SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - On Friday, a group of San Diego teenagers got a lesson in what it takes to make it in San Diego. Junior Achievement of San Diego County hosted the Helix High class of seniors at their Finance Park. "These are all seniors getting ready to go into the real world, this is a program getting them real-world ready," said Valerie Hash, Capstone Manager for Junior Achievement. In the four-hour crash course, students become adults for the day, complete with a salary, family, education, and debt. Once they have that information, they use their tablets to plan, budget, and save. "The number one thing I hear is kids are expensive! And I tell them, yes you are! So then they understand all the decisions their family has to make in order to make their life awesome and possible," said Hash. When taking out loans and making other purchases, students see real-world San Diego costs. So we want to make sure students see that. Yes, you're going to make more money, things are going to be more expensive, how do you mitigate that? Because if you want to stay in San Diego, you should understand that," said Hash. Students were assigned various careers like psychologists, teachers, and dental assistants. You can still live in San Diego, have a home, have a car, clothe your family, but you have to make other types of sacrifices," said Hash. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - On Tuesday the North San Diego Business Chamber honored first responders who've gone above and beyond in their duties protecting the community. One of the recipients was San Diego Police Department K9 Officer Jonathan Wiese, honored for his actions during the active shooter incident at the Chabad of Poway synagogue.Wiese was on his way to meet his family for lunch when he heard the shots fired call and immediately responded to the area.Despite having little information and no back-up, Officer Wiese was able to track the suspect down who then surrendered. "Active shooter is right up there with 'officer down'; the calls don't get more intense than that, when you know someone is actively shooting there's going to be multiple victims, there's going to be a large scene, it's going to be chaotic," said Wiese. Officer Wiese says his 20 years of training kicked in."I tried not to think about the danger, just tried to figure out what I needed to do," said Wiese. "Every single day we have great stories like this, and so I want the public to know this is not unusual, this is our normal," said Chief Craig Carter with the Escondido Police Department. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — President Trump's pardon of former Congressman Duncan Hunter came as no shock to the man who successfully prosecuted the case.“While I am appalled as a citizen, I am not surprised given the prior conduct of the president,” said Phil Halpern, who left the Justice Department after the case concluded.Halpern was one of the Assistant U.S. Attorneys who prosecuted Duncan Hunter and his wife Margaret in 2019. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- More rolling power outages are expected across San Diego as an intense heatwave bakes the county.SDG&E warned Monday that more rotating outages are likely across the region for the next few days."We certainly understand it's a pandemic and everyone is at home right now. We're working from home and schooling from home, and we totally get that, but everything we can possibly do to conserve any ounce of energy is going to help the collective right now," said Denice Menard communications manager for SDG&E.The California Independent System Operator runs the majority of the state's grid. The non-profit says the outages are necessary due to increased demand from the scorching temperatures, but some industry experts disagree."Asleep at the wheel might be a thought that comes to mind," said Bill Powers, Principal of Powers Engineering. Powers has worked on electrical systems for decades, and he's also testified as an expert on energy matters.Powers said there was nothing unusual about the heat."Those of us that watch this on a daily basis knew that Friday was a hot day, but it wasn't an atypical hot day. There was nothing special about Friday's temperature or electrical demand in terms of what we are capable of handling," said Powers.The last time California had rolling blackouts was in 2001. Powers believes the outages have more to do with how the power is managed rather than how much is available."That's due to their whole format where they determine who has the cheapest power in this moment, and then we will let that operate.If you have some units that take awhile to come up to speed that are higher cost, the system doesn't really work that well for that," said Powers.California's governor also called the outages unacceptable and promised a swift investigation."If they start operating the grid with a little bit of practical wisdom, they're not going to be any more blackouts. If you're a Comic-Con mega fan, patience is a vital part of the experience. Many slept on the grassy courtyard for hours, just to claim a seat inside the coveted Hall H. Fans say they can't get enough. "I've been a fan since the first season came out," Superfan, Marvin Calderon said. "I'm also a fan of the comic books."Calderon showed us his right arm. It is entirely covered with "The Walking Dead" themed tattoos, proving to us, his extreme loyalty to the show.Friday's panel featured the showrunner, Angela Kang, her executive producers, Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, Dave Alpert, and Greg Nicotero, as well as cast members Norman Reedus, Danai Gurira, Melissa McBride, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Avi Nash, Cooper Andrews, Ryan Hurst, Nadia Hilker, Eleanor Matsuura, and Cailey Fleming. This was 12-year-old Cailey Fleming's first Comic-Con experience, and she stole the show.
