CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) - The Coronado teenager nearly shot to death in a robbery last spring is now a real estate agent, possibly the youngest in his community. At just 19, Jacob McKanry took the test to get his license just days after getting released from the hospital.The Coronado High School Senior nearly died after he was shot selling jewelry to a couple of guys he met online.McKanry and a friend met the so-called buyers on Orange Avenue around 9 p.m. on May 4th.One of the guys grabbed the necklace while the other pulled out a gun. McKanry tried to get back the jewelry."I just hear a giant boom from behind me, and I feel my insides go like this," said McKanry.He said the shooter than aimed for McKanry's friend."My buddy was backing up, and he fell over a bike rack and the bullet, he shot right as he fell over so, the bullet went right over his head and hit that Which Wich window which definitely saved his life," said McKanry.McKanry was released from the hospital after ten days, but ultimately readmitted with a near-lethal infection.He says he still has pain in his liver and pressure in his lungs. He endured a ten-hour surgery to have the bullet, lodged between his spine and aorta, removed."It went through the back, at first it shattered part of one of my ribs, so that's how it entered into the body. So I broke, for lack of a better term, broke 2 of my ribs, and it took out a baseball chunk size of my liver. It punctured and collapsed my lung filing with blood, fractured my spine, shaved off part of my aorta, causing a pseudoaneurysm," said McKanry.McKanry said he was sure he would die."I leaned over, coughed into my hand, I spit up blood, and I was like well this is bad, I was like I'm pretty much going to die here," he said.His Christian faith brought him comfort."I was at peace, and it's going to be weird when I say this, but I was even happy, obviously, not happy that I got shot, but I pretty much knew where I was going. I knew that I was going to die and I knew that I was going to be soon reunited with the person that created me, so I was just peaceful. I was looking up at the stars and,I was happy, I was ready to go," said McKanry.Today the nineteen-year-old is excited about selling real estate. He's also studying business through Santa Barbara City College.Police arrested 3 teenagers. A judge recently sentenced the seventeen-year-old boy who set up the robbery to three years in juvenile detention. An eighteen-year-old is charged with being the getaway driver, and a second seventeen-year-old is accused of being the shooter. McKanry wants the shooter tried as an adult, but he also has compassion."I hope that he finds God, and I hope that he understands that what he did was absolutely wrong, and I hope that he is able to change his life around," said McKanry.McKanry hopes to use his ordeal to share a message."Always, always, always be thankful for what God lays in your path and never take anything for granted, cause you could go outside one day and it will all be gone," said McKanry. 3055

CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) — Coronado officials say lifeguards received multiple reports of shark sightings this week, prompting warning signs to be posted for visitors.The city said four shark sightings were reported between 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Thursday, and the sharks ranged in size from 6 to 10 feet long. One of the sharks was seen by a lifeguard who was on a personal watercraft.The sharks were reportedly within 40 yards of the South Beach area shoreline.The city has posted signs warning beachgoers who visit the area.Naval Base Coronado also posted on Facebook on Friday that shark activity was reported in the Breakers Beach area, and closed water activities until further notice.Just one month ago, a 12-foot great white shark was seen off Coronado's North Beach area by a lifeguard paddleboarding about 100 yards from shore, prompting a 24-hour warning to beachgoers but no water closures. 910

CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) - A major makeover is underway at the Hotel del Coronado, and now the project is moving into phase two, which includes a new entrance. On Wednesday, hotel guests and the public will be able to use the hotel's new underground parking structure, which features 729 spots. For the next two years, guests will enter the hotel from the north side, as the main entrance is redesigned. The temporary entrance can be accessed from R.H. Dana Pl. The project will cost 0 million, a figure that's double the original estimate."To ensure that the Hotel Del is staying relevant with the times, but also that it's here for another 130 years," said Nick OrRico, the resort manager. OrRico says they've been working diligently to enhance the guest experience while construction is underway. After the popular restaurant Sun Deck closed for construction, the hotel created an alternative eatery on the beach with a food truck. "We are still looking for ways to build unique experiences for guests, so they still want to come over here and experience our beautiful beach," said OrRico. Holiday traditions will continue despite renovations, including Skating by the Sea, which kicks off this Friday.For Thanksgiving, the Hotel Del is expecting close to 3,000 guests for dinner in the Crown Room and Ball Room, plus more in the restaurants.On Christmas Eve, they'll serve 500 guests in the Crown Room. Cleveland police have issued an arrest warrant for 39-year-old William Hanlan, who they believe is behind the death of 24-year-old Nicholas Russell.Russell died last month after he was shot outside Mandy's Lounge, on Cleveland's west side. Police said Russell was playing pool at the sports bar when a man walked up and asked to join. There was an argument and the men stepped outside.Moments later, Russell was shot in the chest. Police said he was shot at point-blank range. He was taken to the hospital but died eight days later.Police believe Hanlan pulled the trigger.He is wanted on aggravated murder charges in Russell's death, a felony of the first degree.According to the arrest warrant, police believe Hanlan planned Russell's death prior to coming to the bar.Hanlan has a lengthy criminal past dating back to the late 1990s, but all of his offenses are either traffic violations or misdemeanor charges.    964
