More than four and a half million children live in a home with an unlocked, loaded gun. Three out of 4 of those kids know where the firearms are kept in their house.The “End Family Fire” campaign released this week highlights the importance of safe gun storage in a home in order to keep children safe.Every day, 8 children and teens--ages 19 and under--are unintentionally shot by weapons that are found in the home.Hector Adames' nephew, Joshua, was one of them.“Joshua was shot in the stomach; [it] went through his stomach,” says Adames. “And unfortunately, when Joshua went down, he never got back up.”Kyleanne Hunter, with the Brady Center to Combat Gun Violence says it’s a tragedy that could be prevented by properly storing weapons.The nonprofit organization is the group behind the “End Family Fire” campaign. Hunter says they don’t want to confiscate guns, but instead encourage parents to keep guns locked up, keep ammo separate and let family and visitors know there are firearms in the home and locked away.It's advice Adames hopes parents will take.“We just want to try to prevent any family from having the same kind of pain that this has put my family through. 1185

Multiple secretaries of state in battleground states are reporting robocalls to their residents telling them to stay home Tuesday. They are worried the calls are misleading and spreading misinformation on Election Day, and the FBI and other law enforcement agencies are looking into where the calls are originating from.The anonymous robocalls, which appear to come from a local number, tell voters, “Now is the time to stay home. Stay safe and stay home.”Michigan’s Secretary of State, Jocelyn Benson, tweeted Tuesday morning about the robocalls.“We received reports that an unknown party is purposefully spreading misinformation via robocalls in Flint in an attempt to confuse voters there. I want to ensure everyone who plans to vote in person understands you *must be in line to do so by 8 p.m. today.*” 815

MOHEGAN LAKE, N.Y. — Angelina Friedman, a 102-year-old nursing home resident, recently survived her second bout with COVID-19, according to her daughter Joanne Merola."Not only has she beaten COVID at 101, she's beaten it at 102," Merola said.Friedman also has the unique distinction of living through two global pandemics.During the 1918 pandemic, Angelina Sciales was born on a passenger ship taking immigrants from Italy to New York City."She was born on a ship coming from Italy during the Spanish flu," Merola said earlier this year. "Her birthday was Oct. 18, 1918."Angelina's mother died giving birth on the ship."She was helped by her two sisters," Merola said of her mother.When Angelina's father reunited with his daughters in New York, he took them to live in Brooklyn."She was one of 11 children," Merola said. "She's the last one surviving."Angelina eventually married a man named Harold Friedman. The couple battled cancer later in life, but only Angelina overcame the disease.She's lost most of her hearing and her vision is bad, but she's retained her zest for life.Friedman, a resident of the North Westchester Restorative Therapy and Nursing Center, battled COVID-19 most recently in October, according to her daughter.Her first bout with the virus happened in March when she was taken to the hospital for a minor medical procedure.When she initially tested positive for COVID-19, the procedure was postponed and Friedman spent a week in the hospital. She then returned to the nursing home and was isolated in her room.After running a fever on and off for several weeks, Friedman finally tested negative for coronavirus on April 20.At the time, Friedman's daughter received a late-night phone call from nurses. They said Friedman was doing great, that she was eating again and looking for yarn for crocheting."My mother is a survivor," Merola said in April. "She survived miscarriages, internal bleeding and cancer."Six months after that first COVID-19 diagnosis, Friedman's daughter said she received a call from the nursing home in late October, "to tell me she tested positive again.""She had symptoms — fever, a dry cough," Merola said. "...they gave her a bunch of meds. They thought she might also have the flu."More staff and residents at the nursing home were getting sick, according to Merola, so the older residents were put in isolation.Merola said she got daily updates on the situation, and on Nov. 17 she received great news."My invincible mother tested negative," she said.After another test came back negative, Friedman was moved out of isolation and back into her regular room.Merola said she attributes her mother's survival to "an iron will to live.""She's not the oldest to survive COVID, but she may be the oldest to survive it twice," she said.This story was originally published by Mary Murphy on WPIX in New York City. 2868

High School teen Jayson Goetz was the talk of his high school's prom after he showed up in green and gold Green Bay Packers suit covered with Packers logos and topped off with bright yellow pants and a Packers bow tie. Goetz, a Mosinee High School junior, said he and his friends didn't want to put on the typical, stuffy black tuxedo and blend into the background of prom. And he was glad he made the decision.“It was one of the greatest nights of my life,” Jayson told the Wausau Daily Herald. “I wish I could relive it a hundred times.”Goetz and his mom assembled the ensemble on Amazon.com and said the prom attire is a tribute to his late grandfathers—Mike Goetz and Phil Riedel, both of Mosinee—who died in 2017. “I wish they both would have seen (the suit),” Jayson told the Wausau Daily Herald. “I think they both would have laughed. They would have loved it.”Goetz's mom was skeptical about the outfit at first, but once she heard the reason he wanted to wear it, she happily approved. “I had no idea what he was doing when he first told me about it,” she told the Wausau Daily Herald. “I probably tried to talk him out of it at first. More than a year after he died in police custody with cameras from the reality show "Live PD" on the scene, body camera footage and police records show that a Texas man told police multiple times that he couldn't breathe and was suffering from a heart condition as police took him into custody.According to KVUE-TV in Austin, Texas and the Austin American-Statesman, 40-year-old Javier Ambler died in police custody on March 28, 2019. Ambler had led police and Live PD camera operators on a 22-minute car chase that began when he allegedly failed to dim his headlights to oncoming traffic.Body camera footage from Ambler's arrest shows that police used stun guns three times while taking him into custody, even after he told police he was suffering from congestive heart failure.According to KVUE, an autopsy listed Ambler's death a homicide, which was later determined to be a "justifiable homicide." Medical examiners said Ambler's heart condition and his weight "in combination with forcible restraint" led to his death. Examiners also said Ambler was under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time of his death.KVUE reports that the most serious charge Ambler would have faced was evading arrest, a low-level felony.The District Attorney's Office in Travis County told KVUE that they have been investigating Ambler's death but says they've been hindered by a lack of cooperation from the Williamson County Sheriff's Office. Officials also say that Live PD has failed to share their footage from the arrest with investigators.Travis County District Attorney Margaret Moore told KVUE that she feels that Live PD's participation with the Williamson County Sheriff's Office led to Ambler's death.“It is of very serious concern to any of us who are in law enforcement that the decision to engage in that chase was driven by more of a need to provide entertainment than to keep Williamson County citizens safe,” she said.Moore told KVUE that she plans to take the case before a Grand Jury later this year. 2017
