AMMAN, Dec. 25 (Xinhua) -- Jordan and China on Saturday signed an economic and technical cooperation agreement under which China provides the Arab kingdom with 4.5 million U.S. dollars to implement development projects.The agreement was signed by Jordan's Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Jafar Hassan and China's Deputy Minister of Commerce Chen Jian, who was in Jordan for an official visit.Hassan commended the bilateral distinguished tie, voicing thanking and appreciation for the grant from the Chinese government, according to a statement issued by the ministry.The minister stressed Jordan' keenness to develop ties with China, adding that the bilateral ties witness distinguished development in all political, economic and cultural fields.The minister added that the signing of the agreement represents the two countries' keenness to foster bilateral ties in different fields, especially in light of current regional and international circumstances.The Chinese official expressed China's commitment to continue to provide technical and financial support to Jordan in different fields.According to the ministry, China's support to Jordan in loans and grants from 2009 to2010 stood at 119.5 million U.S. dollars.

CHENGDU, Nov. 12 (Xinhua)-- The reconstruction of the Erwang Temple, which was damaged in the Wenchuan Earthquake in 2008, is expected to finish on Nov. 18 in southwest China's Sichuan Province, according to local heritage protection authorities on Friday.Sitting in the Yulei Mountains in Dujiangyan City, Erwang Temple was built over 2,000 years ago to commemorate Li Bing and his son, the two engineers who built the Dujiangyan irrigation system, which was listed as a World Heritage site in 2000.The temple will soon be partially open for visitors and the final touches are being added to the water supply, drainage system and lavatories in these areas, said Fan Tuoyu, deputy chief of the Dujiangyan Cultural Relics Administration.The entire temple will be opened after the Chinese Lunar New Year, which falls on Feb. 3, 2011, said Fan.The reconstruction project kicked off in June, 2008 with an investment of 126 million yuan (19 million U.S. dollars) from the central budget.The temple was seriously damaged in the Wenchuan earthquake with almost all the ancient buildings having collapsed.

BEIJING, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- China is trying to have more workers and farmers and fewer university graduates working as public servants because university graduates may have achieved academically, but farmers and workers often have grass-roots life experience.But achieving the goal has not been easy -- for the government, and workers and farmers as well.The annual National Public Servant Exam on Dec. 5 attracted more than 1 million candidates for 16,000 vacancies around the country, according to Nie Shengkui, a senior State Administration of Civil Service official.For the first time, it was stipulated that workers and farmers were preferred for some of the positions, in a move to make the exam more inclusive.As part of the pilot project, a total of 14 positions in grass-roots branches of central government departments at the county-level or below - including customs, taxation and rail police - in the regions of Guangdong, Sichuan, Xinjiang and Gansu were reserved for workers and farmers.Including more grass-roots workers and farmers in the exam is an improvement in the civil servant selection process, said Zhao Shuming, a professor of human resource management at Nanjing University in east China's Jiangsu Province.Compared with university graduates, workers and farmers are suited to some public service positions that involve work with grass-roots people, Zhao said.However, according to Nie, only 62 workers and farmers of the 171 qualified applicants took the exam."The competition in the public service exam is fierce, and I believe many workers and farmers lacked the confidence to take the exam," said Li Zhen, an official in Sichuan's provincial Department of Human Resources and Social Security.Li said that to his knowledge, there were no workers and farmers that took the exam in the province."Become a civil servant? BEIJING, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- China aims to better protect lawyers' rights and facilitate their work through enhanced financial and policy support, according to the Ministry of Justice.The ministry also intends to intensify supervision on the work of lawyers and law firms against unsound practices, it said on Tuesday.Efforts will be made to better protect lawyers' rights to meet with their clients in police custody and facilitate their rights to review documents, conduct necessary investigations and collect evidence, the ministry said in a written interview with Xinhua Tuesday.The ministry, which has recently issued a circular on its proposal to further improve the work concerning lawyers, called for a system to guarantee funding for lawyers' work."Lawyers should be subsidized if working as legal advisors to the government or providing legal services for the public interest," the ministry said.Also, government agencies are urged to continue their financial support for those government-funded law offices in underdeveloped regions of the country and offer more funding for lawyers' training.The ministry called on courts and prosecution agencies to recruit more judges and prosecutors from outstanding lawyers and encouraged government bodies to select more qualified lawyers to work as civil servants.Meanwhile, China will improve the evaluation of lawful practices undertaken by the country's lawyers and increase supervision over the work of law offices and lawyers, according to the ministry."Judicial administration departments should conduct annual checks of law firms' work while bar associations should check lawyers' lawful practices every year," it said.It called for intensified checks for unsound practices of law firms or lawyers, including those of undermining justice in law enforcement, public order, or legal rights and interests of the masses."Lawyers who ignore or violate laws and regulations governing lawyers' practices should be dealt with seriously, including expulsion from the legal profession," the ministry said.Conditions and procedures which applicants should meet and pass before becoming certified lawyers must be strictly followed, the ministry said.According to the ministry, the number of certified lawyers and law firms in China exceeded 166,000 and 15,000, respectively, at the end of 2009.
