LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. (KGTV) — A Riverside County man who tested positive for COVID-19 after attending a party warned others considering gatherings the day before he died.Thomas Macias attended a barbecue in June in Lake Elsinore, where he was exposed to another person who later said they knowingly had coronavirus but never told anyone, according to Los Angeles ABC-affiliate KABC.Shortly after the party, Macias started feeling sick and posted a warning to others on Facebook, his family told CNN."I went out a couple of weeks ago ... because of my stupidity I put my mom and sisters and my family's health in jeopardy," Macias wrote. "This has been a very painful experience. This is no joke. If you have to go out, wear a mask, and practice social distancing. ... Hopefully with God's help, I'll be able to survive this."Macias died the day after posting the warning. The 51-year-old suffered from diabetes, one of the underlying conditions health experts warn make some individuals especially vulnerable to COVID-19.A friend who was also at the party notified Macias that he had coronavirus and he was aware of the positive diagnosis when he attended the gathering. The friend thought he couldn't infect anyone because he had no symptoms, a family member told CNN.It wasn't clear if anyone was social distancing or wearing facial coverings at the party. About a dozen people who were at the party also tested positive, CNN reported.Macias was tested for COVID-19 on June 15, was told he tested positive on June 18, and died on June 21, KABC reports. 1563

(KGTV) - Supporters of a sales tax increase in Lemon Grove plan to gather signatures for the final time this weekend in hopes of qualifying a ballot measure that they say is needed to save the city from disincorporation.Facing gloomy revenue projections in a city with the lowest sales tax rate in the county, supporters want to put a three-quarter cent increase before voters on the March ballot.Without the hike, the city might be forced to dissolve into the county, which would take possession of city assets and likely sell City Hall, said councilman Jerry Jones."We've done all the cuts that we can do," he said. "We're in worse shape than we were 10 years ago."The city spends roughly 80 percent of its budget on public safety, leaving little for infrastructure and other programs like addressing homelessness, Jones said.The tax hike would generate 3 million dollars, raising the city's total sales tax revenue by 38 percent, he said.At the Grove Grinder restaurant, business owner Sharon Jones is skeptical of the doomsday scenario."I think it's just a scare tactic," she said.She thinks the city should help its business community grow, and says raising the sales tax might do just the opposite."There are more businesses closing down here in lemon grove. If they think they're getting the sales tax that comes from businesses, they're not going to get as much as they think they're going to get," she said.Councilman Jones was once opposed to a tax increase too, but now he say it's necessary."There are just no other alternatives if we want to stay a city," he said.Supporters have until September 30 to gather 1,489 signatures to qualify for the March 2020 ballot."We think we can" get enough signatures by the deadline, said Yadira Altamirano, one of the proponents of the Lemon Grove Tax Measure. LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) - Two women on vacation in San Diego had their trip ruined when thieves stole all of their luggage.Vivia Bradshaw and Yvonne Simpson live in Florida and New York. For the last 15 years, they've made regular trips to San Diego."We’re always coming back, it is so beautiful, we love the weather especially," says Simpson. "Everything's so beautiful. We've never had a terrible experience coming here before."But their trip this past week turn a turn for the worse on Saturday, while they were visiting with a friend in La Mesa.Simpson and Bradshaw say they had put their luggage in their friend's car at the Woodland Terrace Apartments while they visited his home."When we were ready to leave, I came back to the car and saw something a little strange," says Simpson. "I asked him, was that open? And he saw right away that someone had entered the car. I said check the trunk. He did, all our suitcases were gone. Every last piece. Three of them!"Thieves took all of their clothes, money, gift cards, jewelry, shoes, purses and personal items."Everything's gone," says Simpson. "We know they're replaceable, but it's the sentiment."The two women have been able to buy new clothes and necessities. Now they're trying to make the most out of their week-long trip. They've filed a police report as well. La Mesa Police says they hope surveillance footage can help identify a suspect.Meanwhile, Bradshaw and Simpson have a warning for others."Just be