Can someone in this election truly be undecided in this election? Sure they can. With less than 70 days to go until the election, undecided voters are poised to play a deciding role in whether President Donald Trump or Joe Biden is the president of the United States come the end of January. GEOGRAPHY MATTERSWhile undecided voters matter everywhere, they really matter in crucial counties in swing states. Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, is one example. In 2008 and 2012, this county, which encompasses towns like Wilkes-Barre, voted for President Barack Obama. In 2016, the county voted for Trump. Luzerne is one of three counties in Pennsylvania to have flipped like that. Political scientists refer to counties like these as "pivot counties." WHAT UNDECIDED VOTERS ARE SAYINGRobert Rinaldi is a school bus driver in the county. His lunch buddy, Gene, at D's Diner likes Trump but Rinaldi isn't sure. "I guess I’m hearing a lot of these negative stories and it’s confusing me," Rinaldi said. "Like for instance, this last one with his sister, a retired judge, she’s blasting the guy," Rinaldi said. Meanwhile, Rinaldi is unsure about Joe Biden. He is growing agitated Democrats repeatedly say he is from nearby Scranton. "It's starting to get old, I understand he used to live here but he's been gone for so long," Rinaldi said. Other customers are undecided for other reasons"I don’t think I’ll ever vote unless something drastic happens," Aubree Patronick, a mom said while eating a club sandwich. Patronick doesn't think she'll cast a vote in this year's election. She is tired of the noise and angry Facebook posts."I don’t need a thousand people coming at my comments," Patronick said. (KGTV) - A drone company based in Carlsbad has found a way to use their drones to help the fight against COVID-19.Charles Moss, the owner of FD1 Drone, created new software that uses artificial intelligence to track the size of crowds, as well as the distance between people. He hopes it can be used to enforce social distancing in public places."It's a tool," says Moss. "It's the ultimate tool to enhance our current abilities."The software connects a drone's camera with a computer, feeding real-time information about crowd size and social distancing. It can also detect which people are wearing masks, and which people aren't.On the computer screen, green dots show people who are property distanced. Red dots mean they're too close.Moss says it can be used at parks, beaches, schools, shopping centers, concerts or anywhere else people gather.And the software isn't confined to drones. Moss says it can be installed on street light cameras, similar to the technology the City of San Diego uses in their Internet of Things system. Like the IOT system, Moss' software does not use any facial recognition technology."In order to give people a better comfort out in public, they need insight as to their environments," he says. "The human brain can only process so much data, so much information. This will help them make better decisions."Moss says he's been in contact with a few cities and schools to deploy the technology, but concerns over cost and training has kept his software grounded.He's hopeful it will catch on soon, so it can help keep people safe during the Pandemic.But he says it also has practical applications after the Pandemic ends. CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - At the ripe age of 74, scientist Wladek Minor, PhD. is not slowing down anytime soon, especially when it comes to his research to better understand COVID-19.“This is the biggest danger I’ve seen in my lifetime,” said Minor. “This is a real danger, and we shouldn’t underestimate it.”Minor, who is also a professor at UVA’s Department of Molecular Physiology and Biological Physics, recently made a new discovery in the fight against coronavirus.As the lead researcher, Minor and his team of scientists recently discovered a link between a coronavirus treatment and people with diabetes.They found the drug dexamethasone, which is used to lower the risk of death in patients with a severe case of the virus, might be less effective for treating patients with diabetes.“We were trying to explain why the action of dexamethasone is somewhat erratic,” Minor said. “It means it works for some people and [does] not necessarily work for other people.”Minor and his team analyzed data from 373 COVID-19 patients at a hospital from Wuhan, China.Their research determined how a type of protein in our blood, called serum albumin, picks up dexamethasone and carries it through the body.The scientists found that patients who died had lower levels of that protein than those who survived.Those who died also had higher levels of blood sugar, suggesting diabetes may make it difficult for patients to get the benefits of the drug.“We are trying to make as much impact on human life as possible,” said Minor.Dexamethasone has been shown to cut deaths by about 30% for COVID-19 patients who were on ventilators.The steroid was used to help treat President Donald Trump’s bout with the virus, along with other treatments and drugs including remdesivir, which was just approved by the FDA to use on all hospitalized patients.“COVID is now our enemy, and really, it’s the biggest enemy,” Minor said.Scientists said more research is needed to determine the best treatment for COVID-19 patients, especially for those who have diabetes.For more information on Minor’s research, click here.This story was first reported by Antoinette DelBel at WTKR in Norfolk, Virginia. 2180

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. -- A Polk County, Florida man is pleading for a thief to return a sentimental wedding gift that was stolen out of a family member's truck in Port Charlotte.Boomer Bass left for a fishing trip on Little Gasparilla Island last week, and thought it was best to leave his Springfield 1911 Range Officer Gun with a family member, rather than bring it with him.On April 19th, Bass's mother reported that the gun was stolen out of his truck in the Water's Edge neighborhood in Englewood. The gun holds sentimental value to Bass. "I had a gun very similar to this one when I was younger," he said. "I sold it to help a friend of mine out, and I really regretted selling that gun." With this in mind, his wife, Stefanie, made the decision to buy him that same gun on the morning of their wedding. They married in October of last year. "She went and bought that gun for me and gave it to me that night at our wedding reception, actually," Bass said. "I think the gun signified, really, that she understood the generosity I showed when I was younger, and she wanted to show me she would be the kind of wife that would do those things for me."Stealing a gun is a felony in the state of Florida. However, Bass says if the thief wants to return his gun, he would accept it with no questions asked. "Hopefully, you feel like you made a mistake. I will not prosecute, I will not pursue any legal action. All I want is this gun back," he said. Bass said he is willing to pay the retail price for a brand new gun if his is returned safely.
