KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Police arrested two 25-year-old men after a statue of President Andrew Jackson was vandalized Thursday afternoon outside the Jackson County Courthouse in downtown Kansas City, Missouri.A protest group gathered outside the courthouse earlier in the afternoon before the statue was spray-painted with obscenities as well as the phrase "slave owner."Kansas City Police Department (KCPD) officers were called to the courthouse shortly after 5:30 p.m. Thursday to investigate ongoing vandalism at the statue and observed two suspects spray painting the monument."Officers were able to identify the two individuals responsible from a distance," a KCPD spokesman said in a statement. "Once the crowd began to disperse and they were a safe distance away, the two suspects were taken into custody in front of Police HQ."Police also called a KC Parks and Recreation crew to deal with the graffiti. The workers covered the statue with a tarp shortly before 9 p.m.Unless officials can remove the graffiti, the statue will remain covered until the county legislature decide what to do with it. Davis Park near East 10th Street and Locust Avenue."Both suspects are being detained tonight for further investigation and determination of applicable charges," a KCPD spokesman said.Jackson — the seventh president of the U.S., who served from 1829 to 1837 — is among 12 former presidents who owned slaves before slavery was outlawed following the Civil War. Jackson became quite wealthy as a slave-owning plantation owner. His grave was defaced in 2018.Jackson County Executive Frank White Jr. released a statement shortly after the vandalism, which called for the statue's removal."Countless men, women and children come through the doors of our courthouses every day," White's statement read, in part. "And every day, racism and discrimination are staring them in the face. Statues of Andrew Jackson — our country's seventh president and county's namesake — stand outside two of our courthouses, public buildings where we want and need people to feel welcome. Yet, they are greeted by a man who owned hundreds of slaves, opposed the abolitionist movement and caused thousands of Native Americans to die when he forced them out of their homeland for white settlement. As long as these statues remain, our words about fairness, justice and equality will continue to ring hollow for many we serve."According to a release from White's office, he planned to "address the issue and recommend removal of the statues to the County Legislature" during the next meeting Monday morning.The Jackson County Prosecutor's Office agreed to pay for plaques on both statues that detail Jackson's historical role in disenfranchising non-white people after the county legislature voted to add the plaques in December 2019. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the plaques have not yet been added to the statues.White acknowledged that his stance on removing the statues might not be popular, but he believes it is necessary given the outpouring of cries for justice since a Minneapolis police officer drove a knee on George Floyd's neck as he laid facedown on the pavement until he died one month ago."In the month since George Floyd was tragically murdered, I have been inspired by the diversity of faces, voices, and ideas that have come forward and demanded we do better," White said. "What once could be described as a small minority pleading for change, has grown into a broad and diverse chorus of voices no longer pleading, but now demanding equality and making clear they will settle for nothing less. I am hopeful that we are seeing a true shift in the minds and hearts of people regardless of their age, race, gender or political affiliation. As we move forward, we must acknowledge the role that racism plays in our community and our responsibility to take action, which may sometimes be unpopular, to ensure everyone feels safe, feels welcome, and ultimately, is treated equally in Jackson County."White said he would ask the Jackson County Legislature to form a special committee Monday and begin public hearings to discuss removing the statues.He said Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker, whose office agreed to pay for the plaques seven months ago, reached out recently to discuss removing the statues."I welcome the opportunity to work with the Legislature and fellow elected officials to find a better home for these statues where their history can be put into the appropriate context for us to learn from, but I am convinced that home is not in front of our courthouses," White said.He concluded his statement by writing, "Let me be clear — we can never erase history. Kevin Spacey made the set of Netflix's "House of Cards" into a "toxic" work environment through a pattern of sexual harassment, eight people who currently work on the show or worked on it in the past tell CNN. One former employee told CNN that Spacey sexually assaulted him.The former production assistant, whose account has never previously been disclosed, told CNN that Spacey sexually assaulted him during one of the show's early seasons. All eight people, each of whom spoke to CNN on the condition of anonymity for fear of professional repercussions for speaking out, described Spacey's behavior as "predatory," saying it included nonconsensual touching and crude comments and targeted production staffers who were typically young and male.The new accusations follow an explosive article published less than a week ago by BuzzFeed News, in which actor Anthony Rapp said Spacey made sexual advances toward him in 1985, when Rapp was 14 years old.On Monday,?Spacey released an apology in response to Rapp's account. "I honestly do not remember the encounter, it would have been over 30 years ago," Spacey said. While the two men were in the trailer, the production assistant says, Spacey cornered him, blocked his exit and made inappropriate contact with him."I told him, 'I don't think I'm ok with this, I don't think I'm comfortable with this,'" the production assistant said. That's when the actor became "visibly flustered," fled the trailer, got in his car and left for the remainder of the day, according to the production assistant.The production assistant did not report the incident to any managers of the series or the police, but he did tell a coworker at the time. CNN has spoken to the coworker to corroborate the production assistant's story.The alleged sexual assault came months after the production assistant had, he told CNN, complained to a supervisor that Spacey was sexually harassing him. The