SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Ross Rock, or as locals prefer "The Rock," has had its share of headgear.The lone rock just off the coast from Sunset Cliffs Boulevard has been the target of vandals in the past and has again been crowned, this time by a mermaid.It's not clear how the mermaid was installed on top of the rock. Placing objects on the Ross Rock has almost become a ritual.In 2006, a large pterodactyl had sat atop the rock before being washed away. A peace sign, the numbers "2010" — local graduates, perhaps? — a Christmas tree, a tiki head, and at one point, a toilet with a Raiders fan wedged inside have all been found taking refuge from the waves below.It remains unclear who makes the objects or how they have installed them in the past.Time and again, however, Mother Nature or possibly another vandal has removed what's been placed. 1359

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego frontline workers are getting their first dose of the Pfizer vaccine and hope with the approval of Moderna's vaccine we will achieve herd immunity soon and get back to normal.Tri-City Medical Center Emergency Room Dr. Jeff Shellenberger said he was grateful he was notified he could get his shot Sunday."It was really quick, I think I waited like two minutes," he said.Timing is critical for the Pfizer vaccine, which needs to be stored between -112°F to -76°, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Once thawed, undiluted vials may be stored at room temperature for no more than 2 hours, according to the Food and Drug Administration.Dr. Shellenberger said he felt a huge sense of relief wash over him after getting the shot."There's going to be a force field around me in a few weeks to months it's going to be amazing!" he joked. "It's really great because when I go to work I don't have to worry about any of my coworkers getting sick. Just the other day I had a patient of mine and he was a coworker and so it's always kind of scary to see that, but it's great to get to see friends and family again and not have to worry."He said it takes about 5 weeks and two shots to reach full immunity.The CDC's advisory committee voted Sunday 13-1 frontline essential workers and adults ages 75 and older should be the priority in the next round of COVID-19 vaccine distribution.Frontline essential workers include first responders, educators, food, agriculture, manufacturing, postal service, grocery and corrections workers.About 30,000,000 Americans fall into that category.They suggested the next phase, 1C, prioritizes adults ages 65 - 75, people with pre-existing conditions, and other essential workers.Initial vaccine doses already are going to residents in long-term care facilities and health care workers."Nice to report our Western States Scientific Safety Review Committee reviewed the Moderna trial and unanimously supported it's safety and efficacy," Governor Gavin Newsom said in a video he tweeted Sunday, excited to have two vaccines in their arsenal to fight the pandemic.Dr. Shellenberger just hopes everyone comes together in 2021."I think in this past year we've had a whole lot of division. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police officers who fired shots at a man in Rolando last year were justified in their use of deadly force, the San Diego District Attorney’s office announced Monday. Body camera video recorded by San Diego Police shows the officers engaged in gunfire with Joe Darwish on June 23, 2018. Police responded to a disturbance call at the condo on Rolando Court. When they smelled smoke, they called firefighters to the scene, the DA’s office said in a news release. RELATED: Suspect who shot, wounded 2 officers in College Area identified Officers knocked on the front door for more than 20 minutes but received no response, officials said. Firefighters forced entry into the home but were met with gunfire. Darwish shot one officer in the back with a large caliber weapon, according to the DA’s office. Two officers returned fire as they provided cover for the wounded officer, who couldn’t move for several seconds. The wounded officer eventually managed to roll onto his stomach and crawl away from the line of fire. Darwish also shot a second officer during the exchange of gunfire. RELATED: Neighbor describes Rolando gunman as volatile, dangerous The DA’s office said the shooting eventually stopped and officers found Darwish dead from a self-inflicted gunshot. Darwish had also been hit in the face and arm from one of the officers’ shotguns. “This harrowing incident shows just how quickly a routine call for service can turn deadly for police officers who suddenly found themselves in the line of fire, trying to protect their wounded fellow officers and keep the shooter from endangering members of the public,” said District Attorney Summer Stephan. “It’s a tribute to these officers’ bravery and quick response that the gunman didn’t injure more people or kill the officers and firefighters involved.” Darwish had been wearing a bulletproof vest. He was armed with two homemade guns: an assault weapon and a 9 mm semi-automatic pistol, according to the DA. Neither gun was registered. Last summer, Team 10 reporter Jennifer Kastner broke the story about how officers wanted to search Darwish’s home for weapons, days before the massive shootout. However, the Office of the San Diego County District Attorney did not attempt to get a search warrant. In the days after the shooting, 10News was tipped off by a law enforcement source that the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force had wanted to search Darwish's home because they thought he had a weapon and was buying parts to make more weapons.Darwish wasn't supposed to own any weapons because of his criminal history. Our source said the FBI asked the District Attorney's Office to sign off on having a judge issue a search warrant, but the DA’s Office did not do so.For 7 weeks, 10News had been trying to confirm this with the DA’s Office. After our 10News attorneys got involved, the DA’s Office sent us a letter reading in part, “On June 13, 2018, the San Diego County District Attorney's Office received a request by law enforcement to review a draft of an affidavit in support of a search warrant to conduct a search of Mr. Darwish's person, property and residence. The District Attorney's Office determined that the warrant was legally deficient and so advised law enforcement.”June 13th was 10 days before the big shooting. 10News asked the DA’s Office why it turned down the FBI’s request to do a search warrant, but the DA’s Office stated it was "exempt from disclosure".This afternoon, we emailed the DA's Office for new comment. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Rep. Duncan Hunter's opponent, Ammar Campa-Najjar, spoke out Tuesday about the indictment against the congressman. “Now is the time to put country over party,” Campa said in a brief video posted on YouTube. Campa continued by adding that Hunter "is in it for himself." In the June Primary, Hunter finished with 49 percent of the vote with Campa gaining 16 percent. Political Consultant Laura Fink told 10News Tuesday night that a more recent generic ballot showed the to candidates "neck-and-neck." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police are investigating what led to the death of a man while in police custody last week in Paradise Hills.Police said 39-year-old Guillermo Corrales was arrested on April 16 in the 6300 block of Clyde Ave. after reports of a relative becoming violent. Corrales had possibly used narcotics, according to police.Corrales was placed in handcuffs and medically evaluated by first responders.During the evaluation, Corrales went into cardiac arrest, according to police, and he was taken to a nearby hospital and placed on life support.He died from his injuries on Thursday.San Diego Police homicide detectives are investigating the incident as a possible custody death. 724
