SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Cold, windy, and rainy conditions have prompted the San Diego Housing Commission to activate inclement weather shelters this New Year’s Eve. The commission activates the Inclement Weather Shelter Program when temperatures drop below 50 degrees, the chance of rain is higher than 40 percent or in the case of sustained high winds. The program is a partnership between the commission, the city of San Diego, Father Joe's and Connections Housing. The commission also funds the program. Father Joe’s Villages tells 10News they can take in an additional 170 people this New Year's Eve, including children.They will convert two dining halls into temporary shelters, filling them with cots. “When you’re out there in the rain and you get wet and then this cold air, you feel a chill in your bones, that’s what those on the streets experience,” said Deacon Jim Vargas, President and CEO of Father Joe’s Villages. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 43-year-old man was hospitalized Wednesday morning with serious injuries after the car he was riding in crashed into four parked cars on a Mountain View street, police said.It happened shortly before 10:30 p.m. Tuesday on South 40th Street just south of Imperial Avenue, San Diego Police Officer Robert Heims said.A 38-year-old man was driving a 2005 Honda Civic southbound on South 40th Street when the car drifted to the right for unknown reasons and struck four parked cars, Heims said.The 43-year-old man, who was sitting in the front passenger seat of the Honda, was taken to a hospital for treatment of a fractured neck, which was not believed to be life-threatening, the officer said.The Honda driver was uninjured and 31-year-old man in the back seat of the sedan had a complaint of pain to his leg, Heims said. 847

SAN DIEGO - A crash into a fire hydrant sent a geyser of water 50 feet in the air and flooded homes in Chollas Creek Sunday afternoon, witnesses said.The accident happened around 2 p.m. when witnesses said a U-Haul backed into a fire hydrant near the 5000 block of University Avenue. The hydrant broke, sending water shooting into the air.A home, several cars and some apartments nearby were flooded. The water was shut off about 45 minutes after it started, witnesses said.There is no damage estimate at this time. 523

(AP) — A jury is deliberating in the trial of a Southern California man charged with killing a family of four and burying their bodies in the desert.Jurors on Thursday got the case brought by San Bernardino County prosecutors against 62-year-old Charles "Chase" Merritt.Merritt's business associate Joseph McStay, McStay's wife Summer and the couple's 3- and 4-year-old sons vanished from their San Diego County home in 2010. Three years later, their bodies were found in shallow desert graves more than 100 miles away.Merritt was arrested in 2014. Authorities said they traced his cellphone to the gravesite area and to a call seeking to close McStay's online bookkeeping account.The trial began in January.