careful," says Bradshaw. LAS VEGAS - Former Vice President Joe Biden maintains a slight lead in Nevada, with just about 12,000 votes more than President Donald Trump. However, more than 50,000 mail-in ballots remain to be counted in Clark County alone.Election officials in Clark County, where Las Vegas is located, hope to have the bulk of mail-in ballots counted and tabulated by Sunday. They said they hope to release updated totals each morning around 12 p.m. ET.According to the state’s website, former President Joe Biden currently has 604,251 of the vote or 49.43% votes total.President Trump has 592,813 of the vote or 48.50% votes total.That is a difference of 11,438.These are not the final results.In Clark County, the registrar of voters, Joe Gloria, said as of Thursday morning, they had more than roughly 50,000 mail-in ballots to count Thursday. There are also about 60,000 provisional ballots that his county needs to verify and count. All in-person votes were tabulated and reported already."That is a number I cannot tell you (how many ballots are left to count). I do not know how many ballots will come through the mail," Gloria said. "I can't count the mail ballots until they are all delivered," and they can be delivered up until Tuesday.In Nevada, all mail-in ballots postmarked by Election Day are valid and can be counted up until one week after Election Day.Meanwhile, just moments before the updated vote totals were announced, Trump's campaign announced they will file a lawsuit in Nevada, alleging various forms of potential voter fraud. This is the fourth lawsuit the campaign has filed in the last 24 hours; Wednesday the Trump campaign filed in Georgia, Michigan and Pennsylvania.Former Nevada Attorney General Adam Laxalt said observers have not been able to observe signature comparisons and ballot counting.The Trump campaign says there is also proof that non-residents voted, and those votes are being counted. In Nevada, residents need to live in the state for at least 30 days before casting a ballot.The Trump campaign's legal action includes the first-hand account from a woman, Jill Stokke, who says she went to her polling place on Tuesday and was told she had already cast her ballot. She says she always votes in person, and asked election officials about it. She claims someone stole her mail-in ballot, and that of her roommate.Stokke has trouble seeing, and told local media she cannot read the print on the ballot without help. When asked about the incident, Clark County's registrar of voters, Joe Gloria, said he is aware of the Stokke's claim, and feels confident in how it was handled. “I personally dealt with (her issue). She brought her claim to me. We reviewed her ballot, and in our opinion, it is her signature. We also gave her an opportunity to provide a statement, if she wanted to object to that and provide a challenge to that. She refused to do so. A member of the Nevada Secretary of State’s Office investigations team also interviewed her, and they had no issue with the assistance we tried to give her,” Gloria said. "Due to all the irregularities," Laxalt said they are asking the state "to stop the counting of improper votes."In response, at a later press conference, a Clark County official said their goal is not to be fast, but to be accurate."We are not aware of any improper ballots being processed," Gloria said. He also said they have done everything they can to accommodate observers and to make their process transparent.These are similar arguments made in Trump campaign lawsuits filed in Michigan and Pennsylvania about observers not being allowed to observe ballot counts. LeBron James already runs the NBA from a player's perspective, but now people want him to run the country's education system as well. An online petition is asking for signatures to get James considered to take over the Secretary of Education position from Betsy DeVos.The petition says they want James to step in as he has shown his desire to help at-risk children after opening his "I Promise" school in Akron, Ohio late last month which will give education to those children who would not otherwise be able to receive it. It also gives all those who graduate from the school free tuition to Akron University. James recently spoke to CNN's Don Lemon to discuss the new school as well as President Trump to elected DeVos to her position. Trump then went on to tweet about the interview, calling into question James' intelligence. The tweet led to a firestorm of responses calling into question Trump's intelligence as well as the Secretary of Education's. Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers responded to the president's tweet by saying he, and many other athletes across different sports, support James and what he has done in the community, not just the NBA. The petition is looking for 12,000 signatures and currently has over 11,750.  1289
