, by phone or mail. The 2010 rate was 68.2%.State census officials touted the success of their outreach campaign, particularly given California is considered one of the ``hardest-to-count'' states in the country due its size and a high number of people who are difficult to contact for census purposes, such as recent immigrants, people who lack high-speed internet access or people with limited English proficiency.Campaign efforts will continue until the Sept. 30 deadline.``It is through the collective efforts of millions of Californians that we have surpassed our 2010 self-response rate. But make no mistake -- we are not done yet. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Padres outfielder Tommy Pham has sued a Midway District strip club where he was stabbed last month.Pham, 32, was stabbed around 10:30 p.m. Oct. 11 outside Pacers Showgirls International by an unknown person or persons who took part in a fight that broke out in the club's parking lot.According to the lawsuit filed Tuesday in San Diego Superior Court, the fight outside Pacers left Pham "trapped" inside the club.The suit alleges the club's private security "escalated the risk" to Pham "by participating in the fight and antagonizing" the fight participants.The suit also alleges club employees did not contact law enforcement "or take any reasonable measures to mitigate" the dangers. Due to unspecified "incidents of violence by third parties" that had occurred at the club in the past, the lawsuit alleges Pacers should have been aware of the possibility of a similar incident and taken measures to prevent it.A representative with the club could not immediately reached for comment.Pham later tried to leave the club, and while walking toward the valet stand to get his car, he was attacked by someone who stabbed the major leaguer "without any provocation," the complaint states.RELATED: County demands Midway District strip club stop "live entertainment" over health ordersA statement released by the Padres shortly after the incident described Pham's injury as a non-life-threatening slash wound to his lower back, while the lawsuit alleges he suffered "catastrophic injuries, which have and will continue to cause him significant economic damage, including but not limited to his earning capacity as an elite professional baseball player."Police have not announced any arrests in connection with the stabbing.A hearing in the case is currently slated for June 25, according to court records. 1836

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council voted unanimously, 9-0, today in favor of building a new fire station at UC San Diego.The fire station is the first on the campus and will serve UCSD students, faculty, staff and the school's surrounding neighborhoods. The station will be located in the campus' northwest corner at the intersection of North Torrey Pines Road and Northpoint Driveway."UC San Diego is pleased that the San Diego City Council has approved a fire station to be built on the campus," UCSD Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla said. "We look forward to working together with the City of San Diego on this vital project. UC San Diego is significantly growing its enrollment to make the university one of the nation's premier residential campuses and it is critical that we address life safety issues as part of our growth."More than 36,000 students currently live on UCSD's campus, with the school planning to add another 20,000 student beds by 2022. According to city officials, the rapid campus growth has led to an increase in incidents in an area that is currently outside the area that existing fire stations can cover.According to UCSD and the city, the new fire station will include three fire apparatus vehicle bays, administrative offices, a kitchen and dining area, a training room, an exercise room and crew quarters. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego region's unemployment rate declined to 9% in September, a half-percent drop from the previous month, according to figures released Friday by the state Employment Development Department.According to the EDD, total non-farm employment in San Diego County increased by 11,700 jobs month-over-month -- from 1,372,900 to 1,384,600 -- while farm employment remained unchanged at 9,600.The unemployment rate at this time last year was 2.9%. The region lost 117,700 non-farm jobs and 500 agricultural jobs over the year.According to the San Diego Workforce Partnership, the unemployment numbers are skewed by a large number of San Diegans who have dropped out of the workforce altogether.Whether taking care of aging parents, helping children with school as distance learning continues or concerns over contracting the virus at work, as many as 30,000 people have dropped out of the workforce since February. Unemployment rates typically only count people who are actively looking for work, so these people may not be factored into economic recovery data."While there are lots of production jobs available, San Diegans are still hesitant to go back to work," said Mel Katz, executive officer of Manpower West. "We are seeing hourly wages increasing by two or more dollars per hour to entice workers to leave home and enter the workforce."The region's unemployment rate rose to 15% in May during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to EDD data, while data from the San Diego Association of Governments showed rates of nearly 30% unemployment in May.In September, the state's unemployment rate dropped to 10.8% from 11.6% the previous month, and the nation's decreased to 7.7% from 8.5%.Government jobs led in local monthly gains, with 6,800 jobs added to the region's total. Leisure and hospitality gained 2,500 jobs; educational and health services 2,400; trade, transportation and utilities 1,400; other services 1,100; and professional and business services gained 100.Construction posted the most job losses, with 1,400. Manufacturing lost 900, financial activities 200 and information posted a loss of 100 jobs.Comparing year-over-year, leisure and hospitality continue to top the list in jobs lost, with a total of 52,400 jobs lost since last September -- 38,400 of which came in accommodation and food services.Since the same time last year, government lost 14,200 jobs; trade, transportation and utilities 13,900; educational and health services 10,600; other services 10,300; manufacturing 6,500; construction 4,400; information 3,500; and financial activities 3,400.Professional and business was the sole industry to post job gains year-over-year, with 1,500 new jobs. 2706

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Scorching heat is expected everywhere except the coast in San Diego County Friday and a brutal stretch of temperatures is not expected to relent until the middle of next week, according to the National Weather Service.Building high pressure over the southwestern United States will usher in scorching temperatures for the next five to six days, with the peak of the heat expected Friday through Monday, forecasters said.The NWS issued an excessive heat warning that will be in effect from noon Friday to 9 p.m. Monday in the county valleys, mountains and deserts.LATEST 10NEWS WEATHER FORECASTThe NWS urged residents to drink plenty of fluids, stay out of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors. Also, children and pets should be never be left unattended in a vehicle, with car interiors able to "reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes," according to the NWS.High temperatures Friday are forecast to reach 86 degrees near the coast, 96 inland, 100 in the western valleys, 106 near the foothills, 103 in the mountains and 120 in the deserts.Highs in the county deserts are expected to remain around 118 through Wednesday, according to the NWS. The mercury in the western valleys is forecast to top out in the low-to-mid 90s through Wednesday as well, while highs near the foothills will remain in the mid-to-high 90s through at least Thursday.Borrego Springs set a high temperature record on Thursday, according to the NWS.