supervisor's solution was to never let the production assistant be alone with Spacey while they were on set, the production assistant says.The assistant said the harassment then stopped for long enough for him to feel comfortable driving with Spacey to the set."I have no doubt that this type of predatory behavior was routine for him and that my experience was one of many and that Kevin had few if any qualms about exploiting his status and position," he said. "It was a toxic environment for young men who had to interact with him at all in the crew, cast, background actors."The other people who worked on "House of Cards" with whom CNN spoke all supported the idea that the set could be toxic for young men because of Spacey.A crew member who worked on the show for all six seasons said that Spacey routinely harassed and touched him."He would put his hands on me in weird ways," the crew member said. "He would come in and massage my shoulders from behind or put his hands around me or touch my stomach sometimes in weird ways that in normal everyday conversation would not be appropriate."This crew member said he did not "feel comfortable" telling Spacey to stop. "That's the worst part about this whole thing. I would love to be able to speak out about this kind of stuff and not fear."CNN spoke to a close friend of the crew member, who says that the crew member had told him about Spacey's behavior over the course of the six seasons of the show that it happened.When asked on Thursday about the new allegations, Netflix said in a statement to CNN that they sent a representative to the "House of Cards" set on Monday."Netflix was just made aware of one incident, five years ago, that we were informed was resolved swiftly," the statement said. "On Tuesday, in collaboration with MRC, we suspended production, knowing that Kevin Spacey wasn't scheduled to work until Wednesday. Netflix is not aware of any other incidents involving Kevin Spacey on-set. We continue to collaborate with MRC and other production partners to maintain a safe and respectful working environment. We will continue to work with MRC during this hiatus time to evaluate our path forward as it relates to the production, and have nothing further to share at this time."MRC, the production company behind "House of Cards," told CNN in a separate statement on Thursday that they have implemented "an anonymous complaint hotline, crisis counselors, and sexual harassment legal advisors for the crew.""We are deeply troubled to learn about these new allegations that are being made to the press concerning Kevin Spacey's interaction with members of the crew of House of Cards," the MRC statement said. "As the producer of the show, creating and maintaining a safe working environment for our cast and crew has always been our top priority. We have consistently reinforced the importance of employees reporting any incident without fear of retaliation and we have investigated and taken appropriate actions following any complaints. For example, during our first year of production in 2012, someone on the crew shared a complaint about a specific remark and gesture made by Kevin Spacey. Immediate action was taken following our review of the situation and we are confident the issue was resolved promptly to the satisfaction of all involved. The wife succumbed to effects from the coronavirus.To Garrett Yamada, Elizabeth and Joseph were just mom and dad. "My dad loved fish 'n chips and spam, and my mom was into sushi and fine dining," Yamada laughed. But on May 11, Joseph Yamada died after a long battle with dementia. Nine days later, COVID-19 took Elizabeth. They were both 90 years old. "I miss them, but I'm proud of the life they lived," Yamada said. Through struggle and strife, the Yamadas became a prominent San Diego couple. Joseph was a world-renowned landscape architect whose projects included designs for Sea World, UC San Diego, and the Chula Vista Olympic Training Center. Elizabeth was an English teacher who later became a partner at her husband's firm. "They were a wonderful team together," Yamada said.But their love story began behind bars at Poston Japanese Internment Camp in Arizona. Last May, Elizabeth Kikuchi-Yamada shared her story with 10News about her move to the camp as a 12-year-old girl. During her time there, she wrote letters to respected San Diego city librarian, Clara Breed.Breed fought racial injustice by sending books, trinkets, and hope to children locked up in camp. "Clara cared about helping young people know that there was freedom beyond imprisonment. Freedom of the mind to grow. Freedom of the heart to deepen," Elizabeth Yamada said in 2019. It was a story she shared for decades until the virus suddenly took over. "The tragedy with COVID is it separates you physically," her son said. "But her mind was sharp until the very end."The Yamada's were born two days apart in 1930 and died nine days apart in 2020. They were a loving couple, inseparable, both in life and death. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — One of the men indicted for the death of 10-year-old boy on a water slide in 2016 is also facing a bankruptcy in Texas.Jeff Henry, the co-owner of Schlitterbahn water parks in Kansas City, Kansas and Corpus Christi, Texas is scheduled to appear in a Kansas City, Kansas, courtroom next week.The Corpus Christi location is part of an ongoing bankruptcy.According to court records, Jeff Henry and his brother Gary Henry were behind a company called Upper Padre Partners (UPP).Those same records show UPP had more than million in unexplained cost overruns for the Corpus Christi water park.That figure is more than double what it was expected to cost to build the complex, which also includes a nine-hole golf course.Companies the Henrys borrowed money from accuse them of mismanagement and misappropriation of funds.Right now, a court-appointed trustee runs Upper Padre Partners, and submits monthly financial reports to the court.The newest report, for February, was submitted last week.Court records show a company called Axys loaned UPP million in February 2015.By November 2016, three months after 10-year-old Caleb Schwab was killed while riding a slide in the Kansas City park, that million was in default.Axys foreclosed on a piece of property next to the Corpus Christi water park and is attempting to sell it to get some of its money back.An attorney for Axys said UPP still owes the company millions of dollars.Court records show UPP also owes International Bank of Commerce more than million.That bank has put claims known as liens on both the water park and the golf course. 1662
