SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The US Census is looking to hire thousands of people in San Diego, and hoping that /hour and flexible schedules are enough to entice people to apply."It takes a community to count a community," says Census Outreach Specialist David Bennett. "We're trying to count everybody once, only once, in the right place. We need help."Right now, the Census is putting on a hiring blitz around the country, with half-a-million jobs to fill. They're canvassing college campuses and other public places where people may be looking for a part-time job."It's for people, especially in this gig-economy, who are looking to get some extra money and be a part of history," says Bennett.Jobs range from counters who will go door to door to management. They can last anywhere from 6 weeks to two years. Pay starts at .50/hour."It's so important," says Bennett. "Our founders wanted to make sure our government looked like our citizens. That's why we do the Census."To be eligible, you must be a US Citizen, 18 years or older, and available to work a minimum of 20 hours per week. Bennett says there are some exceptions if you're not a citizen but speak a foreign language that can help with the count.Applications take about 10 minutes to complete and can be done online or over the phone. 1303

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The unofficial start of summer is here in San Diego and that means it’s time to hit the beaches and enjoy some sunshine.Health officials are reminding residents that it’s also time to check the water quality before heading out.The County of San Diego’s Department of Environmental Health checks the water on a regular basis and posts that information online.Due to the need to warn residents if water quality is poor, the county developed the “Check Before You Get In” website.The site allows people to check water conditions at more than 80 local beaches. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Three Scripps Health clinics will be reopening after being closed in March when stay-at-home orders began due to the coronavirus pandemic.Scripps says it has also resumed time-critical surgeries at its five hospital locations and outpatient surgery centers in the county.Scripps Coastal Medical Center Escondido, Scripps Coastal Medical Center Solana Beach, and Scripps Clinic Santee are reopening for the same medical services that were available at the sites prior to closing, expect for radiology.During the closures, patients were referred to other Scripps Health sites that were still open.As the medical centers reopen, Scripps Health says it is taking all necessary precautions, including all staff and patients wearing masks, screening patients before they enter, isolating patients with COVID-19 symptoms, and using strict cleaning protocols."We are very thoughtfully and cautiously phasing in a return of services to make sure that we have what we need to protect our patients and staff – from personal protective equipment to disinfecting supplies – to ensure the safety of everyone in our facilities," said Ghazala Sharieff, Scripps chief medical officer of clinical excellence and experience. 1233

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The San Diego Unified School District said Wednesday that they are coordinating and organizing with student leaders for March 14th, when students from across the country are planning for a walkout.The walkout is in response to the Florida shooting.  The student-led demonstration is meant to urge lawmakers to pass stronger gun control laws.“We support student's voice,” School Board President Kevin Beiser said in news conference Wednesday. The protests are planned at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 14th.  The district wants students to help plan events at all participating schools, which are mostly high schools, according to Andrew Sharp, a district spokesman.It will be up to those school communities to come up with a plan.  Sharp says, in general, the district would rather the students keep activities on campus in so-called “teach-ins” as opposed to “walk-outs but the superintendent has said, “students will not be disciplined for participation in planned peaceful demonstrations occurring at schools.” District heads will be meeting with student leaders from “Equity Coalition” on Wednesday, March 7 to hear their ideas on the protest.
